The Joom!Fish project is the official add-on for managing multilingual
content within the content management system Joomla!. The project, which
was formally known as MambelFish is rewritten and enhanced in order to
be compatible with the new versions of the Joomla! project. The rebranding of
the project goes along with a new logo created by Tommy White (http://www.tommywhite.com)
who was one of the logo designers during the logo competition of the Joomla!
project as well.

Together with the new project developers Geraint Edwards
(http://www.ysguboruchaf.co.uk), who created the first how to for using
MambelFish within Joomla!, and Ivo Apostolov (http://ivo.unwe.net), who is
member of the Bulgarian Translation team, we fixed most of the known issues
the last version had. The new look and feel as well as the optimized handling
hopefully helps to make translation work even more easy.

You can download the Joom!Fish 1.7 Beta at:
http://forge.joomla.org/sf/go/projects. ... m_fish_1_7

What's new?
* With an all in one installer all related components, mambots and modules
are installed. You just need to install the component and you are fine!
* Joom!Fish has now a central control panel which allows to access all
  important features
* The translation overview includes filters, which are defined within the
Content Elements. Those filters allow you to find your entries much faster.
* The frontend is now an independent and complete module. Within the module
parameters you control the look & feel of the language selector.
Features like hiding the active language are implemented. The language
selector is quite close to be conform to the accessibility standards and
comes along with a special css (which can be disabled) which is usable
  within the template.css.
* It is now possible to automatically publish content within the frontend.
If this option is activated a user which has publish rights will
automatically publish the translation while saving the content.
* The assumption of primary keys are removed.
The content element can now configure the primary key of a table properly
and with that enables the translator to work with components like
VirtuMart or Zoom, which are using a different primary key than id.
* Added support for translation sql queries involving more than one
  table at once
* Take account of tablename and field name aliases in translation
* Translate lists all in one go (performance improvement)
* Added a system bot for activation of the multilingual database layer as
well as the language determination. With that the Joom!Fish can be used
without any patching of core files
* Reworked the state check of a translation. This new concept based on
md5 comparison of the original values increases the performance and making
  the state information more reliable.

Till the final release we want to achieve the following, in the Beta missing
features:
* Status check for Joom!Fish bot's and modules
* Integrated data migration from MambelFish to Joom!Fish - converting your
MambelFish translations to the new format
* Translation consistency check to remove unneeded translations from your
  database

We would like to thank all of the Joomla! and Mambo community members which
didn't stopped to give us such an positive feedback and new suggestions for this
project. We are looking forward reading your feedback on this improved version
of the Fish at:

http://forge.joomla.org/sf/tracker/do/l ... sh/tracker

If there are no hard show stopping bugs show up it is the plan to release the
release candidate (RC) of the Fish end of next week and the final version a
week later.

Kind regards

Alex

If you want to experiment with translating VirtueMart the required contentelement files are attached (just unzip them into administrator/components/com_joomfish/contentelement/) and start translating.

Really great work !

This new fish is awesome, easy to install, much improved translation handling, and even the new logo rocks  :)

Installation is a breeze. Like the new installer (all-in-one) !

First impressions lasts, thanks for providing this tool !

Thanks for the new Fish.

The installation works very good.

I made the installation on a fresh joomla 1.07 and I have found 2 features.

First : If I write in a textarea or titletext field a word like  it's  it becomes  it\'s in the frontend.

Second : If I enable in Global Configuration : Debug Site then I could not see the sql querys only  0 queries executed will be shown

I can't recreate your problem with the apostrophe.

What:
  • llanguages are you using
  • version of PHP
  • what content type are you translating
  • are you translating in the front or backend
  • is the problem template/encoding specific?

Joomfish was designed for 1.0.8 onwards (not sure if that's relevant though)

These are new constants defined in Joomla 1.7 - we need the appropriate translations for the spanish language file in components\com_joomfish\language\spanish.php.

If you let us have the appropriate values in the tracker we can incorporate the new translations in time for the final release.

thanks

First, lots thanks Joom!Fish team...  8)

Next, would be help each other move on from beta to stable.  ;D

Translation

I have downloaded 1.7beta earlier today and will install it soon for testing. Prior to doing that, I decided to work with the translation. I have translated MambelFish into Filipino about two weeks ago, and is currently doing that for Joom!Fish as well. I found a single item with discrepancy between 1.5 and 1.7 and thought either it might have been changed for 1.7 (no note on that), or it was overlooked:

define('_JOOMFISH_ITEM_INFO', 'Publishing');
define('_MAMBELFISH_ITEM_INFO', 'Item information');

Is 'Publishing' the correct string for 1.7 as above?

