In backend - Admin site, go to Help and System info and Directory Permissions. It should be Writable

And you should try this: http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=428&t=272481

If you have checked your directories permissions and they are all writable then it could be a ownership problem. You can use FileZilla to FTP to your site then check the column far right to see what the ownership of your files and folders is, they should all be the same. If they are not ask your host to correct the ownership on your files.

The latest stable free version of Akeeba Backup can be downloaded from here
http://www.akeebabackup.com/official/ak ... 3-0-1.html

If you only have a problem with trying to install Akeeba but other extensions install fine you probably have a partial install that is blocking you from a complete install or your server is having problems with the zip file. First thing to do is FTP to your site and delete all files and folders in your tmp folder. Try to install again, if it still will not install follow the "Manual installation" instructions on this page
http://www.akeebabackup.com/akeeba-back ... #id4813835

Here is a simple and clear solution for you guys, who have this same problem as I had,

Once, when I got this problem, I tried to search over google first, and read these solutions provided by our fellows but none helped, thats not their problem because you actually can't describe your problem in suitable way,

All those who are getting this problem have installed their corresponding component once and then unistalled it in wrong way, which leaves its files in the file manager,

So the solution to this problem is:

Step1: Do check in your file manager, lets take an example of the guy who were talking about akeeba component.
Step2: Delete "akeba" from /public_html/yoursite/plugins/ Directory,
Step3: Delete "com_akeba" from /public_html/yoursite/components/ Directory,
and then install the akeba plugin again.

Akeba is just an example of the component, I don't know if its exactly some component or not, but the solution is same
if you are getting problem with something like joomfish, do delete these two folders from specified directories and then install the component again using the extension installer.

Good Luck

Hi,

I solved the JInstaller::install: Failed to copy file problem by removing the line referring to the inistallation xml file in the installation xml file. To be more precise, in my mod_p_thought.xml file, instead of

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<install type="module" version="1.5.1">
	<name>mod_p_thought</name>
	<version>1.1</version>
	<description>The module displays the thought of the day.</description>

	<files>
		<filename module="mod_p_thought">mod_p_thought.php</filename>
		<filename module="mod_p_thought">helper.php</filename>
		<filename module="mod_p_thought">mod_p_thought.xml</filename>
		<filename module="mod_p_thought">index.html</filename>
		<filename module="mod_p_thought">delegate/JavaBridgeDelegate.php</filename>
		<filename module="mod_p_thought">delegate/ThoughtJavaBridgeDelegate.php</filename>
		<filename module="mod_p_thought">delegate/index.html</filename>
		<folder>tmpl</folder>
	</files>
I used (3rd line iin the <files> section removed)

Code: Select all

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<install type="module" version="1.5.1">

	<description>The module displays the thought of the day.</description>

Hope this helps !

Hi Guys, just to update you, finally I found a way to solve it
Do you have error messages?, like :

* Path too long
* Error cannot delete file: cannot read from source file or disk
* Cannot delete file: Access is denied
* There has been a sharing violation.
* Cannot delete file or folder The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name.

For that I tried it with: http://longpathtool.com/

There is also another possible reason for this "Fail to copy file" error message.
Check your PHP's "Disabled Functions".

Under Joomla 2.5, you can check this under Site -> System Information. If copy is listed in the disabled php functions then it's your hosting provider, not a permissions issue per say.
Talk to your hosting provider if this is the case and have them remove this PHP limit.

Took me a while to figure this out.. and couldn't find the answer anywhere else!
So I hope it helps someone other than me.
Regards,
David

Hi Folks,

As you are talking about file/directory ownership. What should be the ownership for file and directories. Please find the attachment and let me know is this ok or need any modification?

Thanks

Your ownership is all the same and files and folders should be 644 and 755 which you seem to have. If you are having no issues when installing extensions you should be fine.

If your Host's server has ownership issues and your site's files/folders are owned by the FTP user then you will get that error unless you set Joomla to use the FTP method in the Global Configuration settings. The other option is to get your Host to change your permissions to the apache user(if you are on an Apache server). Here is some more info on it;

Your folder permissions are set to 777, on a local server this is fine if it is not accessible from the net. On your Host server folder permissions should be 755, file permissions should be 644. This shouldn't be the cause of your problem, just a safety issue.

Try enabling error reporting in the Global Configuration settings, set it to Maximum, then test to see if you get a php error that might help explain what the problem is. You could also try running the Forum Post Assistant on your server to see if it finds any issues, post back its results and any error messages you get.

I was having the same problem with a home made component, and it was fine after I removed this from the installation's XML file:

<install>
<sql>
<file driver="mysql" charset="utf8">sql/0.sql</file>
</sql>
</install>
<uninstall>
<sql>
<file driver="mysql" charset="utf8">sql/0.sql</file>
</sql>
</uninstall>
