Hello

I'm planing to produce one commercial extension for joomla, but however if I understand GPL good, GPL and GPL 2 means that when someone buys my exstension for money, that same person have rights (GPL) to sell my extension to third parties or give my extension for free to third parties? Is this correct?

That is correct. The GPL provides users four freedoms: to use, learn from, adapt, and distribute software. You might also be interested in reading Joomla's License FAQ: http://opensourcematters.org/index.php? ... icle&id=55

I can not believe in this.
First users buy extension from me and then users have rights to sell that same extension or to give it for free?
I have read lot of legal documents. That is the point.

Is there some good way to protect my joomla extension?

so your "precious" code is private

Error88 - I'm a developer, as well, have been for 30 years. I had the same response when I considered the effects of the GPL. I definitely agree with Alikon that you should not use the GPL if you don't agree with the terms of the license. There are many successful businesses which release code under that license. You might want to research "GPL business models" (Google has many resources) and consider various approaches that can help you earn a living as a free software developer.

You are probably right Stephen. I did little research and find some good facts about GPL licence. I still can earn with affiliate links on my site, giving my code for free and asking for free donation. Also I can do modification of code from other extensions and produce it.

Another approach many developers use is charging for "subscriptions" - which allow the user to enter a download area and ask/have answered support questions. There are a number of developers who use that model -- check out the extensions directory and follow some of the links to commercial extensions.

Wish the best to you!

Amy
