Good day,

As we're all putting the Jo'Logo in use now, I would appreciate some comments on the following gif.
(with animated heart)

Yes, I know the name should be included, on the right, with correct spacing/font/etc, but this is just an example, it's not my purpose, to abuse the logo.
Some short allowing/disallowing mumbling sounds to the pic would do.
Just to get a rough idea, of what is allowed and not.

get it into your skulls, you don't understand what i mean at all, the name product doesn't standl well, with  joomla being a project, i suppose it it is okay like with an organisation, but say if we look at XEN, Red Hat and Novell, put it as a commercial  project. As when you click about on the homepage, it says it as a project. It seems like you applying that i don't have a clue about opensource stuff, yet still you mention that it is used by commerical companies, true. However personal sites use it. I would call Joomla, an Opensource Collaboration Project. When i said it was like a kid being and adult, it was the idea of a license or loads or rules that makes it seem over bloated rules, it takes the fun out of Joomla. It wasn't an insulting gesture, but like mambo was power in simplicity, with all of these, rules are the developers forgetting some of their basic roots.

You say like opensource have the same ideas as Linux, however distributions allow you to freely change logo's, more freedom is needed. If joomla wanted to keep these rules, at least it should put with the installatioon that you must not deform or obstruct the logo, without considertaion of senior joomla developers.

doublebeast,
Thanks for your opinions. However can we please keep the tone civil and professional. And before anyone else replies, there is no need to retaliate to the post about. Calm, well thought out replies are best.

thanks admin, for calming down the situation, as in most cases, i get really annoyed when i find things unfair. As basically i am only 14 and is one of the reasons why i have started a site where anyone can say how they want the uk to be run.

back to the subject, i would just like to ask, is the logo mandatory for all websites using joomla?  As i knew there had to be a link to mambo, on 4.5.3 but i wasn't sure about the image. So i wouldn't be too bothered about the rules, if there weren't. However say, if i do loads of hacking (programming) and branched a new cms of joomla, would i still have to keep the logo, even if there are enough hacks to make it different but is similar enough to be like joomla.

so maybe the Joomla team  could release a  TRUE GPL version of Joomla *without the proprietary logo*. Maybe release  joomla without the default favicon and using the old admin template. Because if Joomla is GPL then that must include the logo too.

1) Font is different
2) Size in relation of graphic to text is different
3) capitalization scheme is different
4) Colors are slightly different
5) Simular color order is different / color location for 3 of 4 colors is different
6) spokes are built on with different letters Lowercase "i" vs capital "J"
7) top of letters faces outward vs inward
8) One simulates being connected / woven together the other is just standing nearby
9) The circles at the end of the spokes are connected vs disconnected
10) There is one circular piece of trapped white space vs. five peices one diamong and fou semi-circles
11) direct admin has no trademark designator "tm"

First, and foremost, let me say 'thank you' to the core team and all related admins, developers, etc. You have done a wonderful job in moving forward with Joomla, and the future of the project looks bright, indeed.

That said, I am not a fan of the restrictions placed on the use of the logo. Though I understand the reasoning behind the decision, I think, the move seems counter to the open-source nature of the project (at least to me). I will, however,  follow the guidelines if I feel the need to use the logo on a site in the future.

One point, however: given that the primary stated goal of limiting use of the logo is to protect brand identity, how/why is it that OSM has chosen to feature the "New "MOJA" template set released by JoomlaShack!" on the Joomla homepage? I love these new templates from JoomlaShack, but each of the color variations features a transformed version of the new logo. They look great! (...giving rise to the thought, once again: why limit the creativity out there?) Great job, JoomlaShack!

Anyway, if logo/brand consistency is the goal of the logo-usage restrictions, why feature an announcement of non-conforming templates/images? (...though I personally think OSM/Joomla would be better served by allowing such transformations).

Addition: also featured on the Joomla homepage is "Joomla-SMF Forum 1.0.1 Is Released." Following the link from that announcement, one can see the same situation described above. And this one looks good, too!

