Hi Everyone,

I've seen lots of advice out there regarding the www and non-www prefix. Can someone explain any benefit or drawback to using rewrite to www. instead of a 301 redirect to www?

Thank you in advance.

Mo Random,

Search engines look at 301 redirects as special instructions. It is called a "permanent" redirect. Search engines will see the 301 in the HTTP header information and know right away that they should always consider the redirecting URL to be the same as the target URL.

Setting up a re-write rule may look the same to a visitor but not to a search engine.

Hope that helps.

OK, Thank you. I guess I knew that but wanted confirmation.

So the rewrite would allow "going back" to using the old URL if you wanted (by removing the rewrite) where as the 301 is a permanent change. And there's no particular advantage to either one.

You are correct. No advantage from a user point of view, but a significant advantage for a 301 from a SE point of view.

And you also transfer the backlink weight to the target ot the 301 redirection.

The Rewrite function can be used for using for the temporary change in the url but on the other hand the redirect can be considered as the permanent change in the url!! Thanks!
