117 - Create art that captures All Together, as a Whole

Post by trombonechamp » Mon Jan 21, 2008 5:17 pm

This is my last issue.  :'(  Wait... If I can finish it in 36 hours, I can choose a new task!   Right...

Anyway, the link to the task is:
http://code.google.com/p/google-highly- ... %20Summary

I am going to do this in Blender.  My idea is to make a bunch of human heads, and then line them up to make them look like the Joomla! logo.  I have a feeling it won't look that great, though, so it may change soon.

Thank you everyone!

Here is what I have done so far.  It is by no means complete.  The only problem: I left it to render (this is 1 frame!!) for 45 minutes, and the render screen was still black.  I tried that twice!  :o  I will leave it on overnight and see if I get anything.  That's what I get for giving 30+ people hair on a cheap Celeron M...

Thank you for answering eight community member questions today, including this one and this one.

There is no doubt that you are a community builder. You do very well working with people and you notice what others have done and share it appropriately.

Oh. Max, you're using blender right?

This may be the problem Amy http://www.blender.org/ - the software that he's using to make it. It's probably required to open that file, unless Max can export it into a bitmap.

Yeah, sorry for that.  You need Blender.  It is FOSS, though!  :)  You have to right click and "Save Target as".
It's probably required to open that file, unless Max can export it into a bitmap.
I tried to render it, and it takes far too long.  I am working on a new idea that doesn't require hours to render.
Thank you for answering eight community member questions today, including this one and this one.
Wow!  Eight!?!  I just realized, "Hey, Joomla! is more than just GHOP!" so I started answering some more questions.  I plan to do more than just eight!  8)

Thanks!

Okay, here is draft 2.  I think it is time to explain some of the symbolism.

-The lone snowflake is an individual.  This individual is beautiful by itself, but...
-The snowman is Joomla! (or really any foss project).  It is created snowflake by snowflake, until you have something great.
-Notice where the snowman is looking
-The quote seemed to connect to the the whole scene by being completely opposite.  My analogy is to snow, the karate master's is to a fire.

Hope you like it!

Hey, is it possible to save in PNG format? the Jpg is kinda making things fuzzy where the colors meet.

Other than that, awesome!

Looks very nice!
Don't know if that's allowed for the Joomla! Logo.
I thought it should have a white or black background.

Does anybody know for sure?  The png had a transparent background.  I thought you could use it on any background where it was obvious what the logo was.

I don't think it is "busy" though.  Look on pg. 19 of the Joomla! brand manual.

I "retouched" the colors.  What do you think?

P.S.-Is the logo fine?  It is against an almost black backdrop.

I think the logo is perfect as well. The contrast should be enough like this :)

Well done!

Do you think it is ready like this or are you going to add or change things?

I'm not sure.  I am waiting for a few more people to look at it.  I really don't want to, because that means GHOP is over, but I will if people think it is.

So for anyone out there: tell me what you think!

It looks great. I'm not really sure if there's anything you can really add or change at this point, but good work.

The Joomla! logo should be ok, since the background color is consistent with the rest of the image.

Here is a completely new one.  I uploaded a low-res jpeg so I didn't have to do the final render.  The things I didn't like about the other one:
-The snowman was a shadow.  The snowman represented the Joomla! project.  This makes it seem uninviting.  Now it is just emerging into light, showing the opportunities are just beginning.
-The image of the sky I used was low-res.  I really wanted to do a 4000x3000 render for the final.  I couldn't find a good PD one for this, so I took my own.

How is this one in comparison to the old?

Don't know which one I prefer.
I like the idea that the snowman is brighter right now.
The individual/lonely snowflake is perhaps a bit too big right now.
The other background I liked more.
In the text they talk about the 'entire circle of friends'. I think it would be nice to show this as well in your picture.
Perhaps a circle of snowmans, the different open source project not concurrenting, but working together.

I tried two more ideas relating to more than one snowman.  These are draft renders, without the text/logo.

I fit all of the symbolism in! :pop The only thing I am missing that I liked before is the campfire.  The problem I was having with multiple snowmen around the campfire before was the fact that it kind of ruined some of the symbolism (light emerging onto the snowman).  This includes more symbolism: you are backed by the entire free software community.

Let me know what you think.
Thanks!  :)

I have enjoyed watching this wonderful group of community member talk. It makes me feel so good to have gotten to know each of you - you are all so amazing.

I like the look of the snow people congregated around the fire - but - snow melts - so it looked a bit suicidal to me! ;)

I think the use of the Joomla! logo was perfect. Max is correct - provided the background is not busy, and on a fairly solid to solid backing. Looks good.

One thing I kept thinking as I saw the snow and looked at the solid logo was that soon the logo would become the snow.

Love this --> you are backed by the entire free software community.

Max - you are wonderful. What a great pleasure to work with you and to be made better by your support and involvement. Thank you!

Amy :)
