Hello Hashani -

Is there anything we can do to help? Please take a few minutes to share the status of your project. If you have something for us to review, that would be awesome. It is helpful if contestants report back every few days to help keep us in touch with your task progress.

Thanks!
Amy :)

Hi Amy,

Sorry for the late reply. The thing is I had no experience working with Linux
OS and currently I'm using windows for document purposes. So I will download
and install openoffice in windows and until that I will use Microsoft Office word.

Any comments on that?  :-\

I just finished the documenting works for installation of XAMPP_1.6.3a and
Joomla_1.0.13  and I will upload(to google thread)  and welcome to any
comments on that.  Now I have been documenting how the parameters
affect to the frontend appearance of a blog in joomla. But honestly I'm
not sure whether the way I'm doing is correct.

So if can explain it further it will be very convenient for me.  :-\

Thank you,
Hashani

hashani -

If Word is easier for you than Open Office that is not a big concern.

I reviewed your XAMPP and J! Installation documentation. It's very nice. The thing is, that wasn't the assignment for your task.
One line summary
Create a "Joomla! Category Blog Layout" document.

Description
Create a document that explains how to set each of the Parameters (Basic,
Advanced, Component, and System) and how that impacts the Frontend
appearance for site visitors.
Also, we should have been more specific in the version as we are focused on Joomla! v 1.5, the newer release.

What this task is after is creating a new menu item in Joomla! v 1.5 for an Article-Category-Blog.

In the backend Administrator, select Menus-Main Menu.

Click the New button.

On the Select Menu Item Type tree, click Articles, followed by Category-Blog-Layout.

Basic Parameters
In the Menu Item Manager, select a Category from the Category listbox.

Select Description Hide or Show. This determines whether or not the Category description will be shown on the blog.

and, so on.

Parameters Advanced

xxx

Parameters Component

xxx

Parameters System

xxx

Try installing J! v 1.5 - and then look at these comments and see if it starts to make sense.

Also - feel free to ask questions. We will try to guide you on your way.

Thank you very very much for getting back to us. Be encouraged - you'll get it!

Hi Amy,

I have a problem that how the content of the site will be changed
by the advance parameter called 'show feed links'. Even I tried to
change the content by selecting different options for it, I could not
find any different. I would like to know whether I did any mistake
on that. And also I could not found how the content will be
changed by the 'Show info text 'parameter.

I will upload(to google thread) document which I have created until today.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
Hashani

That is *excellent* work!  8)

Page 16 - Advance --> Advanced

Page 18 - joomla --> Joomla! + a option --> an option

Page 20 and 23 - missing Output picture

Page 32 - WOW! How excellent - your brought the CSS styles to life!

++++

hashani -

That is very, very good work! I recommend you add one section at the beginning.

Joomla!'s Category Blog Layout is very popular to use because it is very flexible. There are many parameters that you can set to create the layout desired. It is important to understand that there are three places that parameters can be set - and there is a systematic way that Joomla! uses these parameters.

Article Manager Parameters

In the Joomla! Administrator, select the Content-Article Manager menu option. At the top, right of the page is an icon called Parameters. This is where you can set the default values used by menu items and articles.

Menu Item Parameters

When you create a new menu item that includes an Article menu type, like an Article-Category Blog, you are also presented with Parameter choices. If you wish to use the default values set at the Article Manager level, then no changes are required for the menu item parameters.

Article Parameters

Each article also has it's own set of parameters. When you edit an article, the parameters are available on the right side. If you wish to use the default values set at the Article Manager level, or the values set at the Menu Item level, no changes are required in the Article parameters. Understand Article parameters override the menu item settings.

Then, minor changes, above, and it's excellent!

Thank you very much for your contributions to the Joomla! community. These questions are asked a lot and your document will be used by so many end users - and help them a great deal.

Amy :)

I really want to second Amy's comments. This is going to be a very useful resource for people.

A very brief introduction/road map at the beginning, as Amy suggested, will help people with understanding the conepts.

Hi Amy & Mcsmom,

Thank you very much for your comments and proper guide lines.

I will improve my task as the way you expect. The thing is nowadays we
are in a vacation and I will not be able to come online until 26th of December.
But I will do my best and try to upload my improved document before 27th of
December.

Have a Merry Christmas to you all.  :)

Cheers,
Hashani

Hi Amy,

Happy New Year 2008!  :)

Sorry for the late reply. I have finished most of my tasks as your guide lines.
As your comments I know that there are two pages with missing output
screen shots. But still I could not see any output related to the 'show
unauthorized links' and 'show intro text' which comes under component
parameters. Other than that I have finished every thing.

Any comments?

Cheers,
Hashani
