running up in our test environment.... no fresh issues faced so far, and looks

brilliant...

Just one question,
so far we haven't installed any third party things... its just pure joomla core...

but just hours back
When we tired to install some joomla 1.7 template, everything just worked

perfect
, and is still working fine....
would just like to know, (unlike 1.5 and 1.7)

Is joomla 2.5 backward compatible to joomla 1.7 ????

For updating beta 1 to beta 2?

Only ftp overwrite or there are some sql to run?

or overwrite and the "discovery"?

Frankly I'm disappointed in this second beta, right out of the gate.

I put a bug in the tracker back day one of beta 1 demonstrating how the update system did not work at all for extensions (and as this release has now rolled out, I noticed that the system updater did not upgrade to beta 2, I had to download and extract the zip instead, so it's broken too).

Not only is it not fixed yet.. the bug has gone without comment, question, or acknowledgement. I'd be okay with it if I knew this was even being looked at, but it feels like its being ignored. Not being able to update an extension automatically will make a lot of people assume there are no updates, if this bug persists into release.

Only one month from 2.5 GA to 1.7 support retirement? That is not a long time, and may cause some organizations to switch to a different CMS.

I have worked for companies that were extremely conservative about upgrades and updates. One company refused to upgrade until a release had been out for a year!

Remember, not every company -- especially small ones -- has the staff to devote to sudden mandates and ultimatums like this. You really need to give existing sites a good 6 months to plan and execute any upgrade, and even that may not be enough time.

I have worked Configuration Management and SDLC/release in many professional environments, so I don't feel the need for coaching on how the real world operates. I urge you to consider extending support for at least 1 prior release at least until the next release.

I may reconsider Joomla! if this is going to be the release plan in the future as well. As for me, my own is a rather small organization ...

can you consider that nowadays there are still a lot of site that works with joomla 1.0
so, you are not obliged to upgrade when a series ends his life....
afterall don't forget that the 1.6 and 1.7 series are ShortTS and not LongTS like 1.5 and 2.5

An ftp overwrite may work, just like general update releases work, but still i am not sure.....
personally speaking, we have done a fresh install of beta 2... it doesn't matter to us at all coz its on our test env.

I suggest you to take a backup first, and initially try it with FTP overwrite
(Joomla core minus installation directory)... it might work i suppose....

Automatic update from extensions menu works only for GA releases, not for beta... this is not a bug my friend..

I had to download and extract the zip instead, so it's broken too).
perhaps downloading the package to install the beta release is the only option.... i myself has done 10 installs of beta on different systems... the archives are pretty fine.. nothing is broken... Just check it with your download manager my friend...

please do check the system you are installing upon, and nothing should be in red on the very first page of joomla installation... please do a fresh install....

SOLVED :D

Inside administrator/com_admin/sql there is the latest SQL to run, only one row of code ;)

Hey, something new came n my mind....
Just like, now J2.5 has option to customize offline page's image,

What about 404 and other error messages....
Its commonly faced by many of our clients on cPanel,
that they create custom error pages and save them under domain root like 404.shtml / 403.shtml
this works perfect unless Joomla is installed....
once Joomla is there, the error pages respond to default Joomla error pages....

Quote:
I believe that there should be an option either inside Joomla, to add html source for custom error pages;
Or else Joomla should not override the default server's error_code.shtml file output
, i.e custom error page
:geek: :geek: :geek:

I dont know if this is right place to request features, but thought why not give it a try :-[

Templates can already include a custom error page.

I am having trouble getting the upgrade to install, I get the following

JFolder::create: Could not create directory
Files Install: Failed to find source directory: /var/www/vhosts/domainname.com/httpdocs/cli

We are attempting to upgrade an existing 1.7.0 site, do we need to take them to 1.7.03 before the 2.5??

