Noob question - user photo gallery for Joomla 1.5

Post by ronronmx » Thu Feb 28, 2008 8:52 pm

Hi and sorry in advance if this has already been posted, but i couldn't find a definitive answer to my question:

I want my registered users to be able to upload their own photos for other ppl to see, and make their own categories if possible or upload them in pre-defined categories. Which photo gallery extension lets you do that ?

I have been looking at:

1. RSGallery 2
2. Gallery 2
3. Zoom

Do any of those 3 let you do what i want to do ? I am not asking "which is the better one" i just need to know which extension to use.

Thanks for any help you guys can give me, and again sorry if this as been ask 100 times before...
Stephane

Zoom allows you to set users to be able to register and create galleries, you alo have a whole host of other abilities via the backend.

Just installed Zoom and nothing, even the web site failed to load. Put in the bots and modules still no go. Any clues.

Try RSGallery2. I use it and my members love it. Even the people who can barely use a computer have been able to use it.

using RS gallery2 on a 1.0.14 site and agree but just can't seem to get it to work in 1.5.1

Edit:
Just tried uploading it again and get this.

"Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /share/storage/01/fr/frizzell/nmids/libraries/joomla/filesystem/archive/zip.php on line 318"

Any clues?

I have installed RSGallery2 and really like it ( although i haven't tried the others yet ). But i have a question for RSGallery2 about user created galleries:

right now if a user creates a new gallery, he cannot set the permissions for it. So every registered user is able to upload their photos in *his* gallery. The only way to set permissions (that i know of) is in the back end, which is not gonna work for me, especially if a lot of galleries are being created by my users....

Is there a way to let users set their own permissions for their galleries from the front end?

Thanks ;)

Okay, Clearly some of you have got it to work, why can't I? I go to Install/Uninstall and try to upload the zip file. I get the previously mentioned error after it tries to and fails to upload.

With my limited knowledge I suspect this is a path issue but not a clue how to resolve it.

Should I cut out the zip install and unzip on my Mac then try to ftp into the components folder? ???

Word Warrior,

I suspect that your issue is that RSGallery requires Legacy mode in Joomla 1.5 to work. To enable Legacy Mode, go to your Joomla Admin page, then Extensions --> Plugin Manager then select the System - Legacy Plugin and set Enabled status to Yes. I have attached a screen shot of what it should look like.

Thanks for that but I already have legacy enabled for Community Builder to work. Of course, it would be great if all these extensions could work without legacy then I would have the confidence to move my live sites to 1.5 :(

EDIT POINT: this is the error I get.

Yes there is, in your host's root directory, there should be a php.ini file ( if they allow you to access it that is ). You can change a bunch of stuff in there, as well as the time limit and upload size. You need to ask your web host if you have access to the php.ini file, and if you do then just ask them to help you find it if you have troubles locating it.

Recently successfully installed the latest nightly build of RSGallery2 and the backend works fine. single and mass upload works but templates are not loading so unable to display gallery at the moment. Waiting for the next Software version to be published. (Currently SVN 720) :(

Hey guys,

I see that RSGallery2 has quite a few issues...
Where can I download Zoom? What is the fullname of that module? Is it zoomCat?

True, there are some issues but they are up to nightly build SVN 781 at present and RSGallery2 is now working pretty well. I don't think they are far from a stable version.

Hi there,
So you are using RSGallery2 eh? I am going to make a website with a photo gallery, where users would be able to upload their own photos etc. Do you think RSGallery2 would be the right choice? or is there anything better?

Unfortunately the front end upload doesn't work yet but I don't think it's far off now. I think RSGallery2 is the best available for Joomla although people rave about Coppermine but it is massively complex in comparison.
I'm persevering with RSGallery2 as it's what I've been using for a long time in J1.0xxx

Was this ever resolved. I need exactly what this thread began on. A photo gallery that designated users can use to upload photos from the front end into albums that they create and manage (superadministrator must be able to manage also). Must be stable version. Legacy already enabled so that doesn't matter.

I'm looking for a component like this to.

Is there a component that has this, and automaticly compresses the pictures that users upload.
I have tried RSgallery2 and it works great, but from what i understand the images that users upload are stored directly on the server as they are. this is a problem if people want to upload many images that are 3-4 Mb each. I would like the option to compress the files to 500-1000K. Anybody know if this can be done??

another problem is that the front-end upload function only allows one file to be uploaded at the time. I would like something like the java uploader that phoca image gallery uses, where users can browse their images, mark the ones they want to upload, and upload them all in one go.

i am fairly new to joomla! btw.

I ended up using Phoca Gallery. It does allow the user front end upload, file creation, and even has java upload. You'd have to check on the compression. It didn't matter to me cause I compress mine before I upload. I haven't turned on the java uploader yet cause I am leary of it (just don't know enough about it).

Did this project Gallery2 with Joomla 1.5 die?

Post by scaife9999 » Wed Sep 15, 2010 6:15 am

After using gallery2 for many years in different versions and running it with Joomla 1.0.1.3 and Joomla 1.5.0.8 a do ask myself if this project just died away?

1. Over the past few years there has never been a final version - all you got it the all time alpha release on: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/gallery2_bridge/frs/
2. The only real running version for Joomla 1.5.08 is the one of sil3nt at: http://trac.4theweb.nl/g2bridge/browser/branches/sil3nt (he shall be praysed forever !) but the cb_plugin does not work with the new joomla version (at least I got no answer on any of all the forums about this subject the matter of integrating gallery2 into cb of Joomla 1.5.8. I do run it sucessfully with Joomla 1x though and it runs well without the cb integration on Joomla 1.5.8 and Gallery 2.3.) The last change sil3nt made was an change at the readme.txt which does not solve the problems.

3. I think it would be nice just to pronounce that one has no time for a project anymore. For example, the project is still runned under the name of micheal billand which did the last change exactly TWO year ago. Which, to be frank, is deadly to any project.

4. Maybe the administrators of Gallery2 could flag some project at least as half dead, just to let people know what to expect about it.

I hope I did not offend anybody, this would not be my intention in any way. I just would like to clear things for all new users of ther very much apprechiated Gallery2. So they would not spend hours and days trying to install Gallery2 into cb of Joomla 1.5.8.

I've given up with gallery2 using phoca gallery now. It isn't perfect but it works.

I've just downloaded phoca gallery and have found the same problem. I can only upload one file at a time. Java uploader doesn't work, Flash uploader doesn't work.

I've enabled Java Uploader in the parameters of phoca gallery AND in my Joomla Global Configation. Still, it doesn't work.

Obviously, I'm over looking something here, but can't figure out what it is.

Also, when Java Uploader is enabled in global configuration, I can not browse any folders in Media Manager.

I've been using Joomla for a few years now, but what should have taken me a few minutes to configure has taken most of the afternoon.

Ice Gallery is a fork of Zoom Gallery and is great for user galleries. Still in beta, but looks promising!

Once they get out of beta, I plan on using it.
