Hi everyone,

Ok here is the issue I am having, not on every page but on certain pages that are linked through menus. This is the exact URL I am getting:

http://website.com/index.php/services/2 ... -designing

You can see the numbers "2012-01-22-18-38-50"

What do they mean? How can I remove that part from the url? I need the final URL to look like:

http://website.com/index.php/services/graphic-designing

The website is based on Joomla 1.7 platform and no SEF extensions are installed.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Niladri

It appears logical that the number are the date/time of the post. In this case 6:38:50 PM on January 22, 2012.

1) Why would you want to?

2) You can't unless you somehow modify your entire system as to not use the date/time in the storage of the posts. That is all part of the path/filename where the resource is located.

Please PCZeroNet... This is a serious matter and I am seeking for help from people who are familiar with Joomla 1.7.x CMS. And what do you mean by the second point? The point doesn't make sense and there is nothing called "posts" in Joomla so I am getting confused as to what you are referring to. I need to remove that part to make the URL's look more cleaner and friendlier, ofcourse.

Most of the article linked menu items that are working properly. But only this and 2 other menu items are showing the date-time part in URL. For example, here is another menu item linked to an article that doesn't show date-time part:

http://website.com/index.php/services/logo-design [no date-time part in URL]

I think I might have made a slight mistake in setting up the menu items but can't figure out where. Has anyone faced this issue before?

Ok I am giving the real link from root but the website is in offline mode so the page won't open :)

Here is the page linking to a single article that has the date-time part:
http://badadesigns.com/index.php/servic ... -designing

Here is the page linking to a single article but doesn't have the date-time part. This is what I wish to achieve:
http://badadesigns.com/index.php/featur ... ists-style

Thanks

Ok.... I'll try to respond from what I gather... How many sub-meny items under the menu of "Services" and what are their names? So esentially from "Services" to Sub-menu "graphic designing" is there another menu item? If yes, open it up and check it's name and alias

I checked and found the problems only occurring with Single Article menu items.

OK... I've replicated the "problem" on my own site now... and my guess was correct.

Graphic Designing is a sub-menu item in your menus. This Graphic Designing menu is contained within another menu... the alias of that is this time and date. you need to change that. Try it and let me know.

Hi,
As Vidurb says it's the auto generated menu item alias.

When creating a menu item fill in the alias under the menu title with what you want it to display.

Hi, I have changed both the aliases: that of parent menu and the sub menu. But it still doesn't work :(

The final action... open each article, each category (and any nested category) then every menu item (and every nested menu item) delete the alias of each and "save & close". This will take you time, but if this doesn't solve it... only a master+ level can help you out.

It looks like you have not renamed the alias in the menu between 'services' and 'graphic designing'

If the site is multilingual, it has happened to me before with Joomla 1.7 and 2.5.
What I noticed was that for some reason, if the article title is not in English, then when saving, it's auto generated Alias becomes this number. In other words, you got to edit the Alias manually, and set it to be the same as the alias of the English version of the article, and if you don't use an English version, then just make the Aliases in English for the urls.

Maybe not a great solution, I haven't tried for example Greek Aliases, but in my case that was how I wanted them (in English).

probally best to just delete this thread as it is useless, lots of people not answering the question...

If anyone has a clue how to take out the numbers let us know.

neo4evr , I feel your pain especially when you get more questions that are not helping you.

First, regarding your "2012-01-22-18-38-50" in the URL

Solution 1: If you used the 'Menu Item Alias' option when you created your menu, then all you have to do is select your menu item (your article) from the option under 'Required Settings' and don't worry if you still see the date under the alias. You can also type in the alias for that menu.

Solution 2: If you are still having the same problem, just delete the menu, empty the trash and create a new one making sure that you select the 'Single Article' option.

Now, to the reason as to why you got the date in your URL:
1) Did you create a category and used a non-english (perhaps by accident) character when you named your category?, or
2) It is possible that you created the link using the 'Menu Item Alias' instead of the 'Single Article' option. Again, I am just guessing here because I cannot see the backend.

Note about the URL you want instead.

I would actually remove the domain.com/index.php/ from the URL and to do so, you have to go to your Global Configuration and under the 'SEO Settings' located on your right, change the following 2 options to 'YES':
Search Engine Friendly URLs
Use URL rewriting

and keep the rest to 'No"

You will be using Joomla Built in SEO and not the other junk. Also, make sure that you rename your htaccess.txt to .htaccess

Just an FYI
For SEO, I would change the link to the article (and the article title) to other then graphic designing because it is very competitive. 'Graphic Design' has a medium competition which makes it easier to compete. Some might tell you that a keyword in the URL (after the domain.com/) might not be important but I am thinking about semantics here. I have created 2 different pages but on the same subject (with slight changes to the content so eliminate 'duplicate content' issue and the url with the keyword, like you have designing-graphic, was highly ranked but instead of using designing-graphic for example, I used graphic-design instead because the competition was medium.

I hope the above helps but let me know if it does not.
