Two observations about the way "People" complicates the .joomla.org sites:

1) The people portal has a lot of JUG groups and an event calendar system often used by JUGs, but these functions are already in use at the community.joomla.org site.

2) The "People" site is referenced on the Joomla.org home page with only one tiny microlink at the bottom, and it does not appear in the main nav menu on xxxx.joomla.org pages. (Additionally, the link trees at the bottom of the main front page are also out of sync with the actual main nav menu at the top and the secondary pages. "Get involved" appears twice as well, and the content of that page might be updated to include new things like the People portal.)

concerning number 1.
i am trying to bridge the gap and smooth over some of these confusions.
here is my personal non-official view.

people come along and create a JUG group page. they then stick it in the registered category. later someone like me comes along and says your "JUG Anytown" is both mistitled and mis categorised as its not a "registered with OSM" group, user then complains bitterly that there group is now called "Anytown Users" and moved to the Regional User Groups.
A proper registered with OSM JUG may mistakenly put themselves in the Regional User Group and not have any issues as they are called a JUG Sometown and they are registered. (but we may move them to the "Registered" section. (confused yet?)
You then get people complaining that they have created a JUG but is not on the community.joomla page (as they didnt register with OSM and why should they!)
So back to my personal side.. it creates extra work and is probably one of those things that when people joomla.org goes out of Beta should be blocked.
you will also get abandoned places like the meetup sites and linkedin sites

Argh, an administrator's nightmare. It would make sense if all JUGs that want to use people.joomla.org agree to use it as their primary web space for networking, dialogue, and event listings. Others could just link to their own alternative sites if they want to use something else. (But I doubt jomsocial is as robust as google calendar.)

There must be some kind of compromise between efficiency through consolidation/centralization and freedom through autonomy.

I just got the jomsocial newsletter about 1.8 and their event handling, which is demoed on the Joomla People portal. That is pretty nice on a closer look, except groups seem unable to own events, so you can't look at just one group's events. Most importantly, the iCal export seems to be available per individual event only. A full feed of events could be fed into Google calendar automatically, or Pipes and Feedburner. Events are information that should be pushed to people and easy to distribute...
