Error! Could not find....

Can anyone help

I have been working with joomla for many years and had no issues with the following until today.

I download new templates, attempt to install them and get the following error:

Error! Could not find a Joomla! XML setup file in the package

If I try to install a template I have previously downloaded, I have no issues.

I have tried downloading templates from different sites
I have tried installing newly downloaded templates to several of my joomla sites
I have no issues with templates downloaded prior to today
I have tried different PCs

Any advice welcome...

When i get this error on a template or extension its usually either the wrong versions or the dl needs to be unzipped first

I have checked versions and they are fine, and the templates are simple 'download zip file, install through Template Manager'.

Templates I have previously downloaded (over the past 4 years) still install without a problem. It's every new template I try installing.

Which is the XML file that the error message refers to?

I have made some progress, I think. The error occurs with templates that are 1.7 and 1.5 compatible. If 1.5 only, they upload fine.
