025 - Introduce at least 3 new end users to the Joomla! Back end for admin...

Post by balvanboy » Tue Dec 18, 2007 5:09 pm

Hi again! Here is a task, let's work.  :)
Introduce at least 3 new end users to the Joomla! Back end for
administrators and write a report on what happens
Contents
[hide]

    * 1 Description
    * 2 Skills Needed
    * 3 Difficulty
    * 4 Work Product
    * 5 Extra Credit (optional)

Description

This task involves user interface research. The goal of the task is to
identify areas in where users make errors or are confused. The report from
this research can then be used by developers to improve the user interface
in future versions of Joomla!.

For this task you will work with three people who have never used Joomla!
before.

Using a Joomla! 1.5 site with one of the default templates and no
modifications have users attempt tasks such as:

  1. Adding a new user
  2. Installing a template
  3. Changing the default template
  4. Moving a module to a new position
  5. Creating a menu link
  6. Creating a custom text module
  7. Set global article preferences

I did not write this task, but I think what this is saying is you are to have three people who have not used Joomla! to work with you. Your goal is to evaluate how easy or complicated certain tasks are for new users.

Before beginning the testing, you should create a website that uses the sample content and normal Joomla! v 1.5 options. This website would be installed and configured using one of the two default templates (either Milkyway or BEEZ). Do not make any modifications to the template.

Then, ask the users to do the tasks identified in the list. You cannot give them any information. Your job is to record the results of the testing.

Hope that helps,
Amy :)

Well, i work on this and your information are helpful for me. Can't replay early.  I've tested some beta user's just to see how going.

All is good just on 4th step users's don't know to do. Simple i told him to change on defauilt theme logo, some css parametars, module position's. That is enough? If don't please told me what to begginers on this step. For people who first use Joomla! that is confusing. For other steps we don't have problem yet. :)

And more one question. Did i to write in OF Writer report?

Tnx Amy! :)

cheers

Thanks so much for your prompt response!

Yes, please write your report using Open Office Writer, if at all possible.

I am certain that there were tasks in that list that a beginner cannot do, without instruction.

I always say, "Joomla! is easy to use, once you know how to use it."  ;)

We can certainly make improvements! And, this type of information will be helpful. Just write up what happened, even if it's not "good news" that is the purpose of this type of testing, to find what is difficult to do.

Thanks - look forward to reading your report,
Amy :)

Excellent report - very informative. I really like usability testing - it reminds me not to assume - but to involve those who a system is intended to serve - and observe. Sometimes, the smallest changes can have such an important impact.

Your analysis was very good. I accept this as complete.

Very much appreciated this, thanks:
It is obvious that younger subjects are better in IT terminology understanding and learning the principles of Joomla! administration. Future is in the youth, and they should be given the most oportunities to learn and express themselves.

After finishing their tasks, all the subjects were satisfied whith the learned. According to their statements, one could tell that all of them will continue to work with Joomla! –which I am personally very delighted for.
Please upload your work to Google and we'll mark it as complete. Thanks, again,for your important contributions to the Joomla! community,
Amy :)

Issue attachment storage quota exceeded. :(

Could somebody upload a copy of this to the JoomlaPlace.org/ghop space?

Tnx
