054 - Create a Video demonstrating how to install a Joomla! extension.
Hi everyone,
I am Daniel from Arizona and i will be creating a video demonstrating how to install a joomla extension.
I was wondering if there were already some Joomla! tuturial videos made with wink so I can see them and get more of an idea how I should do it.
Thanks,
Daniel

Re: 054 - Create a Video demonstrating how to install a Joomla! extension.
Thanks, I have another question,
Is there a particular extension I should install? If not is ExtExplorer(http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/) fine?
Thanks again,
Daniel

I don't think that is a good example because I it is more complex than simply using the installer because it is essentially a stand alone program.
Just browsing throught the JED for a 1.5 native component that isn't too complicated, what about Xmap?

I just installed Xmap and had a quick question?.. How do i make it so the sitemap is showing on the Joomla homepage? Or is that an unessesary step and am I just supposed to show the installation and stop right there?
Thanks, and sorry for taking your time,
Daniel

Showing a site map on the homepage would require you to show the component in a piece of content, rather than the more traditional way of just creating a menu item for it. There is a mambot that you can use to put components into content. Its on Joomla! extensions somewhere as 'component-bot' or some such.

Create a new menu item, and point it to the X-map extension, this should do it.

I think it would be good to do so. Even though not all extensions will be configured/used in that manner, it does show that there are subsequent steps to installing an extension after the actual install.
Also, as a reminder, your task is due on Dec 12. If you have something you want us to begin reviewing, please feel free to share.
Thanks!

Oh no i don't have the video yet ! I understood it to be a 4 week project, starting the 28th of november.
Is my project really only a 2 week project?
Also just recently switched to Kubuntu and wonder if it is ok to do the video on here.

In my opinion, thats outside the scope of the project. Just say that all extensions for Joomla! are available on joomla.org.Also should I show myself browsing the directory and downloading xmap?

Oops! Sorry - it is, indeed, a 4-week project. Keep asking questions and interacting with the community; that's part of working in an open source community. Agree with Chad's comments (previous post.)dsadik wrote: Oh no i don't have the video yet ! I understood it to be a 4 week project, starting the 28th of november.

The thing I notice right off is that you're running Joomla! 1.5 in Legacy Mode. I believe that it would be best to make sure everything is J! 1.5 Native. Do you have to run in Legacy mode? I think its probably better if everything is native 1.5 code.

I think Xmap needed to be in legacy mode, do you know of a better extension to use? Are their any other problems?

Try JoomlaXplorer:
http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomlaxplorer/
Its supported natively by J! 1.5.

Daniel -
Can you upload your videos to Google Video - you can leave them private - so they aren't included in the search - and then just post the URL. If you redo something, you can delete the video when complete.
If that is too difficult, please let me know, otherwise, it should help more people view your work.
Thanks!

Re: 054 - Create a Video demonstrating how to install a Joomla! extension.
Amy,
I couldn't upload to Google Video as they dont accept flash movies which is the only format that Wink exports to as far as I know.
Do you know of a workaround for this?
Also is there any other problems with the movie as it looks like I will have to redo it and don't want to make the same mistakes twice.
Thanks
-DS
P.S. if you are having trouble opening the swf try opening it with IE7 or FF2

Is there any other things wrong with it as I really need feedback soon as my deadline is the 28th? Do you guys have problems opening it? If you you can try just telling it to open up with IE7 or FF2.
