Upgrade 1.5.18 to 1.5.20

Post by ldeeder » Sun Aug 22, 2010 8:22 pm

I have read a lot of different articles on upgrading 1.5.18 to 1.5.20 and that all say to copy and over wright the files and directories on the destination (live web site). This just does not seem right as there are directories like the templates directory that contain data that will be over written. Does anyone know of the upgrade procedures in a IIS environment? TIA, Larry

Larry,

Unless you are using a modified version of one of the templates that comes with an original installation of Joomla!, you don't need to be concerned about any custom template being overwritten. Only native Joomla! files will be updated, not Joomla! third party extensions or templates.

Take a look at this Joomla! documentation for more on properly upgrading Joomla!:

"Upgrading 1.5 from an existing 1.5x version"

Thanks for the fast reply Jim.

I have a template I purchased and uploaded via the CMS. But this is not my only concern. In the upgrade package there is a "plugin" directory (and others). If I copy that plugin directory to the production site and over write, all the contents of the live site plugin directory will be replaced. This on just one example of the process that concerns me. Thanks for the help.

I understand your concerns. First you have to realize that any Joomla! third party extensions will NOT be overwritten because they naturally aren't included in any Joomla! core update files. Having said that, yes... Joomla! has core components, modules and plugins which may or may not be overwritten for any particular version upgrade you apply to your website.

The easiest and best thing for you to do if you are so concerned is to first backup your website. There's no MySQL database injected data associated with a Joomla! upgrade. We are only talking about the Joomla! core files as distributed in the original installation package. So your database should not be an issue or effected by upgrading your Joomla! site.

There are a number of ways to backup your site. But if you're still uncertain that just having a backup will be enough insurance for you, then create a duplicate installation of your site in a new subdirectory. Then apply the Joomla! upgrade files ONLY to the backup "test" site within that subdirectory. That way if anything blows up on you, then you can either debug or nuke the "test" installation while leaving your live site untouched.
