JUG UK - Preston, Blackburn, Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool

Post by adrian_stock23 » Fri Aug 14, 2009 11:13 pm

Subject: Joomla User Group Preston, Blackburn, Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool
Hi,
I am trying to set up a Joomla User Group in my area, to allow Joomla users to get together, swap notes and socialise on a regular basis, e.g. monthly.
For my particular purpose anybody in and around Preston, Blackburn, Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool and the area between those cities would be in reasonable reach.
If there is a cluster of prospects in any particular place, we will try to congregate there.
If we get a reasonable number of people around Preston and Blackburn, for example, we have a venue near Preston where we can meet to swap notes AND get a fantastic Indian buffet dinner for £10 (ten pounds) "eat as much as you like", manna from heaven for starving or frustrated Joomla developers. (Invite a starving banker or a naughty Member of Parliament, if you like :-) )
I am trying to collect the names of interested people through this Forum (the only one I know), but organise get-togethers using the facilities and software of "Meet-up":
http://www.meetup.com/
This will make organisation and notifications cheap and easy. There are meet-up groups for Joomla users in the States, but not in the UK.
If anyone is interested in joining, please e-mail me directly at:
[email protected]
so that I can collect addresses. Please send me your towns and postcodes as well, so that I can locate you and see where clusters form.
Please put "Joomla User Group" into your subject line, so that I can fish you all out of my junk bin.
Pass on this proposal to as many people as possible. Propagate it through Facebook, Twitter and other social networks.
Any other ideas on how to spread the word? (I am only beginning to learn how to use Facebook etc.)
Who could help me organise the group? Volunteers please!
Thanks.
I hope that lots of fellow enthusiasts will now start coming out of the woodwork.
bye,
Adrian Stock

Hi Adrian, have you looked at the list in http://opensourcematters.org/find-a-joo ... group.html or http://opensourcematters.org/find-a-joo ... group.html

The problem we found with meet-up is their interpretation of local is a bit extreme, one of our local meetups involved a trip of 275 miles!

There is already a JUG in the North East and you should contact [email protected] in the first instance.

There is also;
http://www.joomlanorthwest.org.uk/ which we built some time back. Not much has happened on this, but perhaps an injection of input from someone like yourself may get it on track?
Give the contact form a go and it would be great to get meetings underway.

Hi Adam. I am building a website to promote Joomla in Liverpool area. As I am looking at feasability of running short intro Joomla course and looking for work in IT. Although my level here is apprentice it is because I retired and lost my email address and had to set up another username. Been using Joomla for 7-8 years. Have built new recent Joomla site based around CMS/open source and Liverpool views. Site has only been live a few days and not open for registration. Would be interested in JUG involvement. What's happened to J Northwest?

Hi All

This thread is a little old, so I contacted most of the people in it by email and have been delighted with the response.

So, this message is essentially to ‘bump’ the thread…and assess the interest from any others who may be out there...

A number of us are looking to get together to potentially discuss all things Joomla and maybe have a couple of beers in the process. Are you interested? If yes, please re-join the conversation and let’s take it from there…

A bit about me, and Joomla. I live in Liverpool, and have been in IT in various roles for years, but more recently Operational and Project Mgt. I’ve used Joomla on a casual basis for years, but having just come back from my first Joomla Day UK (the other week) I was blown away by the talent and commitment of the community. I guess I am curious about meeting like minded people and seeing how I can contribute to the community…

So, if you’re interested… join the thread… Regards and thanks in advance… K

Hi thekayjaydee,
Be interested in meeting up just about any time and would like to be involved. Response from last posts with only Adrian-Stock seeming keen to get the process moving was disappointing and a group of only 2 was going to be impossible. As there are a lot more Joomla pages in the area (football, Uni, Voluntary groups, sports clubs, to name a few) and with a need to phase in J1.6+ there may be better responses.

Hi All

I've had a number of replies to this post (Leeds, Lancaster, Liverpool, Manchester). That's a fairly big area, but if we are all getting something out of it then it will work.

In the next week, I will look into creating a JUG for the North West (as per mandville's recommendations) and let's see what happens.

Thanks for all your responses...

Does anybody know if the Liverpool group is still going?

I have emailed them in the past and had no reply. I am really disappointed as I've been using Joomla since 2008 and would really have benefited from it. I started the Liverpool Digital Events calendar http://[no tiny url]/livedigital in 2010 and have been posting techy related events for the past 5 years. I organise Social Media cafe Liverpool (very infrequently), Jelly Liverpool and Ignite Liverpool. All techy related events that people have no problem finding out about.

There are tons of other exciting techy activities taking place in the city. Monthly Linux User Group meet ups, infrequent Wordpress User groups (SWIG), IOT meet ups, start ups clubs, Drones Clubs, Geek Ups, Javascript meetups but no where do I see a Joomla meet up.

There is even a perfect place for a Joomla user group to meet at Does Liverpool who have a meeting room especially for meeting such as this. http://doesliverpool.com/ It has toys for people to play with like laser Cutters and 3D printers also.

There was a Joomla Group advertised in the Childwall Advertiser meeting regularly at the local pub the Childwall Abbey but I never attended any meetings and do not know whether it is still in existence.
I have recently passed on my Webmaster duties to a new person who is torn between Wordpress and Joomla. As he is a novice he may, I'm afraid, use WP as Joomla has become the harder CMS to learn and adapt. At the moment the site is still running successfully under Joomla 1, though the hosting company has repeatedly indicated it is unsafe and should be updated.

The JUGs in the UK are all listed here: http://community.joomla.org/user-groups ... ngdom.html.

If there isn't a group there that is in the area you desire, you can start one! These pages might help you: https://docs.joomla.org/Portal:Joomla_User_Groups.

Great. Thanks for the feedback.

Strangely there was a meeting last night!! So I went along and offered to help out. I'm going to get the dates and get the meetings in the Liverpool digital events calendar http://[no tiny url]/livedigital and feed them through to some of the North West UK calendars also.

There's also a geek event called Oggcamp similar to a Barcamp in Liverpool in October so I'll give a talk about Joomla there. Tough crowd, so I'll have to do some research!!! http://oggcamp.org/ But getting some more North west people interested in it as a platform would be good and hopefully enliven the community.

So if anyone reading this wants to know more then let me know and I am happy to point them in the right direction. I am easy to find @neilmorrin