Thanks again! Note: I'm not sure where to post bugs at the moment, will appreciate if somebody can point the location.  ;)

Regards, Julian

I just found out this new Joomfish and installed it immediately on a test environment.
It installs greatly and everything is publushed, mamabots, etc
The control panel in the backend is greatly improvement. I just have to play somewhat more.

Only a few suggestions.
In the translation list of modules it shows also the admin modules, which is confusing. A small test on field access=23 would filter those.
Also in the menulist an indication to what menu a menuitem belongs would be nice. Now it is sometimes trial and error. I had that MBF too.

As said this product looks good!
Thank you guys, this is a great improvement and adds very good value to J!

1. english and german language
2. php v.4.4.2
3. content translation : Welcome to Joomla!
4. translation in the backend
5. in the table jf_content I can see the value :  it\'s..

I made a fresh joomla 1.0.8 and there ist not the problem with the apostrophe  :)

The Second Problem with the Debug Site = Yes and no sql queries is also with 1.0.8.

After this I look in the error.log and I found some errors

Hi this is related to the uncomplete spanish language file within the Beta.

Are you able to translate it to spanish? If so please copy the missing defines from the english one and translate them. You can send upload the new file within the project tracker at
http://forge.joomla.org/sf/tracker/do/l ... acker.bugs

Many thank's in advanced

What do you understand under "support of SEF links"?

The fish does not translate the strings within your SEF, but he is able to add the language parameter to the URL. If SEF is activated it should be added automatically to each URL.

Hi to everybody,

thx for the big welcome of the new Fish.

Just a note - you can help us a lot if you report your findings within our tracker at:
http://forge.joomla.org/sf/tracker/do/l ... acker.bugs

Please tell me if it's not working for you - then I might need to figure out what's wrong with the permissions. Normally every registered forge user should be allowed to add an artifact.

I copyed most of the reports here on the forum into this tracker already, so no need to do this again.

Many thx and enjoy your weekend

Alex

Hi akede,

os: w3k + sp4
webserve : apache 1.3.34
mysql: 4.0.22
php: 4.4.2

php settings:
Safe Mode:  OFF
Open basedir:  none
Display Errors:  OFF
Short Open Tags:  ON
File Uploads:  ON
Magic Quotes:  ON
Register Globals:  OFF
Output Buffering:  OFF
Session save path:  c:\www\temp
Session auto start:  0
XML enabled:  Yes
Zlib enabled:  Yes
Disabled Functions:  none
WYSIWYG Editor:  TinyMCE WYSIWYG Editor

It is a fresh joomla 1.0.7 installation with standard template.

I also turn off the WYSIWYG Editor the same result with the apostrophe.

If I made in the backend a new content news then the apostrophe is save correct.
After this in the translation the original title is shown correct, made the tranlation with the
apostrophe then field becomes it\'s, open the translation again and save then the field becomes it\\\'s
You see there are 2 more \\ , open and save again then you have  it\\\\\\\'s

On joomla 1.0.8 there is no problem with the apostrophe. The same system and configuration.

John

My default language for frontend (web pages) is french but my Joomla backend is in english (and I want it to be like that !). However, my Joomfish backend is in french (actually many words are missing like for spanish).
So my question is : Why is my Joomfish in french and not in english ? How can I have it in english ?
(But I want my default frontend language to remain french)

@rued - You rock man

@mvalent - Because the component is searhing for the DEFAULT language set in your Global Configuration. A lot of componenets already do so and if you don't want to use it in French, rename the file "components/com_joomfish/language/french.php" to something else or just delete it.

I have tried to read through the documentation, but I couldn't find out... Does joom!fish support SEF links?
Thanks

What do you understand under "support of SEF links"?

The fish does not translate the strings within your SEF, but he is able to add the language parameter to the URL. If SEF is activated it should be added automatically to each URL.

In the past with Mamblefish, SEF links created under Open SEF or Advanced SEF (or even Joomla) would not work with mamblefish. I tried to search for a solution to this, but I was told that it was a known problem... that mambofish just doesn't work using SEF link components.

:(

Valid point - will make this as an option within the configuration.

Ok, then to make sure we are talking about the same thing.

You are not thinking about having a URL like

http://www.yoursite.com/de/what_ever_bu ... in_english

you like to have

http://www.yoursite.com/de/was_auch_imm ... in_deutsch

or similar.

right?

If yes - then work is in progress, but that's more a problem of the SEF as they would need to be able mapping the translated text to the originals.