Peace

you are trying to upgrade a GA release to a beta release .. which is perhaps not possible at all...
you will be able to upgrade J1.7 to J2.5 only once 2.5 comes into a general available release....

you should not use a beta release on you production site... either install beta 2.5 on a test environment.. ot please wait for it to become GA if you wanna upgrade 1.7 to 2.5

I know about what you said,
but still the behavior that joomla overrides the default 404.shtml and other custom files for cpanel is not understood....

There may be few possible workouts....
1) joomla may not override server's error pages
2) there can be option to use joomla error pages or server's pages
3) there may be a direct option to enter html for error pages, just like we enter offline message.
4) joomla may not have any error pages at all....

now i suppose 2nd option is the best according to me.... but still the final derision is only upon the development team...I hope for the best....

The reason your 404.shtml error pages don't work with Joomla, is because of the SEF features in the .htaccess file.

404.shtml configured in cpanel is (likely) stored outside of the webroot, and server configuration loads it when a 404 is occurring. For Joomla, the htaccess file first searches the url location to determine if a file actually exists, and if not it loads index.php with arguments. If those arguments result in a Joomla 404, then the custom error page is loaded.

If you want your customers to have the option of using their cpanel 404.shtml configured page, you could probably use an include within the template error.php file which points to the 404.shtml actual location. That is, if I couldn't explain how it is supposed to work to my customer.

Hello everyone,

i just installed J2.5 beta 2, installation process went fine. Tested few new features like smart search and user notes; also i installed and used few joomla 1.7 components without any problem.

What would be great to have for joomla 2:

- option to add custom fields to users profile.
- multi-mapping feature for content. don't know if it will be availabe for stable version, but it should, it's a long waited and requested feature

Thanks for the quick response, however i would like to explain , both the 404.shtml fine and joomla core are directly under the public directory.... additionally i am not talking about only the 404.. but taking all the 4's n 5's errors in respect.....

is there any way to disable this in joomla, rather than modifying template files???
If nothing is present so far, then i strongly feel that this should be included in 2.5

what's your opinion about having error pages configurable just like we add the offline message from admin panel????

I have a question about the database support. Does "Add ability to support other databases" mean, that it will be possible to install Joomla! 2.5 with/on MS SQL? I ask, because in the installer of BETA2 I'm not able to select MS SQL as a database...

Thanks in advance.

yeah... agree... but i suppose the team is busy in bug fixing at the moment....
I am really very sure that 2.5 is gonna be the best CMS present so far....

I hope such commonly requested feature will now be a part of core,
so that people like me, who pray to opensource may not burn a hole in our pockets   by third party payed products..... the best of the SEF , like FLEXI_access and Community_ACL are payed versons, which cannot be afforded by all... i personally have many clients who are ""students on pocket-money"".... 8) 8)

hey friends, I was just browsing across web when i came across this article (tough its from the era of j.16 , stinks stale  , but still wanna bring some thing out in the limelight )
http://www.a3webtech.com/index.php/comp ... a-cms.html

i can see few of the stuff in that article now being covered, but still that article says a lot...

the major stuff in which drupal is beyond jomla are definitely
multi-team teamwork CMS , ACL , rock-solid under heavy load ,
and i hope joomla 2.5 will definatly take a big leap in this :)

What I find very promising about 2.5 is that it has started moving towards upgrading the article writing process, e.g. by offering intro and full text article images options...

I believe setting blog + frontpage + full article image sizes based on one single photo provided would most useful...

There are already some extensions doing this (mavik thumbails, BK Multithumb, JMultihumb etc) but a basic functionality added to core Joomla, would very much simplify and enhance the article generation process...

It's amazing, how much 2.5 does vs 1.5. I've been working with Joomla since 1.0, so I've seen a lot of this happen.

So, back to the 404 issue Z9iT - you can capture the error number and use include files to choose which error file to include. Where there's a will, there's a way.

For bidsro, 1.6 added the extra fields in profile feature. I've written a component to make this easier, but it's barely alpha level code, and I haven't worked on it since 1.7 was released - I plan on a complete rewrite for 2.5 - but you can find it on my site - it's called Profiler and it will probably install in 2.5, but I wouldn't recommend it for production sites.

