Use the Forum Post Assistant.

Yes tmp is writable and it downloads the upgrade and creates an install directory and unzip's everything. But that is it.

This is what it writes to my tmp directory.

Use the Forum Post Assistant so we can see the full Server Setup. It may be file ownership issue.
Strange that is uses user "nobody".

What is the php to Web Server Interface?

Please check your disk capacity. You might have run out of capacity allocated for your account

Hello,
Your session path is not writable. Check your permissions in your global configuration and make sure all are green. You MUST change permissions with your FTP-client and set all folders to '755" and all files to '644'. You are NOT allowed to have any Folders or FILES '777' You can be hacked with these settings

Session Path Writable:

Error still occurs :(

The zip file is fully being uploaded to the tmp file I think it is trying to copy it to another folder. What are the next folders the installation is using?

Are these the same as a full installation?

Your server is using Apachehandler and that gives ownership issues. Every time you will have the same issue when uploading an extension. You will have to use the ftp-layer to upload extensions so you will not have ownership issues. Check the documentation for these settings (or change to a descent host who uses cgi/fcgi witrh suPHP)

means that the ownership is with Apache and that your server uses the Apache2Handler as interface. This means that you will need to enable the ftp-layer and upgrade through ftp

I have a similar problem with a fresh Joomla install that I am trying to upgrade from 2.5.3 to 2.5.4

I changed ownership of all files and folders to apache:apache to account for the apache2handler permission issues and this makes all the folders come up as "Writeable" (green) on the System Information > Directory Permissions page but I still get the "Copy Failed" error. All folders are set to 755 and all files to 644. Any help would be appreciated.

add ftp settings in the administration section configuration -> server. It might help because assuming your ftp user has the correct rights

Thank you that seems to have solved it. I can now update Joomla and install components without issue. Originally changes to configuration.php were saving one level above public_html, setting the FTP root to public_html in Configuration > Server seems to have corrected this.

EDIT: Although all of the folders listed under System Information > Directory Permissions are still reading as Unwriteable (red)...
