018 - Introduce at least 3 new end users to the Joomla! Front end and write a...

Post by Ashton_Murphy » Thu Nov 29, 2007 11:12 pm

Heya, everyone! :)
My name is Ashton and am working on task #18 - Introduce at least 3 new end users to the Joomla! Front end and write a report on what happens.

This is the information:
Description

This task involves user interface research. The goal of the task is to
identify areas in where users make errors or are confused. The report from
this research can then be used by developers to improve the user interface
in future versions of Joomla!.

For this task the focus will be on the Joomla! front end interface for
users who are authors.

For this task you will work with three people who have never used Joomla!
before.

Using a Joomla! 1.5 site with one of the default templates and no
modifications have users attempt tasks such as:

  1. Registration
  2. Logging in
  3. Searching for content
  4. Submitting a weblink
  5. Submitting an article.
  6. Editing an article.

You can add additional tasks that you think will be useful.
Skills Needed

  1. Knowledge of Joomla!
  2. Good observational skills

Difficulty

Basic
Work Product

A report describing your research process and what you learned about
strengths and weaknesses of the Joomla! user interface.
Extra Credit (optional)

1. Expand your research to more than three users.

2. Develop specific suggestions to address issues that you identify.
Also, I was just wondering, for the people that I have chosen to work with, what sort of information about them should I put on the document? At the moment, I just have Name, Email Address, Age, and Gender. Is anything else required/wanted? Thanks. :)

Nice meeting you all, and will be a pleasure working with you. :)

It's not a good idea to include names or email addresses of any participant as this may be an invasion of their privacy.  Email addresses are certainly not needed.  If you would like to refer to people by name then how about making up some fake names (eg. Alice, Bob and Carol) so that the real people cannot be identified.

Chris.

Okay, that's fine. :)

I've got the consent of the people when asking them. Those details they did not mind giving, and it doesn't really bother them.

Ashton -

It's been quite awhile since we heard from you. It might take a few reviews before your task is accepted, as complete, and the task is due on this coming Tuesday, Dec 11. Do you have something we can review? If not, is there something we can do to help?

We would appreciate a quick update, if possible.

Thanks!
Amy :)

Sorry about the lateness, I've submitted the work. Something came up in Real Life and I wasn't able to submit it in time. As soon as I was able to submit it, I did. I hope everything is okay. But the work was completed about 5 days before it was submitted.
Once again, sorry.
Thank you for your patience,

-Ashton

I always love Usability Testing. It is so difficult to built a truly intuitive application.

Good that you offered some demographics; it's important to understand your target audience.

Your tests were excellent. There is nothing in that list that should be difficult. End users should be able to register, login, submit a weblink and article, insert a picture into the article, search the site for content, change an article and change their details.

That is a perfect set of tests.

The answers were fascinating and certainly illuminating of areas that one might focus improvements.

I accept this task as complete. We need one more judge to do so. When that happens, you can post your work at Google, then we will close that task. After the Google task is closed, you can take a new task, if you want to do so.

Thank you for your very interesting and helpful work and contributions to the Joomla! community,
Amy :)

TASK ACCEPTED AS COMPLETE - GREAT WORK!

Your work is excellent!  Good job!

Despite granted permission, I still think it is a good idea to alter the information provided about the participants.  Please alter the names, remove the email addresses and I think the age is sufficient - you should not include the year of birth.

Once this has done, we will readily accept your great work and mark the thread as solved.

Ian

Sorry about that. It's done now.
Thanks again!
