JCal Pro in violation with GNU GPL *mod note:SOLVED...was not in violation*

Post by TitanKing » Wed Oct 10, 2007 2:48 pm

I have noted that although the extension JCal Pro is posted as GNU GPL it is in fact pay to download!? This is in direct violation with GNU GPL license? Is this just a mis configuration perhaps?

Regards,
Jason

Modified by Aoirthoir on 2007/11/02 at 23:33 to note in the title that no violation is occuring.

How is it violating GNU GPL?

http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html
"You may charge a fee for the physical act of transferring a copy, and you may at your option offer warranty protection in exchange for a fee."

**edit**
I just took a look at their website, and checking their Terms and Conditions, they are quite clear.
http://dev.anything-digital.com/content/view/4/122/

"JCal Pro is free software; you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License as published by the Free Software Foundation; either version 2 of the License, or (at your option) any later version. All existing copyrights (above) must be prominently visible on all modified versions of this software."

So, your rights are not infringed.  If you wanted to download all their GPL components and put them up on your own server for free download, that is your right.

The only thing you pay for is to download their software.

In my opinion, Vic has an excellent approach. He is respecting Joomla!'s license and clearly stating expectations with the end user community. As end users, we need to support our open source developers and Vic is helping us understand how to do that with his work. It's a good model, I think.

I just purchased Jcal Pro for use on a client's website. Quality software is worth paying for and $20 is very reasonable. Thank you Vic for making this available under GNU/GPL. I refuse to spend even one cent on any software that is encrypted or comes with a restrictive license.

Best of success :)
