Hi,

I was wondering what the status of this project is? I am working on a site for my local GAA club (another freebie :( ) and I think this would make a great addition.

I could help (well not me a few lads in the club) with finishing the translations if that's required?

Thanks
Gary

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your interest in this project. It is under development, still. But as you can read in this thread, a big progress is being made at this moment.

The un-completed file are available on request: just drop a PM, and I will send you the links to the files. They are already on some production websites, like
http://www.clubscannan.ie

We will appreciate your input if needed, and you can still proofread what's already done.

Hervé

Hi all,

I was thinking about some popular extensions and their translation. I know it is a bit too early, but some of them might be easy to complete at 75% on the basis of the Joomla! core one.

Would it be good to know which are the most popular/needed for the Irish users? (the names quoted do not reflect any opinion about the quality of the extensions ;-)

Here is my list:
- Acajoom
- VirtueMart
- PhocaGallery
- CacheCleaner
- FlexHeader

Maybe this way of doing is not appropriate, or should be on another thread. Please, feel free to share your views!

Have a nice week,
Hervé

Hi,

I would definitely agree with a few of them:

- Acajoom
- PhocaGallery

Perhaps Wordpress MU also but I think that would be a much more complicated matter.

Hi Hervé,

I am very happy to see someone working on an Irish translation for Joomla. I was going to start one myself (well, getting a native-speaker friend of mine to do it) but if there is one out there already, I'd love to take a look. I'll send you a PM once I have enough posts.

Related side question...when doing translations for various components, how does one identify the name of strings to translate?

Hi,

I tried to edit the ini files in Translation Manager, when I click to save the changes I have made and it returns me to the admin home page?

I have changed the permissions of all the ini files in joomla/language/ga-IE to 777 but still that doesn't help.

Any advice?

Thanks

Hi Gary,
Well, you should not use these permissions, it is not safe: it's like "all is permit"! You should have 640/644 or 660/664. And these file should belong to the web user (apache for example) and/or the web group (apache or www-date for example).

Have you a FTP user set? It's in Global Configuration > Server > FTP settings. Make sure you have something like

Code: Select all

 Enable FTP Yes
 FTP Host 127.0.0.1
 FTP Port 21
 FTP Username xxxx
 FTP Password xxxxxxx
FTP Root (yourwebsite root, "VirtualHostName/htdocs" on Ubuntu for example)
You need this user to install properly any extension, especially about the files permissions and user/group.

If it does not help, please give more details.

Ya I was only changing the settings on those files as a test more than anything.

What details are you looking for I can send them on?

I have those FTP details in all right.

Just wondering if anyone else had this problem.

Thanks

You should "give useful details to receive useful help":
- Joomla! version
- extensions' version
- host, server details
etc....

or you should use de JTS-Post Assistant:
http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=428&t=272481

And you may not have help from this forum because it is probably not followed by the people you need: you should post to a more appropriate forum, like the Translation manager one.

FYI, we generally use the Translation Manager locally and make all language folders and files writable for this specific task.

Hi Hervé!

Thank you very much for the translation. I got the third file, but the first two were chopped off at the URL.

I am going to give it a try on our site and see how it works. I have a native Irish speaker (one of those rare ones who actually learned English in school and grew up speaking Irish) on the team who can evaluate it. I noticed that a number of strings are not translated. Can we help in this effort? Perhaps give back somehow?

Thanks!

Hi Sam,
Sorry about the truncated URL. I probably went too fast in the copy and paste from the PM editor. You should have a new PM with the correct links now.

Thanks for your help, both of you, we really appreciate it! Any kind of feedback is more than welcome! The translation is about to be done by a company, and we do not have access to this work in the meantime. So we prefer to avoid duplicate work at the moment. But there is still some work to do, on some popular extensions, like JoomFish for example ;)
We will be glad to have you on the team. Here is some good reading to start about Irish translation efforts with Joomla!
http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p ... 2#p1966482

and in general in the sticky notes at the top of the Translation forum
http://forum.joomla.org/viewforum.php?f=11

And of course, the work already done will not suffer some proofreading.
If you can let us know what you want to do or what you have already started, we can coordinate efforts and, again, avoid duplicate work.

Hi all,
A quick update about progress on the Joomla translation. Unfortunately, some delays happened, we still have to wait. But good news, we may have a couple of popular extensions, or more, included with the translation!
If you know some native Irish speakers, we would really appreciate new input on some extensions. Please, spread the word!

