147 - Create a new Joomla! v 1.5 website for a not for profit organization.

Post by netantho » Sat Jan 05, 2008 6:48 pm

Hello,

this is my 2nd task.
My first task
Create a new Joomla! v 1.5 website for a not-for-profit organization. This
could include a place of worship, a club, a humanitarian or missionary
site, a non-profit organization in your community, or for your school. It
is preferred if the site uses all three SEF URL options and several
extensions created by Joomla! GHOP contestants.

When the site is complete, prepare an overview of the website, sharing
lessons learned, site highlights, pictures of the website, and
comments/quotes from those who will use and maintain the site. This
overview can be written or video based. It should be developed in such a
way that it could be used by others considering if Joomla! might meet their
needs for a similar site and purpose.

The contestant is expected to be in close contact with the Joomla! GHOP
judges and community by posting in the Joomla! forums every few days to
share project status information, request assistance, and share ideas with
others. It is important to engage the community and include appropriate
feedback into the project, as well.

After a Joomla! GHOP judge acknowledges you have claimed this task, please
read http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,239201.0.html and respond in
the Joomla! forums. Your first post should announce who the site will be
built and confirmation that a Joomla! v 1.5 site is not already available
for this purpose.

Resources:

    * Install XAMPP and Joomla! -
http://developers.facebook.com/get_started.php
    * Backup and Restore a Database using phpMyAdmin -
http://code.google.com/p/google-highly- ... tail?id=50
    * Configuration SEF URLs -
http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,240302.0.html

Skills needed:
    * Communication skills to talk to those who will use the website
    * Design and logic skills to make end user requirements into an easy to
use site
    * Creativity and problem solving skills

Difficulty
Simple

Work Product
    * Functioning Joomla! v 1.5 website, updated to the newest release (RC
or final) based on ending date, accessible on the WWW Licensing

    * All code must be created using the GNU General Public License version
2. http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-license ... .html#SEC4

Documentation written for this task must be made available under the
Joomla! Electronic Documentation License.

Extra Credit

This task can be done very simply, with limited functionality, or, the
developer can create a fully functional environment of some complexity. The
presentation of the site in written or video form is also an important part
of the judging of this task. The depth of implementation will be the extra
credit opportunity for this task.

Time Limit
4 weeks
I introduced myself on the first task but I didn't write about my webmaster experience yet.

So, I began making websites 5 years ago.
Currently, my online websites are net-libre (fr), freetorrent (I help the main webmaster, fr) and I plan to make a new website for my LUG CLX

I have decided to create a new website for the social and cultural center of Cosne/Loire (fr), it's a 1901's law association so a non-profit organization in France.
I know an employee of this association, so I will work with him to have a website that answers to their needs.

I'll share the code and the database structure to bring something to the community.

I'll try to be more present on the irc channels.

It is so exciting to see that you are working on a Joomla! v 1.5 website for a fabulous organization, such as the social and cultural center of Cosne/Loire. It sounds to be an important service that they serve.

There is no need to create a JoomlaCode repository for this. Just help get the website working for them, and then provide a bit of an introduction to the website and perhaps interview someone who will use the site.

I am very excited to see this site progress. Please update us every few days to let us know how the site is proceeding and if we can provide any assistance to you in this important job.

Thank you very much!
Amy :)

OK,
I defined with the website manager the goals of the future website :
  • Fresh & nice new design
  • Easy & fast maintenance
  • Calendar
  • Antispam system
  • Keywords for searching bots
  • Events management (date, place ...)
  • Comments on articles
  • Forum
  • Create an integration of the future social network
  • Maps
  • Easy & embedded multimedia (pdf, images, videos, sounds)
  • Make differences between an event and an activity (for example once/week)
  • Easy & attractive syndication (rss, atom) and newsletter
  • Make sure it displays correctly on IE6, IE7, FF1.x, FF2.x, FF3.x, Opera
  • Contact form
  • Security
  • Photo galleries
The 2 main goals are communication and interactivity with visitors.

Here are some news from my project.
I have installed Joomla : Go to the website.
I have looked at other tasks, I have already used some documentation about SEF, I'll use some other tasks later.
I installed french translations packages and so I configured SEF.

Next step : create a new design.

Do you have this in debug mode? I get a ton of code at the bottom of the page.

I have decided to enable the debug mode to check if all is ok for the development phase.

For the design, here is the design I'm working on.

That is coming together NICELY! I like seeing Joomla! put to this type of use - a cultural and social center - a place for people. Very cool.

As a reminder, we are in the last week of the contest.

Have fun!
Amy :)
