I've included two images to show the problem I'm having with my site:

http://kingshipofeast.com/wrong.png
http://kingshipofeast.com/right.png

Sometimes not all the modules, or even the non-module front page news content, appears. But if and when I have this problem, a simple reload or clicking "Home" will make the issue go away. Regardless, it is still a huge annoyance to know that some visitors will be unknowingly missing out on a lot of front page content.

It only happens on some visits to the site and not just by me. It also happens in both Firefox and Chrome and makes no difference if I (or anyone) is logged in or out.

I'm running several extensions on my site:

K2
JFusion
JEvents

Of the modules that disappear from the front page there seems to be no single extension's modules being the sole problem. The disappearing modules are from varying extensions (JFusion, WoWRealmStatus) or built in (RSS Feeds). In the case of JFusion's modules, some of them disappear (latest forum topics) and others always stay (user menu and whos online).

I'm at a loss here. Any ideas?

[Edit: Consolidated info into OP]

Joomla caching is disabled.

Browser side caching wouldn't make much sense considering that when I 'exit' the site, I leave it after I've done the refresh.

It feels like something is being interupted somewhere that prevents the site from querying everything but I'm not sure how I would even go about looking into that.

I've now gone through each module that displays on the front page and disabled them one by one and still get the same result. I even changed the home page to a different menu link type.

It sounds like a caching issue to me

Would you be able to provide more insight on how this may be a caching issue?

As I said previously, Joomla's system caching is disabled. It happens across three browsers and with other (but not all) people aside from me.

Caching still doesn't make sense as the issue to me here because the 'incorrect' state of the front page is NEVER defined anywhere. It's configured to have more modules than it shows and it's supposed to show an article. It couldn't be caching the page in this state because this state is never in existence.

I've now upgraded to 1.5.20 just to see if it possibly helped at all. Still no change. I'm running out of ideas to try. :P

It might also be worth noting that the same modules show/don't show consistently every time. The 'User Menu', 'Who's Online', and 'Admin' menu always remain even on the 'incorrect' display.

Not sure if this matters but I just realized (duh) that the three modules that always appear regardless if the front page is messing up are modules that have been set to appear on ALL pages. And of course, all the ones that disappear are set to only show on the home page.

Again I'm not sure if that is relevant to the problem but I thought it was worth noting.

I am having the same problem. I also have caching turned off and I am using J1.5.20

Everything was alright until 12 hours ago and then the modules publsihed to the front page only disappeared. If I select them to show on all pages they show on all pages.

Have also deleted and recreated home page link.

I am hosted on VPS server through Hostgator. Wonder if it something to do with that? Or perhaps a database issue. I see different collations in the database.

Any help appreciated.

Having exactly the same problem... seems to have just started within the last day or 2 after upgrading to 1.5.20 but it may have been happening before.

i can also confirm the ONLY modules that show up are assigned to ALL pages.

Check this out ... Just noticed this query in the debug output.

SELECT id, title, module, position, content, showtitle, control, params
FROM jos_modules AS m
LEFT JOIN jos_modules_menu AS mm
ON mm.moduleid = m.id
WHERE m.published = 1
AND m.access <= 0
AND m.client_id = 0
AND ( mm.menuid = 0 OR mm.menuid = 0 )
ORDER BY position, ordering

... namely the AND ( mm.menuid = 0 OR mm.menuid = 0 ) part
That has to be messed up.

Turning on the "System - Cache" plugin in the plugin manager seems to have semi-fixed the problem. I say semi-fixed because it's a workaround that isn't really fixing the issue. But at least, for the time being, new visitors are not being shown a broken front page.

I'm still in search of a true solution though.

Try comparing that to the debug results of a correct display of your front page.

[Edit] I've also tried disabling any and all forms of GZipping css/scripts plugins/options that I could find with no change.

well... I figured out my problem. I was using a non-standard menu module and it was not including the Itemid getvariable in the url... which is what the modules use to detect what pages they are displayed on.

Tyler I would check and make sure you have &Itemid=## at the end of your (non sef) urls
## = the menuitem id for the page your currently on.