How do the Core team or who ever is responsible expect to police the brand manual? Do you want the community to report abuses of the logo? There are already websites out there that are abusing the logo should we be reporting them or trust that you guys have it under control?

If we want to be a community it seems most logical for me to send people an email and give them the link to the information on joomla.org (http://www.joomla.org/content/view/259/70/).

We may not know about the issue, so if you see something that violates our policies, please PM manuman or myself (rhuk) with the info and we'll evaluate and contact the site/product owners if required.

Cheers.

a lil off topic.. and more on a request,.. going here: http://www.joomla.org/content/view/259/70/

i see no PSD,.. only on EPS and PNG,.  would be nice if there is a PSD format. i know its a little trim down request(just like if other might request: can you guys make a corel format too?).. but will be great to have that format--> PSD ...  :) i know also that this can easily be done by importing it to a PSD format, but for the general community do dl it,.. and im NOT asking for the raw file or a PSD with layers on it(just in case someone will get me wrong). :)

again,.. well done!

I believe that is in the guide ;)
I'm sorry, I must be blind, but I absolutely cannot find this in the guide. The typography section speaks about Helvetica and New Baskerville. The logotype is clearly neither of these. What is the typeface? Can anyone point me to the page number or just provide an answer?

It is on purpose that the font was not stated in the brand guide, as the guide clearly states that the logo can't be modified in any way.

Therefore the use of the specific font should not be necessary.

In fact it could have been a custom vector design... ;)

Nevertheless, this is where you may download it:

Thank you. While I appreciate the concern about the logo, I feel such secrecy goes a little overboard. I don't want to use the face to redo the logo, but I would find it useful for associating other projects with the CMS - like components for instance.

And you are correct, it could have been a custom vector design...

No secrecy. Just normally useless.
FYI the font is slighly transformed in the logo (it is an intermediary done with Illustrator of the Roman and Bold versions.) Therefore it is a vector based variant. ;)

We have had a (for us) very important Joomla event.
Wanted to use the logo in our official announcements (postcards).
Wrote several times to OSM to get the permission of using the logo on these postcards >> no replies!

So just for us to know: to whom we have to write of we want to use the logo on official (commercial) announcements?
What shall  we do if we are not recieving any answers within a acceptable timeframe (approx. 2 weeks after requesting)?
Is there someone responsible (and can/will answer) for questions like that?

Feel free to email me your request and I can pass it on to the legal team. The only way to contact the Joomla Core Team is via these forums.

I'm sad to see all this bickering about logo. Maybe its a natural reaction after the events with Miro that led to the formation of Joomla. I also had a Joomla Topsites and was emailed that the logo i had created was in violation of the brand usage guidelines, so i changed it.  ???

The reason I am saddened is because it seems definately too much time is being spent on legal stuff while here we are already its the year 2006 and since 2003 I and many others have been hoping for other core features which still are ' on the roadmap'

getting mucked down in the details it seems. pity.

I'm a big time Joomla fan (and user), but I have to say I feel the official stance on Joomla logo usage is throwing the baby out with the bath water:

1. Compared to the Wordpress logo page and the Drupal logo page, it makes Joomla look like the logo nazi. (that's a seinfeldism, not a holocaust reference, btw :) )
2. It puts the kibosh on fan art.
3. It makes it hard to brag about your Joomla usage with cool badges and the like. (When's the last time you saw something like this "proudly powered by" (bottom right, above "About") on a professionally designed Joomla site that wasn't selling extensions?)
4. It means that the majority of Joomla references in the wild not only feature no professional image/branding, but many are on Joomla-related sites with *ahem* less than professional graphics, making Joomla come across as being of low quality by association (much in the way links from spammy sites can hurt your search engine rankings).

And to make matters worse, it's the loyal users (the ones you want promoting you) that are most likely to comply with the conditions in the first place; malicious users are more likely to just do as they please until they get a cease and desist letter.

Please don't take this as a rant. Improving website credibility for the purpose of increasing conversion rates is part of my day job, which is why I know how it affects real user behavior. By following the pattern set by Wordpress and Drupal, Joomla stands to further increase it's creditability and user base, and help users express their pride about a platform they are passionate about.
