hi i have been doing a lot of work on my site with seo and optmization as google now look at your site speed as a way of ranking according to reports i have read, so i decided to use amazon s3 to reduce my website size and increase speed, but i have found when i am checking the site that the size of my site has not got smaller. i am using tools which is still showing the size of my pictures on my site which i thought would not show them, so i am a bit puzzled what the point of a cdn system is.

i was hoping to reduce the size of my home page from 575 kb to around 200kb but it is not working out.

any advice would be great on why my site size is not being reduced.

CDN = Content Delivery Network

What this means it deliverys content over a network, you can enable gzip to compress your images and code, but only to a certain point you need to use transjpeg and pngcrush manually to get lossless, then you upload the images again to the CDN. Using lossless compression normally compresses the images more than 30-60% everytime without the quality loss, something most paint packages do not do, like Photoshop doesn't unless you tweak it.

The CDN is a added resource, it mirrors your files all over the world so everytime they visit your site the shortest route is always picked. You should be using around 2 containers, if your using more than your slowing you site down since you have more DNS resolves.

Use 2 CDN's on S3, for example CDN1 CDN2.domainname dot com

Then say for example on the page you have 20 images you load them like so

image 1 cdn 1
image 2 cdn 2
image 3 cdn 1
image 4 cdn 2
image 5 cdn 1
image 6 cdn 2
Then on your server the same time, its dealing with the TEXT Fetch, meaning that this speeds up things a hell of a lot, but if your web host is slow, then sadly you need another host or use a cloud server either on rackspace or s3, they cost as little as $0.01 per an hour, but requires work to get them running.

I write a guide for using containers, and using your own domains while its meant for Rackspace CDN its kinda similar on S3

It's really straight forward, you need to edit the CSS files, I recommend downloading firebug, is it your site?

hi yes this one is mine. any recommendations would be great. at the moment i have had a problem with a k2 module, the k2 news module, i like the module but it does not like amazon, it will not display the images that come from amazon which i do not understand why where as other modules do.

i have been working on it for a long time but we had to redesign the site as our hosting company told us to update the joomla because it was making the site slow, they said they could do it for us and went ahead and lost us over 10,000 pages of content.

Hey again, Sorry for the slow response if I'm completely honest the site needs a lot of work, I really do suggest you opt to have a professional look at it, if you don't have the funds this is what I suggest for the time being, please note I only address the issues on the front page and I assume that this continues to be a problem all over your site.

1) Have a Favicon Unique icon which is different than the default Joomla one.
2) You have over 16 CSS files this be compressed and minified into a single file and stuck on your CDN.
3) You have 9 Javascript files, these should be minified and compressed, as well as combined to 2-3 JS scripts in total.
4) Your Meta Description on the front page is 165 Characters Long, Google only displays and cares about a max of 156, so keywords may be ignored.
5) Your page title is only 52 characters long, Google allows 70 therefor you are not fully optimizing your keywords, you should select one primary and 1-2 secondary's and fit them into the page title as well as the meta describe while ensuring they are good sentences so they are readable by SERPS.
6) Your Google Analytics is near the top of the page, this will slow down your site, it should be placed just before </body>
7) Your H1 Titles is static therefor you are repeating the site title on every single page, you are better of not using banners / images as H1 tags, this way you can have article headers as the h1.
8) Your images Widths, and Heights are not set, reason they are looking squeesed and not very nice too look at all.
9) Your images are missing ALT tags this will hurt your SEO.
10) Your images are not lossless compressed
11) Your page titles are far too short on most pages, and the description doesntt include key words and sometimes not in a proper readible sentence.
12) You are keyword Stuffing NEWS Anchor, Google will penalise you for this.
13) Some images on some articles are duplicated, this is not a good thing unless the article remains the same, for example if you have a article about Arnie, for each page you'd want a different picture of him, making your articles more unique.
14) Pages like Privacy Policy, Usage Policy, Terms and Conditions, Contact Pages, and About page have been known to boost SEO.
15) No contact information, best to include one way of contacting the web master via email.

And theres most likely more but I'm extremely busy at this present time to help any further, I hope this helps you out.

thank you for this help, this is amazing. i did have the site the way i wanted it, but then my hosting company caused a major problem when they upgraded the site, but that is another story, and then when i had the site the way i wanted it, as soon as i started using amazon, the k2 news module would not show the images which has left me with a huge website problem as i need the k2 news module on my front page and site, i have tried to get an answer why the k2 module is not picking up the images from amazon but on k2 forum i have not received any reply and i have tried on this forum but not received a reply yet and really need to find the answer.

I would love to hear your thoughts on what you feel the home page should look like, please do pm me as i would love to get it right.

1. can you let me know how i do this please - You have over 16 CSS files this be compressed and minified into a single file and stuck on your CDN

2. can you also let me know how to do this - You have 9 Javascript files, these should be minified and compressed, as well as combined to 2-3 JS scripts in total.

3. I have been trying for a couple of days to try and find which file the google analystic code is in and i cannot find it and need to sort this problem out. - 6) Your Google Analytics is near the top of the page, this will slow down your site, it should be placed just before </body>

4. Can you let me know how to do this please. Your H1 Titles is static therefor you are repeating the site title on every single page, you are better of not using banners / images as H1 tags, this way you can have article headers as the h1.

5. hi sorry do not understand what this means can you let me know where this is on my site - keyword Stuffing NEWS Anchor

thank you for all this, the rest of the stuff i am going to work on now, many thanks for this and look forward to reading your responce.

K2

K2 is trying to operate on local image files, if you look in the CDN Section or search for CDN in the extensions section of joomla you can do a global replace, so you copy all thes files to your shared web hosting, and you have them duplicated on your cloud.

You then use an extensions to CATCH all local files and stick the CDN url to it :P

Back to work, Sorry I really don't have the time at the moment maybe later, I work from and I'm busy at of the times.
