Should I compress my site to increase speed
Hi my site http://www.in2town.co.uk seems to me very slow and i would be grateful if people could put on here the load up time they are receiving for my site as i am getting different results.
I have read about compressing the css of my site but i do not know how to do this or if this is a wise idea. I would be grateful to hear off people who have done this and if it has worked and how to do it.
The template i am using is a gavick pro template which is world news 2. If anyone can please help me make my site faster as i have been trying for such a long time now and would be grateful for some advice

Re: Should I compress my site to increase speed
Try PageSpeed, available for Firefox, Chrome.... It will give you a good analysis of the page performance.

And Yslow, too. Hm.. yea Google Speed can give you optimized version of the files for download but ALWAYS make backups just for any case.

What do you need to know about images? You can losslessly compress them with google speed. Just make sure you have backups.

Re: Should I compress my site to increase speed
As far as I know there is one server call per image. Not much to do about that if you want to use a number of images. Just make sure they are not larger than you catually display them.can anyone explain about images
Actually there IS one way to reduce the number of images by combining them into a large image, and showing a part only, for a given image. It is called spriting and is not simple to implement......
Also make sure that gzip compression is enabeled. It means that the content is sent in compressed format and decompressed locally. Virtually all browser support that.
You can look for (google) web optimizing sites, that analyze your pages and suggest solutions.

Re: Should I compress my site to increase speed
I would. I did recently and it looks like it's making a difference. My page speed score on Google went from 70 to 93,94. You can also check GTmetrix. They say it's important and it makes sense, people want stuff fast.
I kept the original files of my javascript, index.css, etc, which are easier to work with and then compressed another version and put it on my site. I would recommend that. Having the original uncompressed will help a lot if you need a backup.

Apache 2.0 and 2.2 allow you to compress content before sending it to the vistor's browser. The types of content to be compressed are specified by MIME type. This feature requires Apache's mod_deflate to function correctly.seaside man wrote: how did you compress your site on the server and how much difference did it make

Re: Should I compress my site to increase speed
In Cpanel. On mine there is a button to "optimize site". Can't remember the exact difference, but it was substantial. I have been working on all kinds of stuff to optimize the site.
I have a few larger images on my site but I try to keep them small. I also figured out how to do a css sprite today too for background images. That helped.

Re: Should I compress my site to increase speed
yeah css sprites...search for "css sprites generators". That will be easier. It worked for me. I went from 20 http requests down to 10. I used this one: http://css-sprit.es/

Use Gtmetrix and keep testing your site. Do what it tells you to do. Also I would remove Mootools and caption.js from the header.
