Yes. You may run into a few issues though? Are you installing 1.6 from scratch? Did you check with your template provider if their template is compatible with 1.6? How old is the template? Etc ... So check those first. Are you going from an old site (using Joomla 1.5) to a new one (using Joomla 1.6)? Provide further scope of what you want to do please?

No, you cannot. Not without modification anyway. The first thing that will crash is the site name which is called differently in 1.6 templates. Other than that there are many other things that can crash specially for complex templates with parameters in them.

Also any layout overrides are basically guaranteed to be broken.
