upgrading from joomla 1.6.3 to Joomla 1.7.0
I am trying to do what appears to be a simple task that I have done many times before: upgrade a version. But, for some reason this time it doesn´t seem to be working. I referenced the tutorial http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_1.6_fr ... 6x_version . The plan that I had was to up´grade 1.6.3 to 1.6.4 and then 1.6.4 to 1.6.5 and then 1.6.5 to 1.7.0 since I can´t find a patch from 1.6.3 to 1.6.5 as the link takes me to a page that doesnt support 1.6.3 When I try method one of the tutorial, it tells me that there are no updates available. When I try method 2 I get an error that it can´t find the xml for the install package. It seems like I just build this site, but the upgrade patch for 1.6.3-1.6.5 is not available here: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/frs/ and so I instead tried downloading and installing various download packages for 1.6.3 - 1.6.4 here: http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla ... ge_id=5881
and of course the documentation on this page is rather brief: http://docs.joomla.org/index.php?title= ... edirect=no so I wonder if anyone could tell me how to upgrade from 1.6.3 to 1.7.0 . Thanks!

Hi Najatuk,
Use the 1.6.0 to 1.6.5:
http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsre ... ackage.zip
Just upload to your Joomla installation root and unpack. That will work for any version from 1.6.0 to 1.6.4
Then you can use this method:
http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrade_1.6.5_to_1.7
Kind regards,
Nick

Re: upgrading from joomla 1.6.3 to Joomla 1.7.0
Thanks for the idea. I tried downloading and uploading the file three times. That is to say I didn´t do a checksum, but I downloaded the file three seperate times and uploaded each version of the same number of KB one after the other and each time I still get the message:
JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find XML setup file
JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find XML setup file

Hi Najatuk,
I think you're trying to upload it to the Joomla installer in the admin area. Please read my instructions above. You need to upload the zipped file to your Joomla installation root (i.e. the place where you installed Joomla and that contains all the Joomla files). So basically you're going to be doing things manually, but don't worry it's easy.
Kind regards,
Nick

Re: upgrading from joomla 1.6.3 to Joomla 1.7.0
Ah you are right! People say that I am good at multitasking as long as I take things one at a time! I uploaded it and extracted in in CPanel. It seems to have worked in that my Admin Panel now reflects the version as 1.6.5 but when I go to the second issue I get the message:
Update: :Collection: Could not open http://update.joomla.org/core/list.xml
Update: :Collection: Could not open http://update.joomla.org/jed/list.xml
I purge the cache and it liberates the two urls but when I come back to find the update I get the same error. Fortunately method two worked and I was able to update to 1.7.0 with Extentions Manager > Installation Manager (Install) Problem solver, thanks slave!

Re: upgrading from joomla 1.6.3 to Joomla 1.7.0
Just out of curiosity, I went back and tried doing another update using the update feature that should now theoretically work in Joomla 1.7.0 even though I am current. The error message I get is
The PHP allow_url_fopen setting is disabled. This setting must be enabled for the updater to work.
When I google the error message, I get some interesting results. Some sites suggest that there are security issues involved in enabling this feature, and in any case if I should fix it I am not sure whether this is a hosting issue, if there are workarounds in the config.php file, etc...

Yes, this has already been reported to the Joomla Bug Squad and they're investing whether to use cURL instead of fopen. We'll see what happens.

Re: upgrading from joomla 1.6.3 to Joomla 1.7.0
Hi everyone,
I'm having similar problems and have a few questions. I needed to upgrade 1.6.2 to 1.7. The Extension Manger>Install>Upload Package File or Install from URL gave errors which I believe are from php upload limits. I therefore used cpanel to upload the upgrade package Joomla_1.6.0_to_1.6.6-Stable-Patch_Package.tar.gz and tried the Install from Directory option. This gave me the
The The Extension Manager>Update tells me there are no updates available, yes I did purge and find updates.
I have uploaded the Joomla_1.6.5_to_1.7.0_Package.zip package to the root and tried the Install from Directory option but again:
What is/are the missing xml files the installer is looking for or why doesn't it think the uploaded package is a valid package. Is the XML file a living file from previous upgrades that I may have trashed by not following the Extensions>Update process.
Have I broken my Extensions>Update process. (It doesn't seem to see 1.7)
Sorry for all the questions but looking forward to the community help.
P.S. I've just tried to install another extension, not a Joomla upgrade, and I get the same XML error.

Nick, you suggest that I simply need to extract this package but I'm concerned there's more to it. The manual installation instructions refer to having to delete a number of files, modify some sql files and run an sql query. I tried it once and trashed my site, (thank goodness for backups!). Is there more to upgrading to 1.7?, in particular, should the mysql table names get upgraded from j16_ to j17_?JInstaller: :Install: Cannot find Joomla XML setup file

Re: upgrading from joomla 1.6.3 to Joomla 1.7.0
Hi Lantau,
Simply extracting is only for 1.6 versions (which you did correctly to get to 1.6.6). To go to 1.7.0 manually, you'll have to use:
http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrade_1.6.5_to_1.7
which details more than just extracting.
Have your host turn on allow_url_fopen and turn off allow_url_include. With allow_url_fopen, you'll be able to use the quick update:
http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrade_1.6.5_to ... ick_Update
Also, what was the extension you tried installing? Could you check on your folder and file permissions in site >> system info >> permissions? Make sure those are writable.
Kind regards,
Nick

Re: upgrading from joomla 1.6.3 to Joomla 1.7.0
Thanks Nick,
I think there might be more to it. The allow_url_fopen was set to ON and allow_url_include was Off. My site is currently at 1.6.6. The 1.6.5 to 1.7 Quick_Update link instructions still gives me a There are no updates available at the moment. Please check again later. response.
The extension is Community Builder, I'm currently at CB 1.4 and need to upgrade to CB 1.7. Looking around the forum I see a lot of other users are having problems with XML setup file messages. These seem to be related to both Joomla and extension upgrades.
Folder permissions are writable.
Regards,
Lantau

Hi Lantau,
Oh ok, then yes, there's more to it.
Check on file ownership (contact your host if needed) to make sure that your user owns the files, either that or use FTP:
http://docs.joomla.org/Why_can't_you_in ... rom_ianmac
Kind regards,
Nick
