Feedback about Vinaora Visitors Counter

Post by Nimmzo » Mon Jul 13, 2009 10:07 pm

Thegioiphatminh, congratulations for Vinaora Visitors Counter 1.6.6!
Please find hereafter enclosed my feedback.

From basic to full featured module
On Apr 18, 2009, thegioiphatminh you wrote:Image Image
About the Vinaora Visitors Counter home page,
among the three sceenshots in vinaora.visitors.counter.joomla.hover.png,
would you provide one example with "fewer" features and
change some labels so the reader will see what could be configured.

About the configuration of the module,

Image

in the fifth image on the Joomla Extension site, you could indicate:

Code: Select all

Show 'Guest IP': 0
Show All days: 0
The reason is:
  1. It demonstrates how to avoid displaying the IP of the visitor :geek:
    even if it is already explained as tooltip of the label in the configuration of the module.
    My first attempt was to make empty the string :(
    before understanding that I should enter "0" to remove a feature. :D
  2. Some webmasters prefer to add a module that takes the minimum of height.
  3. Prefer to begin by basic features then finish by the maximum of features!
Redundant data

To visually understand that a parameter is optional,
a good idea is to show at least one parameter with as default value a setting meaning that it is optional:

Code: Select all

Show All days: 0
would be the value by default
because the Graphical Digit Counter already shows the total number of visitors.

Why take a new line to duplicate this information?
Is it because on cannot copy and paste the full number from the graphical digit counter? ;)

Configuring Vinaora Visitors Counter

Post by Nimmzo » Mon Jul 13, 2009 10:40 pm

Configuring Vinaora Visitors Counter

Even if it is simple, your Joomla module would deserve a new page dedicated for its configuration.
I found quite interesting this forum however a page in your website that helps the user to configure
will be more global than thinking to visit the forum.

Name the graphical digit counters :'(

Image

About digit_type.png, would you add the Digit counter type name such as "Two Tone"
below each graphical counter? This would help the webmasters to configure more quickly your module.

Order of parameters :eek:

Image

It is a little bit cosmetic but I would move "Initial Value" in first position of parameters.
I would add "Counter" in "Counter initial value"
because beginning by Show Today = "Today" sounds strange at first glance.

For me the basic feature of the counter is to count the total number of visitors.
The number of visitors of the day is an extra feature.

More examples of date format :geek:

The default value for Show Date/Time Now is "Now: %Y-%m-%d %H:%M"
displaying the actual date and time for example: "Now: 2009-07-13 10:40".

Would you indicate more examples of format? I would suggest the example:
Show Date/Time Now: "Today: %B %d, %Y" displaying "Today: July 13, 2009".

Typically the visitor does not need to read the time when she went to the webpage
I wrote: because in Vista, the time is always displayed in the statusbar,
but to remember the current day, one must wait for the tooltip of the clock or
show the desktop to read the calendar gadget.
A link to the PHP function strftime would be appreciated to understand the JDate format:

Unique visitor and IP log

Post by Nimmzo » Mon Jul 13, 2009 11:46 pm

Unique visitor 8)

Session Time is the most mysterious of parameters. You wrote in its tooltip:
"Session Lifetime. Default: 10 minutes. Don't set too high."

In the future configuration page, would you explain in more details this critical parameter?

Let us consider that the webmaster thinks in term of "unique visitor."
The webmaster wants to define a unique visitor on a session time --let us say-- of one day.

If the visitor refreshes the home page by F5 in IE, the counter would not be incremented.
The counter will be incremented if the same visitor (with the same IP or not)
visits the home page the next day or beyond.

Does the webmaster need to indicate as session time: 1440 (minutes = 24 hours)?
Is it compatible with your advice "Don't set too high"?

Because in your fifth image, you indicated: Session Time: 1.
What is the relationship of this parameter with the size of the MySQL database
on an archive of 70 days?
What is the criterion for the automatic deletion of old records?

Advanced Parameters and performance :geek:

Image

You could discuss about the impact in "Advanced Parameters" of:
Caching: Yes
# Days Archive: 70
"Number of days (for?) which you want to store the statistics. Default: 70 days. Don't set too high."

When you advise: "Don't set too high", the help on the configuration could explain why.

At first glance, to manage the statistics of the current month and the previous month,
31 * 2 = 62 days would be sufficient? Why a window of 70 days?

For a beginner who discovers the module, if "Yes" and "70" are the values by default,
there is no need to present this fourth image before the fifth one,
because nobody will change these difficult parameters without additional information.

