Re: What extension did you use to make Joomla community?
Please note that it is NOT the version of JomSocial that you can currently purchase but a future yet to be released version. Dont know what the differences are (other than the switch to the GPL licence) just dont want you to make a decision based on the people site as it may not be what you can purchase today.

If you do purchase Jomsocial or have a current purchase/subscription at this time, you do get access to the same version that is being used on people.joomla.org - it may not contain all of the customizations that were done specifically for people.joomla.org.

But you CAN have the version of JomSocial that is used on people.joomla.org today if you purchase it. They absolutely can make a decision based on the people.joomla.org because that version is available to use. Anyone who has a current subscription or purchase of Jomsocial actually can download the same version used on people.joomla.org and use it today if they so wish to. They can also hire developers to customize their very own version to their heart's content.

Re: What extension did you use to make Joomla community?
I apologise then. My understanding was that the version used on people was an unreleased future version of jomsocial and NOT the currently available version which is not GPL.
So are you saying that joomla.org is using non-gpl licenced software??

Brian, you could simply had edited your first reply (and this one: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p ... 9#p2143829) in this thread to calm down the drama you were deliberately trying to inject. .. or not replied at all.
So, what do you want to do then, Brian and Jenny.. remove all your posts in this thread, or still leave them up and continue debating a subject that really, is one people should be talking to Jomsocial about, not us?

No Brian, I am not playing games. Let's sort this thread out, then I will answer any question you have, or direct you to someone who can. Please respond to my post: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?p ... 7#p2143867 and then we can clean up this thread and close it.
EDIT:
BTW if you want to leave all your posts up, I can cope with that, I just want to close this thread asap before it turn into more mess.

I'll try to help here...
I see two main choices, 1. Remove all posts and leave Sandra's correct first reply or 2. Lock this thread and let onlookers decide for themselves about who is right on this issue (apart from Sandra's clearly 100% correct reply).

Re: What extension did you use to make Joomla community?
Hey Brad, your links just come right back to the same post not a different one. But I think we can get this post back on topic. People.joomla.org is using Jomsocial. Acording to the Jomsocial developer "Like the new features in http://people.joomla.org ? Download JomSocial 1.7.10 Beta http://[no tiny url]/duWDQO (active subscribers only)" (this was posted on twitter today by the developer twitter.com/jomsocial.
Hope that clears up any confusion.

Re: What extension did you use to make Joomla community?
Hello.
Looks like there is some history being played out in this thread but I wanted to come in and support Brian's replies. This morning I received an amail from Jomsocial letting me know that I could download the Beta which was now in the public domain. After trying to download I discovered that I needed to purchase a license, a detail not made obvious in the promotion I hasten to add. So now it feels like peoplejoomla! is just an advertisment for Jomsocial so I think Brian is right to ask for clarity because something doesn't smell right about the whole thing.
Hope I don't disrupt the peacekeeping but to me Brian asks a valid question and seems to be getting dealt with heavily.
William

Jomsocial is a paid product. You will need to pay to download it, even if it's the same GPL version we use on people.joomla.org

Re: What extension did you use to make Joomla community?
Hello Brad
Yes, I understand that and of course that making the beta available to people who have purchased their products is great news for those people and nice of Jomsocial. But they will be making more sales on the back of extra publicity and promotion and should Joomla! really be a vehicle for one company to generate sales? Now if the refreshed site was using k2 and that led to more people using k2 then that would be a lot less murky as its free and useful too. So the main issue is the relationship between Joomla! and Jomsocial, it's murky to us neewbies and somewhat blemishes the ethos of open source sharing. And to see how someone asking what seems a sensible question gets treated further impacts negatively, for me on the topic.

Re: What extension did you use to make Joomla community?
Again I am going to ask that people stop spreading misinformation. There has been no lack of clarity. It is well known that Jomsocial is a paid product. It is like many paid for extensions that you have to pay for them to download them. All sorts of extensions go into the Joomla! family of sites both paid for and free.
Brian mistakenly advised someone that they cannot judge Jomsocial by how people.joomla.org works, and that the version that is running people.joomla.org is not currently available for subscribers to download. He tried to spread the misinformation that I was stating that people.joomla.org was not using gpl software. I did not state that. I was not saying that. And besides it is a totally false statement for him to imply that.
While my comment stating that would continue to spread misinformation may have been stated harshly, which is why I removed it. I stand by my statement that he is intentionally spreading misinformation in an attempt to tear at the fabric of the community, and he has done so in numerous threads since the people.joomla.org site has opened.
Let's get back to it being about the community. And I will take my own advice and simply report hostile, min-informative posts that are strictly meant with ill will and in mean spirit. I should have done that to begin with, and I am sorry for not following the protocol of the forum by not reporting the post, and instead reacting.

Re: What extension did you use to make Joomla community?
Have you seen what product we use on: http://extensions.joomla.org/ yet? What about the components on http://community.joomla.org ?
Why do you feel paid GPL blemished the ethos of open source sharing? Is there a question you think that Brian asked that we have not addressed in this thread or elsewhere on our sites?

Re: What extension did you use to make Joomla community?
Its not paid GPL that is the problem it is focusing on one extension provider in particular that is.
Of course I have seen the extensions directory.
If I ask the question- Why use Jomsocial? Then I can second guess the responses would be -'ease of use' etc
Why not Joomunity or CB?
I guess Jomsocial meets the required needs of Joomla! team and they have bought a license the same way that we all do when a product meets our needs.
But did they buy a license for it?

Jenny, Brian mistakenly thought the version on people.joomla.org was an unreleased version and appologized as soon as you point out that it was not. How does asking a question consitute "mis-information"? Especially when the version of JomSocial currently available is NOT GPL...not because it's paid but because this: http://www.jomsocial.com/company/license-agreement.html is the licensce.
Brad, who said or even implied that "paid GPL blemishes the ethos of open source sharing"? Nobody in this thread, from what I read.

Re: What extension did you use to make Joomla community?
So Brad I wonder still if you can put my mind at ease.
Did the Joomla! team purchase a license and pay for the development or did they pay for the license and undertake self development or did Jomsocial do all the work and gift the license?
I really would like to know this in light of Jomsocials promotions based on the fact that Joomla! now uses their product. In the future should I expect promotions from other commercial developers on the basis that Joomla! use their products?
Thanks
