for those who have same problem
1- xampp\php\php.ini

2- change
display error = on
to
display error = off

3- restart xamp if doesn't work restart your operating system

Most of the joomla component are requesting php 5.2. xampp 1.7.2 has php 5.2. So please try with 1.7.2. It should work.

(Sorry this comment didn't get attached)
I have the same problem mohamed1010, but where are you turning the display error to off? If in XAMPP then where?
Many thanks in advance from another frustrated user. (Though it's great when it's up and running)

He said where you can turn it off. You must edit php.ini and find the line display error = on . Replace 'on' with 'off', save and then restart xampp.

igcompany, please tell me which php.ini file, and where it is, so that I can edit it. Just saying "edit the php.ini file" is not really helpful to a beginner such as myself ;)
I tried opening XAMPP\PHP\php.ini but as there is no programme associated with it, I have no idea what I should use. I read on another thread that one should not use word, notepad or wordpad as they leave extraeneous code behind! What programme do you use please?
Thanks for your time

Had same problem like mohammed. IGCompany gave the best advice which worked for me: install xampp 1.72 !
Under 1.74 all kinds of errors were displayed and changing the php.ini was not detected by the joomla installer, it persistently showed "display errors: on".
best to go back to xampp 1.72

Hey guys... I'm using Xampp 2.5 with Joomla 1.7 and 1.5.... Both versions produced the same problem. I saw this thread and followed all instructions. But i edited it in wordpad as textpad is a trial version. Now the problem persists. Do i HAVE to use textpad? and in php.ini, there was no direct line"display error=on". there was something like-
; display_errors
; Default Value: On
; Development Value: On
; Production Value: Off

I changed the first two values to off... Please tell me what to do.... :s

Hi Shri,

i tried several advices here and on other threads and did also what you did, no success. the only way it did work was to go back to the earlier xampp version 1.72.

If it won't work you may have to install xampp 1.7.1. My bad. I forgot that xampp 1.7.2 has php 5.3 and the most extensions don't support 5.3.
xampp 1.7.1 runs php 5.2.9.

Edit C:/wamp/bin/php/php5.3.5/php.ini
find:
display error = on
change:
display error = off

Thanks, this should be handy in the future. Actually, I have my notepad open, I'm collecting troubleshooting errors. I'm a first time user of Joomla, btw.

Thank you so much every one. You seriously helped me this is a good solution. I Firstly opened the php.ini file in my server folder (XAMPP), and replaced display_errors = false, then I changed error_reporting = E_ALL | E_STRICT to error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE and then I stopped and re-started Apache that was running on XAMPP Control Application. This removed the strict standards accessing static property jcache joomla statements.
