Update of wiki page.

Post by mandville » Sun Dec 13, 2009 10:30 am

For review and comments

to replace http://docs.joomla.org/How_do_you_move_ ... ic_html%3F
with
http://docs.joomla.org/Moving_outside_public_html
for simpler reading.

Also the title may need redoing on the new document please. :-[

How about we call it "Moving sensitive files outside the web root"?

That gets rid of the question mark and removes the "public_html" which is platform-dependent.

I don't see any problem with adding it. It's on my to-do list.

Thanks on both counts.
Hope you can see the reason for the plugin from the WG emails.

Ok, I've moved the page as requested and redirected both the old pages to the new one.

Chris,

Someone found that The Faq's page still has the old information on it. I have asked Claire if we can fix this faq page or redirect that faq to the new page. Whichever is best.

Faq page:
http://docs.joomla.org/Security_and_Per ... ic_html.3F

Actually there's a third option...

Use a little wiki magic and embed one page inside another. It's called transclusion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transclusion and it's one of the major reasons that we moved the documentation to a wiki.

I know this thread is quite old but it seems you didn't redirect any of the initial URLs.

When I visit them I see the same content and I'm not redirected to the new page, so basically you have 3 wiki pages with the exact same content.

Was it intended?

This is my take on what is happening. I could be wrong and Chris would know for sure so maybe he will comment.

It looks like both
http://docs.joomla.org/How_do_you_move_ ... ic_html%3F
http://docs.joomla.org/Moving_outside_public_html
are redirecting to the new page, but I would have to guess that the Transclusion maintains the old urls. There is essentially one page and the other two pages have the information they originally contained removed (they are blank) and replaced with the main documents information making the 3 pages. Behind the scenes there is only one actual page that if updated or edited will update the other two. The effect you see is 3 different urls

Interesting! Thanks a lot Phil D, I never heard about "Transclusions".

When I read "redirect" I immediately thought about URL redirect which seems to not be the case here.

There is no transclusion involved on these pages. It is a simple case of two pages redirecting to a third which is the only page with real content. The other two URL's will give a 301 Moved permanently if you enter them in your browser.

There are no pages that link to the redirected URL's so the redirections could be deleted now. What do you think?

Click on the "Edit" button in the top near-right corner. If the Wikipedia page is protected from editing, you will see "View source" instead of "Edit" and will be unable to edit.