Hi there - can you tell me how far off the translation work is from completion? We might be able to help as we're looking to use Joomla as Gaeilge and have a small budget for translation. Perhaps we could send the remaining files out for translation or proofing?

Hello Gary, I'm also interested in getting hold of the language pack and might be able to offer some indirect help on the translation side. I've just joined this forum so must post 5 times prior to being allowed to PM you ... is there any chance of getting hold of the language pack files in the mean time?

Hi queenmaeve,
Thanks for the offer. Like mention before, the work is being done by a private company already. And you probably want to use some extensions, that may be a good idea then to translate them as well. Let me know some details by email.
Do not worry about the ability to send PM, I am following this thread, so i send you a PM for the (incomplete) languages files.

Hey rvbgnu,

I may be able to introduce you to a fluent Irish speaker. I am currently working on his bi-lingual site. Could you give me an idea of the role he would play as part of the team? He is non-technical however Irish is his first language.
M
p.s. I am assuming that I cannot pass on the files you sent me in the PM to other parties - is this correct?

Hi Mary,
Thanks for the offer. We would really appreciate if a native speaker could join the team.

Basically his role will be to translate a few strings and proof read some other ones. Depending on his spare time available, we have these priorities:
1. translation of the new strings introduced on each releases of Joomla! (starting from the complete translation when it's available)
2. translation of some popular extensions, that will be selected by the community, and of the new strings for the coming versions
3. proof-reading inputs from other team members.

He will not have to deal with the technical part of the language files, and should have to use, for example, the translation manager interface (more user friendly). We know that the bigger part is being done (completion of the full translation), then as a team, we will share the "maintenance" work to keep the translation updated. So it should not be a big workload.

Let me know if he wants some samples and more details, and we can make live contact as well: I understand that my explanation might be unclear for a novice.

Thanks again for giving back to the community, that's what makes Joomla! better, a good community spirit!

PS: you can pass on the files to other parties, under its license, and with the same recommendation: The Translation policy advise not to release publicly some incomplete files, to avoid confusion and disappointment in the "non-community member" public, but they are available on request through the forum. Once completed and maintained, they could integrate the JoomlaCode and be available as a language pack.

Hey rvbgnu,
Sounds good - I'll have a word with L and see if he he's up for it. (This is my third post ... you'll have to ask me two more question so I can get to the famous five posts!)
p.s. the translation files are great - thank you so much. Still a way off from publishing the site but I'll let you know when I do.

Hi all,
A quick update, because I am very busy with houseworks and a bit of "official" work.
A few of you offered their help, and some did get back to me about it. Hopefully, I will soon take some time to speak with some of you and organise some things to move forward.

I will post here any update, as usual.

Hey rvbgnu,

It seems that L can't help but D can - D is a native speaker too. He asked would it be possible for you to send one "module" of work to give him some idea of what is expected. Then, depending on how that goes he'll have a better idea of the both the work load/type and commitment expected.

Dear all,
Just a confirmation of what was stated before, the translation is on its way, but we cannot provide any time-frame at that stage. It has been delayed a few times, but it will come eventually. We do believe ;)

In the meantime, I have updated the language files to the latest Joomla! 1.5.18. For those who requested and received the link, it is the same. For files consistency, the last updated files will stay in the same first location, so the links I used in many emails or PM before are still good.

The differences between 1.5.15 and 1.5.18 versions are:
- admin/ga-IE.ini and site/ga-IE.ini: addition of 2 cities; translation of a few cities with focal.ie
- all files: update on the copyright date (2005-2010 instead of 2005-2009)
- ga-IE.xml: version number updated to 1.5.18

Hope to find more time to set-up a framework and organise some volunteer work.
All the Best,
Best Regards, Hervé Boinnard

I'm a total Joomla novice but have worked in IT for about 20 years so hope I will pick it up.

I've taken over my son's primary school website (Google sites) but as it is a Gaelscoil we want to do a bilingual site and frankly Google Sites just has too many limitations.

So, I'm looking at Joomla, and it seems great, then I heard about Joom fish, sounding better, then I hit a snag, no Joomla Langauge extension for Irish. From what I've read above it sounds like it's still possible, but I'd appreciate any pointers form those that have been down this road ahead of me.

Should I proceed and if so what extensions do I need?
