Take a backup of your existing site (files and database)
Then download the zip package appropriate for your upgrade route (1.5.17 to 1.5.23)
Then extract the contents of the package into your Joomla root.
Simples!

Mod. Note: Moved from SEO to upgrade forum.

The 1.5.17 to 1.5.23 is an upgrade, not a migration.

I have a similar question but for v. 1.5.20 to 1.5.23. I followed the directions found in the docs section. Backed up the site w/ Akeeba back up. Found the right patch on the download page. Uploaded zip file to root folder on my host company. Opened the archive, deleted install.php. The site still works, but when I check the version on the backend, it still shows up as 1.5.20.

What am I missing?

Many thanks,
Toni

On your server open this file and check the version number in it;
libraries/joomla/version.php
Code:
   var $DEV_LEVEL    = '23';

If you don't see that then your archive did not extract or it was extracted to the wrong folder. Some Host cPanels will not extract .zip files, try downloading the tar version of the patch set and extract that on your server.

@ dpacadmin
Thanks that worked, sort of. libraries/joomla/version.php now shows var $DEV_LEV = '23'; but now, when I log into the back end, I get an Invalid Token response. The site still works though.

Try deleting your Browser's Temp Internet files and any cookies from your domain. Try a different browser. There were several taken threads in this group awhile back but I don't think they apply as you did not have the problem with 1.5.20. Try these though;

Why you need assitance of Elites /gurus ??? There are a lot of tutorials about it and also its so simple to upgrade to 1.5.23 from 1.5.17

1.5.26 is the current version.

Use the 1.5.0->1.5.26 Upgrade

Login to you joomla administrator panel and download update manager component for joomla , install it like any other component . Then select it by going to components -> update manager. Click download updated file and the latest joomla package will be automatically be downloaded. Choose the patch package version and you are done. You can download the update manager here.
