I just ran a quick test of the beta, and it was a very pleasing experience. The new features are great improvements, making the system even more versatile and useful for almost every kind of sites. And even with all these improvements, it's very familiar. I really look forward to the stable, and the switch to new and better Joomla! Thumbs up guys! Excellent work really!

Hi Redrings.

Our tradition is that there is a path to upgrade between betas but it will not be automated. Database diff's are generally provided if required (I don't expect any but you never know) and upgrading files should be a matter of overwriting the old ones. I doubt we'll provide file diff's during the beta period.

I have to say though, that I'm disappointed fro not seeing a built-in tagging system in it just as the case with wordpress.

By the way, I have some questions:
1- When 1.6 is alpha, is a migrator need to move from 1.5 to 1.6, or just the usual patch?
2- Any changes in character encoding? (hopefully not)
3- Should I expect that extensions working with 1.5 will work with 1.6, or do I have to wait for developers to have new releases?

I can easily say I was surprised (and excited) to hear the beta came out. My buddy emailed me with the news and I was like, really? wow...so, time to play with this thing and try a site out with it.

Most developers will wait with the development of 1.6 extensions untill the final database structure & API are known.
That's with the release of Joomla 1.6 Beta so I'd expect that developers will now start with the development of 1.6 extensions...

Hi Pe7er...hopefully they will only do the updates to my favorite ones...haha...but realistically, I am hoping most don't wait too long to take advantage of the new 1.6 (which for some reason I keep calling it 2.0...don't ask me why, I'm not sure). Anyway, I'm starting a new site concept which will focus more on templates for 1.6 so I plan on using the beta for the live site. And yes, I know a person should not use betas on a live production site, but thought, hey, might as well jump right in and use it as a basis for the site concept. Still, very excited with this.

No.

Maybe, however that is something the template and extension developers would be best to answer. Now that 1.5 is beta, I am sure you'll see a number of them getting to work on that.

There are number of changes developers will need to make to various extensions but none of them are particularly onerous. There is a long (but still incomplete) list of changes in 1.6 that can be found in this thread:

The end result is developers will likely have to make separate 1.5 and 1.6 versions of their extensions, and no 1.5 native extension will be able to install on 1.6 without slight modifications.

Developers *should* start preparing their 1.6 versions of extensions now. 1.6 is feature frozen and unless there is a particular problem, the database schema won't change.

3. Can you migrate your joomla 1.5 site to this version?

The plan is, yes, to migrate from 1.5 to 1.6 via "some process". We've been waiting for features to freeze before heading into this territory. Unfortunately I can't give you any more information than that at this time.

I know the 1.6 beta is not for production purposes, however, I am trying to do the necessary testing. I took one of my 1.5 templates and changed the xml file to 1.6. When I install it the template does not show up in the template manager anywhere. Even when I duplicated one of the default Joomla templates that came with the 1.6 beta and uploaded it, it still did not show up in the template manager. Am I missing something? How are we supposed to test out the new beta? Is there a way to install/test other templates that didn't come with the installation. If so, please advise. Thanks in adanvace.

I was Just giving the beta a try i have a question?
I am Using IIS 7.5 and with the Search Engine Friendly URLs On the links do not work. All the links go to a page like this

All I see "Use Apache mod_rewrite" IIS has a rewrite mod but this does not seam to work with IIS. is there a way to get Search Engine Friendly URLs to work with IIS ?

if you have Search Engine Friendly URLs off and Use Apache mod_rewrite off links work correctly.

I found few problems:

ACL Problem: i try to deny access to delete/edit for manager but after save, admin and superadmin also are denied to delete/edit. Doesn't work even i set allow for both admin/superadmin. It's look like instead of send access rights to lower level, send it to higher level of access.

What to do: go to an article, set Manager rigts in Delete tab to Deny then press Save. Try also for admin. Work fine for publisher or Shop Supplier.

"Reset to inherit" and "Back to group": what options should do because i'm still on same page and still have custom access set to groups.

New article: publish start date show : 0000-00-00 00:00:00, should'n take current date?

Could you do a test with Joomla 1.5 at the same server? I suppose that you will run into the same error.
Your problem seems IIS related because mod_rewrite is not possible at IIS (only at Apache webserver).

Got a few Questions as i tested the Beta a few Minutes:

Media Manager - Couldn`t find it. Has it been removed completly, or only for the Beta??
Version Control - I thought that one part of J 1.6 is the Version Control of Content, will that be added in the Future?

This is pretty much it, there are a few other things, which cought my eye, but i believe there are mostly a beta Symptome. Look & Feel of creating new Modules, etc. This has been better in J 1.5.

It's been moved under the "Content" menu.

No, that was never on the radar for 1.6. Having said that, some new plugin events should make it possible to build a fairly robust solution on top of 1.6.

Issues are logged/reporting on the 1.6 issue tracker, and it can be found here:

You will need to have a JoomlaCode user account to be able to post them there. That is the point of truth that the Joomla Bug Squad uses to track and solve issues in the source code, features and so on. Make sure you include all the metrics of the system you are testing on (PHP, MySQL, browser versions, etc).

Associated with that is the Joomla Bug Squad mailing list. This can be joined here:

http://groups.google.com/group/joomlabugsquad

If you want to discuss any issue (possibly find out if it is a bug, or see what people think about tuning any of the new features, etc), that's the place to do it. Just note, that during beta we won't be talking requests for new features.

Finally, there is a public chat available using IRC and this can be found at irc://irc.freenode.net#joomla-bugsquad This is a great place to hang around and pick up the ropes.

There will be more information coming out soon on the JBS and some initiatives we'll be taking to help people slot into where they can or want to help most. It's certainly the most exciting and possibly most challenging (in a good, fulfilling way) place to be in the project at the moment

I don't mind getting my hands dirty as long as there is some sort of path to take. I'm itching to get things going on 1.6 so I think I'll go for it after all. I'm excited about taking advantage of the nested categories and ACL - both are areas where we've struggled with making Joomla work for our needs in the past. Once some sort of versioning is built in (1.7?) this will be perfect for us.
