It is likely that you are using a hacked version of Joomla 1.0.x which has a French administration custom hard coded language. This has been done by a few language communauties as 1.0.x did not provide for admin language.
If you really want to go on using Joomla 1.0.x which an English admin (which is now getting obsolete), you should FTP over your installation a full joomla 1.0.15 official pack. It will overwrite any of these hacked files and let you use English admin, without deleting your configuration.php, site French language or extensions.

As usual, make a back-up before.

Hello,

I'm new to Joomla! and I'm also having this same problem; working with a French install of Joomla! version 1.0.12 and looking for a way to reset the Administrator back to English. I would prefer to upgrade to the newest version of Joomla! but unfortunately I'm not able to make this decision myself, as I'm working with a Joomla! installation that belongs to a client.

To clarify what you're saying: I should connect to my Joomla! site via FTP and replace the entire 'administrator' folder (of course after a thorough back-up). Is this correct? Is there anything else I need to be aware of, for examples our extensions/add-ons/plug-ins typically added to the 'administrator' folder?

Thank you for any help and guidance you can provide.

Olaf,

Thank you for the response. Unfortunately I'm a bit limited in the decision making process, because (as I mentioned) the website I'm working on doesn't belong to me.

Are you suggesting this because there are security issues with versions below 1.0.15? If so, then I could probably convince my client(s) to allow the upgrade based on that information.

Yes, Joomla! 1.0.15 addresses a security issue:

Olaf,

Thank you again for the response and the link. I've read through the security update and I'm discussing the upgrade with my client(s).

Keremsah,

What doesn't work? Replacing the 'administrator' folder?
