I'm looking for a component that's designed to put together those who are willing to offer a rideshare with those who wish to carpool.

Ideally, the extension would state how many seats are available in total, count down as someone commits, sorts by a departure/destination point and date/time, and enables those who will be travelling together to share information securely - or at least privately - in other words, no emails displayed in the component itself to avoid spam.

Users should be able to publish their own trips, based on Joomla permissioning just as with weblinks or content items so that the site administrator does not have to 'set up' each person who has the ride to offer.

If there's nothing specific that is designed for this, perhaps you can think of another component that can be repurposed and tweaked to suffice?

Thanks in advance!

I know of nothing ready made for you.

I suspect that a "classified ads" extension,

See: Classifieds

could be made to work, but be prepared to do two things:

1. Alter the appearance and language of the extension to suit your tastes, and
2. Address some fundamental workings in the extension to adapt to your needs.

It MAY also be useful to install Community Builder or one of its competitors to have use of the "user profile" feature to make this all work smoother.

Added at last Minute:
It also occurs to me that SOBI2, having a marvelous interface permitting unlimited custom fields and assigning "ownership" of listings, could be made to work for you.

I hope this helps!

Good ideas, but not quite there for me.

I'm not a coder, so the idea of addressing 'the fundamental workings' isn't gonna happen. Also, because this is for a nonprofit organization just looking for a way to give is members a way to connect, there's no money in it, either. It's frustrating because "off-the-shelf" components all have some aspects that are 'close but no cigar'. SOBI won't work because it doesn't support an 'inventory' count nor allow for exchange of contact info.

Looks like I'll just have to wait it out and see what other ideas pop up here.

Thanks!

What do you mean by "Inventory Count"? and exchanging contact info is done by the user profiles.

By 'inventory count', I mean that if you have a BMW Z4 Roadster, you have only one available seat. If you have a Chevy Tahoe, you have five or more available seats. As each seat is 'booked', it deducts from how many passengers you can accommodate.

Regarding contact exchange, the component shouldn't require a user to register on the site, but rather it would maintain certain information in a table and allow the publisher (who presumably does have a registraiton and permissions) to access the information on persons who have made a booking by viewing their contact data or at least send a followup email via the site.

Hmmm, ignoring the fact that you can easily put a field in that shows how many seats a vehicle has, I have to presume that the "owner" of the vehicle, who is also the owner of the ad, is the one deciding whether or not he still has "openings", and it will not challenge most of us to say quite spontaneously whether or not we can accommodate another rider.

Hmmm, that is nonsense...

If I am a vehicle owner, I want to know that the site owner has at least verified that an "applicant" is not a spammer from another continent, and that they have an email address from which they have responded top confirm their registration.

Why would you even entertain accepting an application from a non-registered site visitor?

Are you asking these questions because you're willing to code the component, or just to sharpen your rhetorical skills? If the former, I have valid reasons for why I want it to work this way. If the latter, I don't see how giving me a hard time about what I want and how I'd like for it to work would get us anywhere.

I ask the questions as a way to get answers to what is puzzling me about your situation... In looking at my post, I was NOT careful enough about the "tone" I took, (often the case when I am trying to type quickly).

Please accept my apology for the careless response, but I often find people have not thought through how something is actually going to work on their site. Going back to an earlier post in this thread, you said this was a way to "help members connect". I assumed that meant this was for registered members.

I accept that your reasons are "valid" to you, and if I understood those reasons, I might be able to grok a solution.

Fair enough, water under the bridge. Though I'm still wondering if you're willing to code. :D

In general, experience with the community in question (many are elderly with limited PC skills) tells me that more hurdles to use would cause it to be avoided. It should be as easy as possible. And because it's a low-security application, involving the Joomla ACL may not be mandatory, but I hold it open as a possibility should there be other unforeseen needs to restrict access or enhance the value for those who do need the security.

The persons both offering and accepting rides would obviously be responsible for confirming identities on their own terms. Would you count on a ride from someone if you hadn't at least spoken with them first? The 'count' of seats is to ensure that 10 people don't request a ride in a coupe - that the open slots close down automatically rather than the driver having to manually close down the listing. Supporting ReCaptcha should address the spam issue.

Can't tell you how much trouble you're in if you're wanting MY code.

Would that this were true.

So, then this really was rhetorical?

Well, yeah, but it helps.

Absolutely not "rhetorical" One does NOT have to be a great coder to get Joomla to work... look around these forums and see.

As to reCaptcha:
You said yourself that non techies hate barriers. The newest "bots" can beat Captcha, but lots of real users CAN'T

Hi,

Haven't found anything yet which will suit my needs.
