For discussion of:

Trending Topics posted by Brad Baker:
Quote:
Even if the use of alliteration for the topic of this blog post doesn't excite you, the newly created forum: Trending Topics might. It's kind of an experiment, based on the input from others of course. Sorry if it doesn't work out, but I'm putting my reputation on the line hoping it will.

Initially only 'Trender Tenders' will be able to start new topics, but anyone who is a registered member will be able to reply to them. We hope this will maintain a little bit of order and good results will come out of this forum as a result. Give us a few days to post a sticky and generally consolidate things before we invite you all to jump in.

BTW this idea sprang from the suggestions of Jacques here, so guess who's our first 'Trender Tender' now?

Stay tuned to see how this all works out. :)

There's a lot of blog posts and announcements on the joomla.org sites, and while blog comments are one way of expressing one's views, it's also good to discuss hot (or trendy!) topics further here in the forum. (where it is better suited for debate)

Certain topics and issues raised on the various Joomla! Working Groups' Google lists also require a place where everyone can get involved with the discussion. Hopefully this will be that place!

Please jump in and share your suggestions and ideas on how this new forum section can best be used! :)

Funny name but looks like a good idea. :)

We've been doing this on Joomlapolis.com for a few years now ("discuss in news-discussions forum" link on almost all front-page articles) which made it a very good direct feedback channel, and recently removed the restriction on news-topic area starters as it wasn't really useful, unrelated threads can be moved into the right sections, and very good new threads start sometimes.

It's a good complement to the comments on the articles/blogs, which still have their different purpose. ;)

So, Yes, I like it 8)

Certainly a lot easier than trying to discuss a blog using the comments system (not that it's a bad comments system at all {cough}).

I've been poking around at some other stuff.. and one thing I think I can come up with is an RSS feed of this forum. Would people like that to better keep track of Trending Topics.. or am I getting ahead of myself?

Yes, RSS feeds would help very much 8) , as the notification emails don't work well or don't work at all sometimes/often.

Fixing the email-notifications (like it was in SMF, 1 email per new post if possible with content) is another open point that would help tremendously. Several time I was coming back to forum to discover that there were 12 replies to a thread that we waited email notifications for (and that never came). :(

Wouldn't a threaded comment based system rather than the current flat time based comments work better

The general idea is to complement the blog comments, as well have further discussions on posts or threads appearing elsewhere on Joomla (blogs, forum), and in the Working Groups' threads on Google. (where write access is limited)

I don't think anything is set in stone, so all suggestions are welcome! :)

Awesome - anything we can offer to help people get involved is a good thing. Good idea Jacques - and way-to-go Brad for making it happen!

Speaking of comments, here's some light reading that you should find useful.

Re: The RSS feeds.
It's easy for us to enable, but due to the more than 500 forum sections we have, it's a little difficult to manage.

One solution is to push a particular feed through Feedburner (my preference serverwise) but that is very tedious. I'll probably be able to add a few that way though.. to the forums mostly RSS worthy..

Know from the past that the RSS feed was the most missed feature when switching to phpBB, at least from an international perspective.

Hope that 'to the forums mostly RSS worthy' will cover the international forums, where it was chosen to use j.org as main forum resource :)

Can we please start with the Trending Topics forum (directly from phpBB for KISS, I'm sure there is a cache built-in for that ;) ) ?

Also I didn't see a way to subscribe to the this subforum new threads email.

Beat, click here: viewforum.php?f=571 under the word moderator your should see a 'Subscribe to this forum' link.

About the RSS again, while we *can* enable the feeds, I need to consider the best way to set it up. Next week, providing I have a chance I'll put it through it's paces and see how things hold up.

The FeedBurner idea is definitely one of the best options since it's simple to subscribe via any type of reader. Additionally, AdSense can be easily integrated in the feeds with it as well. Any additional rev for j.org is a bonus.

So.. how does something like this look? http://feeds.joomla.org/forumTrendingTopics

I don't want to advertise that link as yet, just in testing phase.

Just a quick reminder, that everyone is invited to PM me with a new topic for this Trending Topics section.

Whatever is dominating current conversations, or creating a buzz in and around the Joomla world.

In the meantime, please share your views on: Trends and Templates