At the limit, you could avoid showing these advanced parameters in an introduction.
Indicating "Support Caching" is sufficient.

Maximum of connections in a day :pop

In a future version, what about the new persistent counter: Max daily connections
that the webmaster could reset?

IP log utility already integrated :-[

A chapter for "Advanced" webmaster could present the vvisitcounter MySQL database
from the phpmyadmin perspective.

Is there a way to identify a (ro)bot from a real user through the IP address?

Optionally could you provide an online tiny tool to convert a "tm" value
that one could find in the column just before the "ip" column?

The idea is to reuse the Vinaora Visitors Counter as an IP log utility!

Version of module and link to Vinaora

Post by Nimmzo » Tue Jul 14, 2009 1:12 pm

Version of module and link to Vinaora

Image

When I recently discovered this icon, it is exactly what I wished to obtain after the configuration of the module:
  • No line separator with additional information such as the IP address,
  • No underlined Version number as indicated in all icons in the Joomla Extension page.
    The Version number appears in the third image. So one could think that one could parameter this option.
Before having found your warning in capital letters in the header of helper.php about the hyperlink in the footer,
I wished to give credit to your website but in a different manner than an underlined Version number
because some visitors are not necessary interesting in the technical details such as a version number.

As the basic feature is the Graphic Digital Counter of total number of visitors,
it is on the picture of this Graphic Digital Counter that a curious reader would wish to click to learn more about:
  • the Version number as tooltip,
  • your web page as target of the hyperlink,
in order to reuse your module in another Joomla website.

In the beginning of helper.php, I added between the C++ comment // Begin date and // End date
the PHP constant VERSION_MODULE:

Code: Select all

<?php
require_once( dirname(__FILE__) . DS . "browsers.php" );

// Begin 09/07/13: define the version as constant
define( 'VERSION_MODULE' , "1.6" );
// End 09/07/13
In the loop on the digits in "SHOW DIGIT COUNTER", I added the hyperlink to Vinaora and
concatenated the existing tooltip with the Version number:

Code: Select all

while ($div >= 1) {
        $digit = $n / $div % 10;

// Begin 09/07/13: Add the hyperlink to Vinaora on each digit
        $content .= '<a href="http://vinaora.com/joomla/vinaora-visitors-counter.html" target="_blank">';
// End 09/07/13

        $content .= '<img src="'.JURI::base().'modules/mod_vvisit_counter/images/digit_counter/'.$digit_type.'/'.$digit.'.png"';
        $content .= ' style="margin:0; border:0; "';
        $content .= ' alt="mod_vvisit_counter"';

// Begin 09/07/13: Add the version of the module on the tooltip of the digit
        // $content .= ' title="Vinaora Visitors Counter"'; // Original code
        $content .= ' title="Vinaora Visitors Counter ' . VERSION_MODULE . '"'; // Add the version
// End 09/07/13

        $content .= ' />';

// Begin 09/07/13: Close the anchor of the hyperlink to Vinaora on each digit
        $content .= '</a>';
// End 09/07/13

        $n -= $digit * $div;
        $div /= 10;
    }
When the visitor clicks to the Graphical Digital Counter, your website will be open in a new window
of the browser thanks to target="_blank" preserving the current navigation.

For international visitors, it is more relevant to directly point to the webpage of the Vinaora Visitors Counter
than your home page because:
  1. Your home page presents an interesting calligraphy but most of international visitors will close the window
    without clicking to the menu "Visitors Counter" since more than 95% of the home page is not in English.
  2. You do not use your own counter in your own home page
    but in your web page dedicated to the counter.
  3. This is your own choice for the push button Image in the Joomla Extension page.
It is why I would suggest that, in a future version of your module,
your could change the hyperlink to your home page
preferring to directly point to the dedicated web page of the Vinaora Visitors Counter! ;D

Contextual line separator

Post by Nimmzo » Thu Jul 16, 2009 2:36 pm

Contextual line separator

Helper.php could display the horizontal line separator only if additional information must be displayed:

Code: Select all

/* Begin 09/07/16: do not display the separator here
    $content .= '<hr style="width: 90%" />'; // Original code
   End 9/07/16
 */
}
// END: TABLE STATISTICS
/* -------------------------------------------------------------------------- */

/* -------------------------------------------------------------------------- */
// BEGIN: SHOW GUEST'S INFO
// Show Guest's Info
if ( $s_online || $s_ip || $s_guestinfo || $s_timenow ){
    // Begin 09/07/16: display a separator only if there is something to add.
    $content  .= '<hr style="width: 90%" />';
    // End 9/07/16

Leading zeros on option

Post by Nimmzo » Thu Jul 16, 2009 2:48 pm

Leading zeros on option

The unsignificant zeros preceding the total number of visitors are displayed by default.
However with the new option "Leading zeros": "0",
the Graphical Digital Counter could be simpler without displaying any leading zeros.

