The standard SEF plugin, activated by default in 1.6, seems to require that the server be configured to serve the Joomla index file as the default directory index.

I conclude this only because it doesn't work otherwise. I've examined the script for the SEF plugin, but I can't figure out where this dependency is occurring.

It seems very odd to me that it would work that way, because the filename "index.php" is actually hard-coded into many of the basic Joomla scripts (I think it shouldn't be, but that's another matter), including the SEF plugin script, not to mention that it actually appears in the SEF URI.

Why does Joomla, when it's using the SEF plugin, need the server to tell it the name of its own index file?

. . . Or am I mistaken in thinking that this is what's going on? Since I don't quite understand how the SEF system works, that's quite possible.

It's a problem inherent in almost every Open Source project that uses a "front controller" and URL rewriting. Only the basic functions of URL rewriting are being used, and somewhat inefficiently at that.

Thanks, g1smd, it sounds like you really know something about this! Can you elaborate?
