156 - Create a new Joomla! v 1.5 website for a not-for-profit organization.

Post by Ashton_Murphy » Wed Jan 23, 2008 10:39 pm

Hello, everyone. :)
This is my third task, here.
Create a new Joomla! v 1.5 website for a not-for-profit organization. This
could include a place of worship, a club, a humanitarian or missionary
site, a non-profit organization in your community, or for your school. It
is preferred if the site uses all three SEF URL options and several
extensions created by Joomla! GHOP contestants.

When the site is complete, prepare an overview of the website, sharing
lessons learned, site highlights, pictures of the website, and
comments/quotes from those who will use and maintain the site. This
overview can be written or video based. It should be developed in such a
way that it could be used by others considering if Joomla! might meet their
needs for a similar site and purpose.

The contestant is expected to be in close contact with the Joomla! GHOP
judges and community by posting in the Joomla! forums every few days to
share project status information, request assistance, and share ideas with
others. It is important to engage the community and include appropriate
feedback into the project, as well.

After a Joomla! GHOP judge acknowledges you have claimed this task, please
read http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,239201.0.html and respond in
the Joomla! forums. Your first post should announce who the site will be
built and confirmation that a Joomla! v 1.5 site is not already available
for this purpose.

Resources:

    * Install XAMPP and Joomla! -
http://developers.facebook.com/get_started.php
    * Backup and Restore a Database using phpMyAdmin -
http://code.google.com/p/google-highly- ... tail?id=50
    * Configuration SEF URLs -
http://forum.joomla.org/index.php/topic,240302.0.html

Skills needed:

    * Communication skills to talk to those who will use the website
    * Design and logic skills to make end user requirements into an easy to
use site
    * Creativity and problem solving skills

Difficulty
Simple

Work Product
    * Functioning Joomla! v 1.5 website, updated to the newest release (RC
or final) based on ending date, accessible on the WWW Licensing

    * All code must be created using the GNU General Public License version
2. http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-license ... .html#SEC4

Documentation written for this task must be made available under the
Joomla! Electronic Documentation License.

Extra Credit

This task can be done very simply, with limited functionality, or, the
developer can create a fully functional environment of some complexity. The
presentation of the site in written or video form is also an important part
of the judging of this task. The depth of implementation will be the extra
credit opportunity for this task.

Time Limit
4 weeks
I'm just clarifying, does this have to be a website that will be used by the non-for-profit organization, and if it is, do they have to pay to get a domain name and hosting? Or am I to do that on my website (http://nfpo.ashtonmurphy.com/)

Thank you for the clarification,

EDIT: I am fairly sure that I have a Non-for-profit organization which I can design for. Feel free to ignore the question stated above. :p

You are absolutely *not* expected to pay for their hosting.  I am so sorry that I did not say that in the description.

Ashton - hopefully, you can find someone who wants the benefit of your hard work and expertise - and is willing to pay their own hosting. There are very inexpensive hosting out there that a church or club or other non-profit group should be able to afford.

Glad to see you doing this - it's a fun one. Keep in mind the limited time - you might only get the basic site started, for now, but either help them take it over for continue with them later.

Thanks!
Amy :)

Okay, thanks for that Amy. :) I'm 99% sure I've found a NFP organization that wants me to design a website for them, and then even if I just get the basics done, I can finish it off after and then add it to my portfolio of websites designed.
I'll keep in touch, thank you. :)
EDIT: Adding words I now realize I left out. xD

Thanks Amy. I was just wondering, if it's a four week time limit, does that mean I only have one week to complete it?
Thanks,

The contest is done on Feb 3 (I believe) - next Sunday. So, since you claimed the task on Jan 21, 2008, you will not get a full four weeks. There are a number of you who started websites around the same time. Obviously, you can't get everything done, so, if you want to do your best job at addressing the basics and get the site started, that is a great task, in our opinion.

Thanks!
Amy :)

Okay, thank you. I should get the website. So far it seems that I won't need much for the website, but the organisation is still discussing it. x.X
But they're getting in contact with me in the next day or two, and if not, I have another NFP organisation in mind, so I should get the basics done at the very least.
Thank you,

Latest update.. Everything seemed to be going smoothly.. but now the NFP client (http://shiftarts.ca/) is being really stubborn and difficult with the Template choice.. quite frustrating as I don't have that long left. :S
But oh well. Keep on the positive side and hopes everything comes around! :D

Ashton -

Hang in there! You might suggest to them that you need a template choice for this week and next week, and then they can change, as desired. That will get us through the judging period.

Sorry for the misunderstanding of time available. It's great to see you are responding in a productive and positive way. That's going to work well for you in the future.

I forgot to say - that is a cool non-profit to be building a site for! Will look good on your resume! It's a classy showcase piece for Joomla!, too.

Try to have fun with it - don't let the time frame stress you out.

Ashton,

Seems like a great project. Working with clients is always challenging!

Thanks for the support, Amy and Elin! :D
But ShiftArts have dropped out because all of a sudden, they've decided they want a completely Flash designed website.
So I guess I'll have to drop out of this task. :/
Oh well, it's been an amazing experience! Thank you all so much for the amount of uplifting confidence and support! It's been an honour. :)

Possibly, but if someone else has a NFP organization already, it's better to give them a chance, rather than me taking it up still looking for one.
Thanks for the concern MiCCAS. Best of luck with yours. It seems everything's going great for you. :)

It's too late for someone else to claim it, so it's you or no-one!

Add me on MSN if you need any assistance at all.. Let me know if you can't find an organisation, I'll help you find one!

Really? I hope that doesn't mean it's already been kicked of the list for me too.. lol. :P

And that would be fantastic, MiCCAS, if you wouldn't mind doing that. And if there's anything you need help with that I can help out in, please let me know. Thank you very much! :D