In helper.php:

Code: Select all

// Read our Parameters
// Begin 09/07/16: option "Leading zeros" = 1 by default. 0 skips unsignificant zeros
$iszero = @$params->get( 'iszero', 1 );
// End 09/07/16
Before the loop on the digits of the Graphical Digital Counter:

Code: Select all

// Begin 09/07/16: display leading zeroes on option
if ($iszero != 0)
{
// End 09/07/16

    // Begin original code
    $div = 100000;
    while ($n > $div) {
        $div *= 10;
    }
    // End original code

// Begin 09/07/16
}
else // Do not display unsignificant leading zeroes on option $iszero = 0
{
    $div = 1;
    while ($n >= $div * 10)
    {
        $div *= 10;
    }
}
// End 09/07/16

I have Vinaora Visitors Counter installed on my website and after reading this topic I now understand why the numbers of visitors differ from other counters ;D

But I still seem to have a problem with visitors 'last week' that occurs every sunday, again and again. Turns out that on sundays my visitors count of the last week is zero....... My weeks start on mondays. Can anyone explain why on sundays it seems that I had no visitors last week?

Hello,

I'm browsing all of the joomla extensions in order to find the one that is able to display simultaneously on the home page all of the IPs of the visitors currently on line at the time I go to my web.

There is a way to do that with this extension or exist another extension to do that please?

Hi, I have this Module Vinaora Visitors Counter on my website, before I used to have an average of 25,000 visitors as it shows on my Vinaora Visitors Counter right on my website front page, then my sever abroad requires me to optimize my database, which is eventually done on their side, since that optimization my statistic started to run low like an average of 8000 per day, I wonder what went wrong? can someone help me..?? :(

I really think that there something went wrong with my Vinaora Visitors Counter...

Thank you in advance :)

Problem with Module Vinaora Visitors Counter

Post by sigge » Fri Sep 25, 2009 2:13 pm

Hi

I have installed the Visitor Counter 1.7.3 on my Joomla 1.5.1

When I activate the module the following error message occurs on my website.

Fatal error: Call to undefined method JFactory::getdate() in /home/httpd/vhosts/fw-schoenenbuch.ch/httpdocs/modules/mod_vvisit_counter/mod_vvisit_counter.php on line 284

Is there something missing ? Any hints ?

Easier to configure

Post by Nimmzo » Mon Sep 28, 2009 2:59 pm

Easier to configure

Thanks Thegioiphatminh for all improvements of Vinaora Visitors Counter 1.7.3!

In the Module Parameters,

Code: Select all

Display Mode: Simple
avoids to change all "Show ..." options with "0" or "No".
The Graphical Digital Counter is directly displayed without additional information.
On July 16, 2009 I wrote: Leading zeros on option

Thanks to your new option:

Code: Select all

Min Number Digits: 1
the Graphical Digital Counter is simpler without displaying any leading zeros! :p
Of course if the counter has more than one significant digit, all those digits are displayed.

How to reset the counter?

Post by Nimmzo » Fri Oct 09, 2009 4:51 pm

How to reset the counter?
  1. In your Web browser, run phpMyAdmin.
  2. Select your Joomla database then the table jos_vvisitcounter. :geek:
    The prefix of the table could be different in your own Joomla database.
  3. Click the first tab "Browse" to see the IP addresses of your last visitors.
  4. Click "Check All" under the last item of the table "id tm ip".
  5. Click the red cross to DELETE the selected items. :-[ Confirm by "Yes".
  6. Click the 8th tab "Operations".
  7. Replace the last value of the counter in the last field auto_increment with 1.

    Code: Select all

    auto_increment 1
    Click "Go" to valid your change.
  8. You can close phpMyAdmin. :'(
  9. Visit your Joomla website. The counter will be now 1. :D

Thanks for this useful and powerful visitor counter.
I would like advice on one thing:
Your module is not full compliant with CSS 2.1 due to (I guess) an error in modules/mod_vvisit_counter/tmpl/default.php line number 47.
You should remove 'align: center' which cause an error during CSS checking (http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator).
I have done this modification on my web site (http://joel.online.free.fr) and it works fine.