Also I just realized that using sef url's may or may not affect this as well... are you using SEF url's?

I'm using 'Search Engine Friendly URLs' and 'Apache mod_rewrite'. Should I also use 'Add suffix to URLs' I wonder?

As for the menu; I'm using the RokNavuMenu that is built into the Gantry-based template I'm using from Rockettheme.com. There is no menu module created in the Module Manager. All the menu options are configured from within the template's config panel.

I doubt the suffix will make a difference ...

But try turning off sef urls and see if that Itemid variable is at the end of all url's in the menu... I bet it's not.

In which case you'll likely want to get an updated version of your template or at least contact roket for support.

I think it all has something to do with the new version of joomla, but I don't really know what they might have changed to cause all this.

I was having this problem prior to 1.5.20 as well but I will give the non SEF URLs a try.

Turning off all the SEO/SEF options did not have any effect. If the itemid problem were the issue I was having too it wouldn't make sense for all those modules to come back after reloading or revisiting the page.

So far it only seems to happen upon the first visit to the website after opening the browser.

Well I gave up frustrated in the end. Because my site had not been launched to the public I deleted everything and reinstalled from a backup. Problem has gone now (fingers crossed).

I tried all of the sef options, cache options, menu options and they did not solve anything.

Would an upgrade on the server (PHP, MYSQL) cause this type of issue? It did happen very suddenly when everything was working fine and BANG the problem appeared.

I will be interested to see if someone comes along with an answer.

Regards
Mike

That does sound like a caching thing? But you checked all of that like I did. I am not an expert at servers or hosting but would it be possible fora server to cache content?

I did originally think it had something to do with database collation conflicts as I see a two different collations in mine where I was under the impression that there should only be one.

I also checked CHMOD of files but there didn't seem to be a problem there. Although I reinstalled the whole site I hate a mystery and would really like to know the answer.

Regards
Mike

Well the enabling "System - Cache" plugin workaround is no longer useful as it causes users to be logged out everytime they come visit the website AND it causes the "Invalid Token" error everytime they login.

While trying to find a fix for the Invalid Token issue I came across this extensions: http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions ... ripts/7230 - which seems to have at least allowed the content of the home page to show up fully but the modules still don't show up.

Are you using Jomsocial on your site? If so I wonder whether some of those scripts might have been interferring with the site?

I am not. I am running JFusion, which deals with logging in users, and it is configured correctly.

I think I have finally fixed it. I think...

I don't know what made me try this but I went into the K2 settings and set the "Enable K2 User Profile" to "No". I'm going to continue testing with different browsers/machines to make sure but I think my issue might be cleared up.

If this does turn out to be the fix, I can't make sense of it.

[EDIT] - Well it seems that the problem has just flip-flopped now. Guests will always see the full front page. Logged in users will only see the article content and none of the non-global modules.

lol... progress?

Great news. Was it the K2 users settings being turned off that helped?

Yes that seems to have made a difference but like I said before, logged in users are now the ones having the issue. Front page only modules are gone, the article content is there though.

And now it's back to it's same old, broken, self.

I'm really at a loss now. I get the feeling that it's K2 for some reason but I can't disable it or get rid of it because the whole site's content is built using K2.

I can't wait for 1.6 then I can drop K2.

[Edit] - I went and cleared the Joomla cache under tools and it fixed it back to the semi-fixed state again. Sigh...

I have problem with selective displaying module on home page(s) too. My problem is different from you though: my problem is related to wrong modules on home page of different languages.

Anyway, I "feel" that my problem (and possibly yours) is related to this: when a visitor first comes, the visitor may specify "www.nameofsite.com". This would make the browser load "http://www.nameofsite.com/". This makes URL / menu based module selection criteria mechanism fail (in my case at least...).

I tried the extension "MetaMod", which offers very comprehensive module selection possibilities. It seems that it can address my needs. You may like to take a look at that and see if it can also solve your problem. Good luck!

I am having this issue, as well. This started about 2 months ago for me, sometime in July, I think.

The front page will load correctly most of the time, but about a quarter of the time, only the frontpage articles will load and not any of the modules.

I am using JSN Epic template, k2, and Jfusion.
