I updated my Joomla! 1.5RC4 with stable package and now it works very well.
I overwrite all file.
I verified that there wasn't difference in databases between 1.5RC4 and 1.5stable (see installation/sql/mysql/diff.sql).

Yes, you can overwrite all file just unpacked the file of stable package or you can find the different between RC4 package and stable package with a comparison software (likes meld for linux and winmerge for windows) and overwrite only the different files.
In the upgrading tutorial you can read that there isn't difference in database between RC4 and stable version. If you do this your site will upgrade to stable version. Remember make a backup before.

Nobody mention the template folder, if you created a template you gotta pay attention to don't overwrite it.

If you have RC4, you can just unzip the .zip to the folder.
Since zip will only overwrite existing files, it will not change or affect your templates in any way.
you can upgrade your sites with content and custom themes to the new version without any loss in design or the data.
Remember to take backup first.

It won't effect your templates unless you edited an already existing Template, like a Joomla Default template.

You all may also want to do a fresh install, and just import your databases, components, and templates again. This way, you don't have any files that might be lingering behind with old code.

Sounds reasonable. Newb question: Are file additions / deprecations noted in the changelogs for Joomla updates? If they are, we could just use the list of deprecated files for this.

I've done this at my test site and it works just fine. It was a fresh install of RC4 though, so if you've got content already, don't take this as a verification that things will not be overwritten.

Fresh RC4 -> 1.5 Stable = Unzip, delete install folder. Done. That's one confirm.

Same here for me. I did this on a Live site....

Backed up files and database.
Deleted everything.
Uploaded new files.
Deleted Instalation folder, install.php and configuration.php-dht
Uploaded my config file and favicons
Everything works a treat.
I didnt bother saving my template as I was planning on using the purity template which is very nice btw.

Very easy and smooth upgrade. THANK YOU.

I downloaded 1.5, unzipped it over the top of the local copy of RC4 on my local machine, now named that folder "patched15" and uploaded all of it except the configuration.php file onto the server over the top of the working RC4 there already.  Delete the installation folder,  Joomla is working fine.

This was not a 'commercial site' so I did it the 'quick way' not recommended for business ventures, etc, etc, etc.

disco, can one-up you on that.  I spent last night doing a sandbox install and configure of 1.5 RC4.  Went online about 2:30am this morning looking for an extension and saw Stable was released!  Oh well, gotta happen to someone. :-\

Glad to see the upgrade won't be a pain.

Yep, I've got a bunch of add-ons too, including CB and Fireboard, and I've just upgraded from RC4 to 1.5 stable by overwriting the code of the entire release. All looking good. Well done guys!

I have a problem....

The server i am using, uses PHP 5.0.4 this surposely doesn't work with the new joomla! TYPCIAL!

Do you think its best idea to just install Joomla 1.0.14 until such time that joomla fix this??

That same thing happened to me with RC3.
Two days later they released RC4.

Now, it's Stable.

That's two installs in a month and a half. At least it's good practice!

I did the same thing. It was remarkably painless and uneventful.
And I checked "Help>System Info" and sure enough, 1.5 Stable is running with no problems.

It's nice when things work like they're supposed to.
