151 - Create a new Joomla! v 1.5 website for a not-for-profit organization.

http://code.google.com/p/google-highly- ... ail?id=151

Hey guys,

Well, it's 2am and I have finally got this task! I am really excited about this because firstly I love helping out the community, but secondly this'll be the first full site developed in Joomla 1.5 that I've done.

DESCRIPTION:
Create a new Joomla! v 1.5 website for a not-for-profit organization. This
could include a place of worship, a club, a humanitarian or missionary
site, a non-profit organization in your community, or for your school. It
is preferred if the site uses all three SEF URL options and several
extensions created by Joomla! GHOP contestants.

When the site is complete, prepare an overview of the website, sharing
lessons learned, site highlights, pictures of the website, and
comments/quotes from those who will use and maintain the site. This
overview can be written or video based. It should be developed in such a
way that it could be used by others considering if Joomla! might meet their
needs for a similar site and purpose.

The contestant is expected to be in close contact with the Joomla! GHOP
judges and community by posting in the Joomla! forums every few days to
share project status information, request assistance, and share ideas with
others. It is important to engage the community and include appropriate
feedback into the project, as well.

After a Joomla! GHOP judge acknowledges you have claimed this task, please
read http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,239201.0.html and respond in
the Joomla! forums. Your first post should announce who the site will be
built and confirmation that a Joomla! v 1.5 site is not already available
for this purpose.

Resources:

    * Install XAMPP and Joomla! -
http://developers.facebook.com/get_started.php
    * Backup and Restore a Database using phpMyAdmin -
http://code.google.com/p/google-highly- ... tail?id=50
    * Configuration SEF URLs -
http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,240302.0.html

Skills needed:
    * Communication skills to talk to those who will use the website
    * Design and logic skills to make end user requirements into an easy to
use site
    * Creativity and problem solving skills

Difficulty
Simple

Work Product
    * Functioning Joomla! v 1.5 website, updated to the newest release (RC
or final) based on ending date, accessible on the WWW Licensing

    * All code must be created using the GNU General Public License version
2. http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-license ... .html#SEC4

Documentation written for this task must be made available under the
Joomla! Electronic Documentation License.

Extra Credit

This task can be done very simply, with limited functionality, or, the
developer can create a fully functional environment of some complexity. The
presentation of the site in written or video form is also an important part
of the judging of this task. The depth of implementation will be the extra
credit opportunity for this task.

Time Limit
4 weeks
I haven't got a site to make just yet, however I am posting around and will find someone by tomorrow. If you have someone for it let me know.

I responded to a post in the Non-profit forum area that might be interesting. Please take a look and see what you think.

Thanks!

Okie Dokie, here's my.. er.. plan :)

Basically the site I'm going to do is: http://www.narellanrfs.org.au

I feel honoured already that I'm being allowed to do their site, they do some amazing work :)

They asked me to, and I quote, include:

The ability to post news articles, photo galleries, mailing lists, event calendars (like training schedules etc.), and also have general information about our brigade.

So, this is what I'm thinking..

Theme: JA Purity (which one the Joomla contest) - will need to check with them obviously and make sure they're happy with it. The top image on the template will be a group shot, or a photo of the building or something.

Plugins:
The ability to post news articles - already built in
photo galleries - imagebrowser, still in beta but looks very promising.
mailing lists - acajoom
event calendars (like training schedules etc.) - no idea what I can use here.. any ideas? I nearly bought a component for them today, but I realised it's only legacy j1.5.. not native :(
also have general information about our brigade. - easily done, already built in

Any changes? Any suggested GHOP extensions I should suggest adding?

So there's my plan so far, hopefully it'll turn out alright.

I like that idea a lot and that is a great group to help. I love the idea of a group shot at the top and JA Purity is a great choice for jumping off.

What I usually do when I make a site is

1. Think about who the users are and what they think they want and what they should really want.
There are usally several different groups, and you want to design navigation in a way that makes sense for each one.

IMO navigation should always be where you start.
It helps to draw it.

2. Think about function. Here is where you can start to slowly introduce extensions. What is the purpose of the site for your different user groups? How will they accomplish those purposes? What are the best tools for doing that?

3. Think about design.  How can desgin help your visitors? How will your design choices make them feel? What messages will it give  them?

