Dreamweaver and Joomla
I'm new to all this , but am eager... I have used several templates in Joomla and wanted more. So I purchased Dreamweaver and need some direction... do I need to add any extensions to Joomla to interface with Dreamweaver or is this all develop in Dreamweaver and promote the code when done? I thought I had read that you needed an extension, but I could be crazy.
Also, is there a way to load an existing Joomla Template into Dreamweaver? Thanks!

Something like this is a good start:
http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/
Or here for other tools:
http://extensions.joomla.org/index.php? ... &Itemid=35
And here for tutorials:

I'm not sure what you mean by both tools the first link is to a Dreamweaver extension tool.
The second link is to a few other similar tools.
The third is to tutorials on Joomla template design.
If you mean do you need more that one Dreamweaver extension tool the answer is no just make sure you install the one that allows you to design either Joomla 1.0+ series or Joomla 1.5+ series templates or if you mean installing to allow for designing both series I'm not sure.
Either way Once installed, which ever one you choose to use should add icons to Dreamweaver that allows you to insert snippets of code in where needed.

Re: Dreamweaver and Joomla
First and foremost thanks for the help.
I figured out why I was confused... I have loaded the tool bar for Dreamweaver that will help insert the snippets of code. This looks like it will shorten the typing.
Next question... I have a Joomla template that I'd like to view in Dreamweaver, make changes and them upload back to the web. Are there any handy instructions that would help me do this? Why you may ask am I interested in doing this.. .well, I learn better by seeing something already created, make changes to it and seeing the result. I chose Dreamweaver as it was discussed as the best WYSIWYG editor in Beginning Joomla! From Novice to Professional.
Thanks.

Re: Dreamweaver and Joomla
If you download this you will have a fully working 1.5+ version of Joomla that you can view and edit locally.
http://extensions.joomla.org/component/ ... Itemid,35/
Basically unzip and click the "run joomla" icon.
Note: if you get any popups asking to unblock make sure to say yes or it won't work.
Then all you need to do is navagate to the /templates/template name/index.php or other files of any template and jump right in and start making changes to get a feel of how it all works.
When you get stuck refer to the tutorials or search the forums.

Re: Dreamweaver and Joomla
An easy way to go about it would be to install the template locally and on the live site.
Then make whatever changes you like locally, once your happy with the result just FTP all the local template files over the live ones.
Is that the sort of thing you are after?

Re: Dreamweaver and Joomla
Sort of.. that is what i'm trying to do. I have not gotten it to work yet.. yes I can open the template file, the index file, ect, but the preview and design screens are not displaying, the only thing I can get to display is the code screen.. I must be doing something wrong. One would think that when a WYSIWYG is recommended in a book like Beginning Joomla that there would be some better explaination... Dan Rahmel shows an example in his book using Dreamweaver, but does not explain how he got it there.. just says I loaded it.

Re: Dreamweaver and Joomla
If you mean you won't to view the layout in either design, code or split (both) there should be a options on the top left of the editing area of dreamweaver.
Note: things like modules ect won't display in design view they will just be small php icons.

Is there a trail period with it or is it a purchase and use? Sorry for the questions I reviewed the site and did not see that.

Re: Dreamweaver and Joomla
In appreciation for all of the wonderful help that I've receved here, I'll try to add. Hopefully this will be useful to some of you.
I've been able to edit j1.5 templates without any plugins or anything else. Maybe I've been lucky because I'm making VERY mild modifications but here's what I did:
Unzip your template locally.
Open the "index.php" file in DW.
In the css Styles panel (right side on my screen) right click and select "attach a style sheet.
Next, I browsed to the "template.css" sheet and attached.
Now I can see the full page in DW and edit everything as you wish.
Hope this helps. BTW, I'm usung CS3 on home machine and CS4 on office machine.

Re: Dreamweaver and Joomla
tried what you explained and did work but after editing it did you later split the template.css from the index.php.

Re: Dreamweaver and Joomla
Depending on your site, I'd consider purchasing Artisteer. I bought it a year ago and havent used anyone's templates since. I now build all of my sites in Artisteer, html and joomla. for HTML sites, you must still add the metadata manually or in DW but the tools that you get to create the look that you want are unmatched.
You can download and playwith it but you can not save in the trial version.
These are just a few of the sites that I've built using Artisteer.
