Hi,

Is it a good idea to upload more than 1 sitemap to Google ?
I created a sitemap with http://www.xml-sitemaps.com and one with the XMAP Joomla extension.
These sitemaps seem to be totally different (e.g. number of URLs). I uploaded both to Google but I'm not sure if this was a good idea ...

Is there a better tool for creating superb sitemaps for Google (site is in dutch) ?

Regards
Peter

I'll suggest you to add single sitemap.

There's really no in multiple site maps, especially conflicting sitemaps that may cause issues with spiders and/or searches

Well, Let me explain my views on sitemap.

Single sitemap and multiple sitemap creation depends on complete size of the site. If you have many sections, categories and pages, I can suggest you to create different types of sitemaps on category basis (manual sitemap creation). For this time you can know that how many pages are indexed in google through webmaster sitemap submit.

It is indeed a good idea, you can create:

A sitemap_index.xml
An article_sitemap.xml (each article sitemap should contain no more than 1000 articles)
And a category_sitemap.xml

If you do regional businesses you can also create a geositemap.xml visit this site to generate your geositemap & .kml file:

Don´t forget to add your geositemap.xml to your sitemap_index.xml

EDIT: Also don´t forget to insert the sitemaps location in the robots.txt file:
Sitemap: http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

I often upload one normal xml sitemaps and one image sitemaps (cause I have many images). Googlebot crawls website quickly so I have no reason to upload one more sitemap.

Having multiple sitemaps has no problem. It is suggested to have at most 50,000 links in each sitemap. So many websites with millions of posts, should have multiple sitemaps. I don't see any problem in having several sitemaps. But as i said, you can have at most 50,000 links in each sitemap. I myself prefer to have about 10,000 links in each sitemap.

In my opinion for articles the best idea is to limit the sitemap to 1000 articles... ;)
