For Joomla 1.0.12, just duplicate the 3 English files in the language folder and change name accordingly
swhahili.php
swahili.ignore.php
swahili.xml

Then edit the file and translate the strings.
Any question, post here.
When you finish, let us know. Would be nice to have this project available to all.

You are welcome. :)
Even better if you do it for Joomla 1.5.x

Same idea yeah? Find the language folder and change the bits in the 'english' --> 'kiswahili' in all files?

I just downloaded the latest version, opened the language folder, open the EnGB folder and see loads of files.

It seems more complicated than previous versions. I think I am going to need some guidance.

See this post, the part for 1.5 is towards the end.
http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=254709
Naming for Swahili language for Kenya would be:
sw-KE

The locales are not very important anymore in 1.5.3 as the date translation is taken care of by core code.
Just add there sw_KE.utf8, sw_KE.UTF-8

OK. All good so far. A couple of questions

1. In the new language set up I've named it using the info you offered. What about the 'legacy' bit?

I guessed and put 1.5.3 as that is the Joomla version I am working with. Is that right?

2. I'm ok with the words but what about this kind of material where there are only letters? I get the y-m-d bit but what about the rest?

%A, %d %B %Y
2 > %A, %d %B %Y
3 > %A, %d %B %Y %H:%M
4 > %d %B %Y
5 > %d.%m.%y
6 > y-m-d
7 > %Y-%M-%D
8 > %A, %B %e

Thanks

1. In the new language set up I've named it using the info you offered. What about the 'legacy' bit?
"legacy" ? Which precise tag?
if you talk about the xml and these tags, use

Code: Select all

<winCodePage>iso-8859-1</winCodePage>
<backwardLang>swahili</backwardLang>
They are useless anyway for swahili but better do that right
2. I'm ok with the words but what about this kind of material where there are only letters? I get the y-m-d bit but what about the rest?

%A, %d %B %Y
2 > %A, %d %B %Y
3 > %A, %d %B %Y %H:%M
4 > %d %B %Y
5 > %d.%m.%y
6 > y-m-d
7 > %Y-%M-%D
8 > %A, %B %e
Let these as they are. If you want to change after finishing the language, look at this

In the translation component it says

"Legacy Name
A Name used for compatibility with Joomla 1.0"

That's what I meant:
Legacy Name would be swahili
Windows Code Page would be iso-8559-1

hello,

Is this swahili translation still in progress? And if so, is it only for Joomla 1.5 or is a version for 1.0 in development? Thanks to all who contribute.

The translation is still in progress, but as a teacher I have found that the summer holiday has slowed things up a bit.

As suggested above the translation being worked on is for v1.5

Where are you based?

Hi mony,

That's great to hear it's still in progress. we're running 1.0.15 at the moment but intending to upgrade to 1.5 in the near future, so this is added motivation!

I'm based in Europe actually, but a client has a multi-lingual event in Africa and wants to include support for Swahili, among other languages.

Appreciate the work you're doing on the translation - we'll be eagerly looking forward to the final product!

Enjoy your summer holiday, and please keep us posted! ;)

Hi all,

What is the progress on the translation to swahili,
I can chip in if you tell me where you are, so that there is no duplication of effort.

regards,

Max.

A few of us are getting down to work on this now.

I would like to know how to

1. break up the translation files into bits
2. distribute them to be worked on offline
3. reassmble them
4. and then upload them

I have Language manager installed in a 1.5 version but don't seem to be getting on with it. When I try to create a zip file for download it says the file has been created but when I click on the link it says file not found. I have tried emailing the creator but no reply.

Please advise.

Thanks

File is made in directory on server, usualy /temp, You can check that by looking in component preferences.

Wait a minute...

what editor is it best to open the files in? They open in Notepad but are tricky to read clearly. In MS Word they disply correctly but am not convinced that they save in the correct format.

My favorite is notepad2

http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.html

Works with utf8 and is very simple.

I believe there are a lot of choices like notepad++ and so on.

If yes, please send it to me by mail and we will start from there.

VP Ndugu Zangu!
I got this Swahili IT localization translation list from kilinux archives.
It has a list of Swahili IT terms. Feel free to modify and add any translations where you see fit - it's open.

Cheers!

Anyone any news on the swahili language for Joomla? For millions of people in East-Africa this is their language. It is being used from Northern-mozambique to South-Sudan and from Mombasa in Kenia to Lubumbashi in the Congo. Can you imagine the potential if more than 60 million people could develop a CMS in their own language?