When I look at the existing site, I don'tget agood idea of what they want to accomplish, but does it work for them? WHat do they like and dislike about their site now?

Just some thoughts, take what you want from them. :)

Hey,

I've been talking to a member of the brigade, Partrick, and we have just about finished the site. There are just a few bugs I have found with the template they chose.

Basically I speoke to them about functionality.. and I was surprised with the amount Partrick was about to do, even without any prior knowledge about Joomla.

Thanks for responding to my post, I thought no-one was going to mentor me on this one :P

Any idea why using the template 68portal on joomla 1.5 stable gives an error "Invalid Key" when I try and submit an article through the front end?

Either way.. once the site is complete (which hopefully is today) I'll write up some documentation for them, and then do the presentation for here.

Here's why Elin is asking you that. She was probably planning to double check the template for you. But, you can use Masterchief's description to do so, yourself. You need to add the token to the logon form.

Take a look and see what you think!

It logs in fine, but whenever I try and submit an article through the ONLINE system it doesn't work.

The new site isn't launched yet, and there are some content I am waiting for.. however basically all that I have to do is up already, hence why I'm claiming this as completed.

Once they finish getting the content in I will assist them in moving it to their proper domain. There is a bit of hassle they're going through with getting access to the domain, hence why I haven't been able to do it as yet.

Hope it's acceptable.

I don't know if you are seeing this or not, but when I go to the site, the really long "words" (like "mnfmnpiomfsdipmsdfikdfmnispmfsdiopfm" and "dsipmfdspifmsdpfmsdpfmsdpofmdspfmdposm") overlap each other and the random image, most read article, etc.

Other than that, the site looks great!

Well, the reason his long words are doing that is because they are too long. If smaller, more word-sized words are used, that will go away. So, Michael, shorten up those example words, dude! You are blowing your beautiful template! ;-)

LOVE IT! Love the presentation - look what you were able to do quickly! AND, we don't even have a full set of extensions since J! 1.5 is so new, but you were still able to do what you needed to do and it is SPECTACULAR. That encourages me, very much.

Glad to see you using SEF URLs.

Move the new look. It's so much nicer - like a great hair cut, or something - and it also seems to have a great deal more functionality, as well. Again, in only a handful of days! (I'm guessing as many hours as you could spare - but - none the less - impressive!)

Recommend:
1. Copy the BEEZ template html folder to your template folder. In that one move, you begin using template overrides. That will get rid of a lot of that old table output with one easy move.

2. Try to validate to transitional, at least. It shouldn't be too hard.

Fabulous! Thanks!
Amy :)

That's weird.  Do you have to include an IFrame to embed Google Maps?

Did you get it working? The map looks great.

If not, are you using a wysiwyg editor? If you turn it off you may be able to insert.  I know there is an issue about iframes in the tracker, however.

You might want to try Benjamin Hättasch's Google Map Module.

You can configure it, as needed, and then insert it into an article using the LoadModule plugin.

So, the module could be defined for the googlemap position.

Then, in your article you would type: {loadposition googlemap} and it will appear there.

Might be better than an iFrame approach, although I have no problem with that, either. I believe the problems that Elin is referring to have to do with the iFrame component, rather than simply using an iFrame within your HTML.

Site's looking great!

Can't do that because of the map layers that they wanted.

However, I took the {loadposition} mambot and made my own module, then whacked it up! And it worked :D http://69.50.214.5/~narenrfs/about-us/station.html

Sweet! I think you mean plugin, though.  ;)

Can I get you to upload your presentation? We now have space on Google. Also, if you want to upload the module, as well, that would be cool (I don't know if you took it to that level, or not, to create a installable module. If not, no problem, of course!)

It is exceptional what you have accomplished in a short period of time. Nothing against the last site, but, it does look considerably better. Easier to find information and certainly far more attractive.

Thanks!

plugin.. wooopss sorry! Still getting used to the new name :P

How come my other task was changed? http://code.google.com/p/google-highly- ... tail?id=15

The module IS installable, but it really isn't anything in terms of end-user friendly (it was hard coded).

I'll upload the pdf now!

Oh, I changed the upper lower case so that it matched. Just doing some cleanup to ensure you don't have trouble with Google when claiming your prizes.

If you want to upload the module, even if it's hardcoded, it would be of interest to the judges, I am certain.

Thanks!