Multi-mapping - I've often wondered why it hasn't made it into Joomla yet - but I have an idea for an extension that will enable this feature. If only I had more time...

true my friend, once Joomla 2.5 goes on to my production sites, then i'll think of soing such stuff! :)

see the hyperlink in my last post, which points to a very long article....it says lot for joomla v/s drupal

I still strongly feel that multi-mapping and ACL should be really strong enough and right out of the box, perhaps this is the only field drupal is ahead of us (besides few petty issues..)..

The installation process will only show database drivers that your system is configured to work with. This means you'd need to set up a MS SQL instance and have the PHP drivers installed before installing Joomla!.

It's something I had actually started looking at as 1.7 was released, and I came to the realization that the way things are structured now, there was no way that feature would make it into 2.5 without breaking backwards compatibility. With the 3.0 release in the fall, I'd fully expect this feature to be included as part of the UCM.

1.7 was a total re fabrication from 1.5, which itself broke downward compatibility..... i believe that today itself majority of sites are on 1.5 for its a LTS, and that 1.7 was a short term release, very few ppl are on it... making 2.5 a LTS with compatibility to 1.7, would mean that all the new joomla users along with 1.7 users will be on 2.5.. and 1.5 users will still have to start right from scratches for 2.5

and once 3.0 with this feature in core would be released, then it would mane that it will not be downward compatible to any... so why wont we start this right away with the second long term release after 1.5, i.e 2.5... 1.5 has already lost the compatibility for 1.7 and vis-a-vis...

On Joomlacode downloads of Joomla 1.7.3 are currently counted for 620.386. You call that few?

With all respect but the entire argumentation and reply in your message is whacked: Nowhere is stated or indicated that Joomla 1.5 users have to start from scratch......where you got that 'wisdom' from? Joomla 1.5 users are able to migrate (!)

Also please read the documents about backward compatibility (you call that "downward compatibility) as posted before stating assumptions as facts?

Is there any appropriate list to locate problem reports, or to report ones?
I've problems with getting Language Switcher to work. I created a brand new
empty site, then followed the very detailed instruction at
http://multilingual-joomla-demo.cloudac ... s-by-steps
and then the tutorial
http://community.joomla.org/blogs/commu ... s-new.html,
created categories, articles, menus in three language versions, and associations
between menu items.

Then I tried using it with three languages - en, German (1.7) and Polish (1.6)
Essentially, the multilang functionality is there. I can switch between languages
by manually putting the language URL code (en, de, pl) into the URL. However,
the Language Switcher language listbox shows empty on every page.

Is there something I miss or there is some incompatiblity or a bug?

Lech

----------------------------

a day after...
pls cancel the above. It works in both the 1.73 and 2.5B2. The missing element
in my setup was the lack of designation of home pages in all the languages
installed. Apparently this is the way the information is channeled to the Language Switchers.

Please stop criticizing me, my friend leolam.... its just the language and thought barriers, that i was unable to explain myself well... i never meant implementing this confusing stuff... i apologize for my clogged thoughts and language.....

in a nutshell, i just want to express that, if incorporating Multi-mapping ,ACL and other allied stuff will break the downward compatibility (backward you call)... then why shall we wait for another 620.386 users to adopt 2.5 without this and then have a joomla 3.0 in the end without any compatibility to 2.5...
if the compatibility is eventually gonna break, then why shall we not have this thing right over in 2.5 and plan a smooth future for 3.0...

Anyways, to the truest, i must confess that i have absolutely no idea how the team is going to develop this, 2.5 and 3.0 and that they may also keep the compatibility intact for all... i am merely going by what
mbabker replied....

I might be wrong in my thought which i wont deny, however my love for joomla is true thus was trying to express what i deemed beneficial for it... you must be aware of the fact that since the very instance of Drupal, it has remained very strong in ACL and multi-mapping features, and is till date ????
