Should I proceed and if so what extensions do I need?
Hi Esthalon,

I am glad you find this thread!

To set up a bi-lingual website, once you have install Joomla, here are some general instructions.

If you have a test/development version of your web site (you really should have one ;-) , you can try on it first. Always backup a production/live website before installing an extension!
http://docs.joomla.org/Beginners#Creati ... stallation

1/ Download the Irish language files, un-finished:
You will receive the files through a Private Message.
Please read the forum if you need some help. Or post your question here, and not through Private Message, so that your problem can help everyone.

The files are for Joomla! v1.5.18, but they should work with any 1.5.x version too (if there are some missing strings, they will not be displayed, and the English original will, that's all). And if you use non-native extension, nothing should change.

The Translation policy advise not to release publicly some incomplete files, to avoid confusion and disappointment in the "non-community member" public, that's why they are available on request through this forum.

2/ Use the Joomla! installer with the zip files, in your site back-end > Extensions (menu) > Install/Uninstall

3/ The extension used to switch the language in the front-end is JoomFish. It's help to manage translation of the content, and of some components and extensions too.
http://www.joomfish.net/

4/ Then you should configure JoomFish to use a default language, and you are ready to translate your content! Do not forget menus, footer and other contents. The good news is an improved documentation now:
http://www.joomfish.net/en/documentatio ... stallation

5/ Keep in mind that if your translated part is not perfectly the same than the original one, you might need some adjustments, in menus for example. But this can be done with the free version of JoomFish, still:
http://www.joomfish.net/en/documentatio ... e-joomfish

Another language is like another dimension to your website. Almost everything is available on forum and blogs, and I have read them for hours and days! But nothing compare to experience.

So I hope everything will be fine for your website.

By the way, you are welcome to help the small team to translate some popular extensions and/or proof-read what's have been translated so far. Everything is posted here if you are interested.

Hi Hervé, I have been reading the posts on this thread and would really like the latest copy of the translation files. I might also be able to contribute to the completion and any extensions that I will use on the site.
Thanks,
Hannes

Hi Hannes,
You should have a PM with the files now.
Thank you for your offer to contribute. What kind of help may you provide? Can I ask you if you are a native speaker, or if you are fluent in Irish? The team would really appreciate your help, some extensions are on the way already.

The text to translate comes in form of spreadsheet, which is convenient to filter, edit, copy and paste on a larger sheet. It is then process to generate the system's files. We would like to have a more convenient and user friendly tool, with a collaborative work feature, but it seems that there is no such system or web application known from the Joomla community at the moment. Still, working with a spreadsheet is efficient enough.

I am delighted to read that you are happy with the files, and about the progress with your website! All the team is probably happy too, always a pleasure to see a community alive! Please share the link when it is done. And maybe submit it to the Joomla Showcase

Hi Hervé,
Thanks for the files, I tried them out and all is working great. I am not a native speaker but there are people involved in the site that would be and are willing to translate some files.
Currently Community Builder, kunena and DTRegister are the main components the site will use. Community Builder does not use Joomfish for translation but has its own language files so we will be translating them also.
If you send on your spreadsheet we can have a look at it and find out what the guys can translate.

Regarding the CB language files, they are PHP files not INI and use the format below.
DEFINE('_UE_WELCOME_DESC','Welcome to the user section of our site.');
Would your spreadsheet be able to generate output like that to make it easy for non technical people to translate.

Thanks,
Hannes

Hi Hannes,
Thank you for your feedback. And thank the people who are willing to translate a part for us. The core Joomla files are on the process to be translated, so there is no need to duplicate work at the moment. Anyway I send you the spreadsheet so they can have a look. Then it is all about using formulas, with Free Software like OpenOffice.org.

Regarding the 3 extensions you mentioned, I am not aware of anyone working on an Irish translation for them at the moment or in the past. So that will be great to add them. And I think it is better to have the language files translated and share them with the community, rather than using JoomFish. I really like JFish, but more to manage the content translation.

Finally, the Community Builder language files format was the one used by Joomla in 1.0. We can handle it through a spreadsheet, and generate the right format back. John did a great work with this up to now. Will it be suitable for you and the people involved in your website?

Hi all,
Someone may help us with some missing translation for Joomla.
There is no translation for the short word for 2 months, Sep and Oct in Irish:

Aug: Lún
August: Lúnasa
Sep: xxx
September: Meán Fómhair
Oct: xxx
October: Deireadh Fómhair
Nov: Anois
November: Mí na Samhna

Any idea?

Dear all,

Thanks to Andrew and Liam, I have updated the language files with some strings translated. For those who requested and received the links, they are the same. For files consistency, the last updated files will stay in the same first location, so the links I used in many emails or PM before are still good.

The changes are:
- Admin: ga-IE_users.ini (NOTICE=Fógra)
- Admin: ga-IE.ini (SEPTEMBER_SHORT=MF, OCTOBER_SHORT=DF)
- Language: ga-IE_com_contact.ini (MOBILE=Uibhir Fón Póca)
- Language: ga-IE_com_search.ini (SEARCH_RESULT=Torthaí)
- Language: ga-IE.ini (SEPTEMBER_SHORT=MF, OCTOBER_SHORT=DF, NOTICE=Fógra)

Enjoy!

Dia Dhúit Gach Duine!

I was actually in the process of manually using the "old" Joomla 1.0 and copy/paste to an existing GB lang pack for 1.5 when I came across this thread.

Is it possible to get a hold of the 1.5 Translation Pack "As Gaeilge"? My Irish is middling but am willing to help out if I can - My brother has to do a site for college and I know a bit about Joomla - except it needs to be bilingual...

Any help greatly apreciated

Hi,

I have updated the language packages: add in install.xml header method="upgrade" to allow language upgrade, or an error will occur if language already installed. And the files structure has been check as well.
Sorry for those who had trouble to update there language (well, nobody reports a trouble yet 8)

Then, again, if you have the files links from a PM or email, they are still working, with the new files at the same location.

On the full translation front, it seems that things have stalled, unfortunately. There is more delay to complete projects with this famous recession period for almost everybody, anyway.

Call for volunteers:
We have a number of extensions who will love to be translated. If you able to help, please contact the team in this forum or PM/Email me (see buttons below).
For the few people who offered there help already with JEvents, could you contact me about progress?

Hervé,

I just wanted to say thanks a million again. My site is now live and I tired to post a link as I promised above so you could see, but apparently that counts as self promotion (even though it's a school site that I'm doing for free) so my post was deleted. :'(

But the translations rocked, I wouldn't have been able to do it without them and if you ever need someone to test any new releases or anything just give me a shout.

June.

June,
We are glad to read that. And it is a pleasure and rewarding to have a sincere "thank you" like yours. Unfortunately this is not happening every time for a volunteer work :o

You should post again your school website URL. Forum moderation is not an easy and grateful task, but it is needed to keep the discussions clean and pleasant to follow. I am sure that if you just post your http address in clear (no html code or hidden link) stating that it was made with the help of the Irish language files provided here from the Team, it should not be a problem. Or I missed a forum rule, maybe.

Anyway, good luck with the website, and fair play to you for doing this volunteer job. Schools definitely need some help on the IT side, and we, parents, are better doing it ourselves!

We will contact you for future versions, for sure.
