Joomla User Group- Texas

Post by Basetballjones » Sat May 19, 2007 3:04 pm

Joomla! Texas User Group

Calling all Texans to build a User Group or several dpending on how spread out we are.
Texas is a big place, so we may need to form JUGs for Austin, Dallas, and Gulf Coast areas depending on where everyone is.

Being the growing technological power as we are, it's time to show our pride and our prowess for web design and all things Joomla!

With rumours abound that Austin will be a future host of Joomla Day, it would be only fitting to meet them with our own dedicated group(s).

Chew on it a little, let me know where you're at and how far you can travel and any ideas for the initiation of a user group.

We have the beginnings of a user group in the Dallas Fort Worth area as an offshoot of the Dallas Internet Entrepreneur Meetup Group. (Meetup.com)

We are getting a regular turnout and have launched a separate meetup rather than being a subteam for the Internet Entrepreneur group.  We've seen a lot of interest in what Joomla has to offer and have received some interest from local PHPers as well. We're about to launch a Joomla!Dallas / Fort Worth web site as well.

So it's going pretty well.  :)

I've been dealing with costly health issues for the past couple months, so I haven't been able to move on an Austin group.

I should be able to do something soon, I'm wrapping up recover/therapy.

Austin is like a second silicon valley, so I know I could garner plenty of interest in J! once I get back on me feet.
Not to mention, I'm anticipating a lot of interest from potential customers as well- there's a lot of techs and geeks with every skill besides coding, and they have leaning on wordpress for far too long

I'm interested in the progress in this as well - any progress on either front?

--edit----
A little more research into the MeetUp.com group that Geekette mentioned shows that a spinoff Joomla Users Group - DFW was created and from that I found they have a new website at:

Thanks, Joshua. We've got a lot of talented folks, but there is SO MUCH to learn, and so few folks who are truly in the know when it comes to the most relevant core group activities.

I apologize for not updating this thread when we launched our new website.  We're hoping to build a strong Joomla! community in the DFW area and just launched http://www.joomladallas.org recently.  We're using Meetup.com to schedule our meetings because it's a good way for people with similar interests to connect locally.

If you are local to the Dallas / Fort Worth area, our next meeting is:

JUST AN UPDATE: @basketballjones - we'd love to have Joomla Day here in Dallas sometime. We have a very mature, advanced following among the independent web development companies around town.

Regarding the Joomla website, as you probably know, it has been complete for several years now. Wilma and I co-organized this group back in early 2007 and it has been going strong ever since. We have strong attendance each month where an overhead presentation is given on a different topic each time. We host several user group meetings each month due to the fact that Dallas Fort Worth is about 60 miles across (That's a 2 hour drive in rush hour traffic.)
Our satellite user group meetings are held in Garland, Frisco, and Fort Worth/Arlington. All events are listed on the Meetup calendar. ~Debbie
