Multilingual tutorial for Joomla 2.5?

Post by kers7754 » Thu Mar 08, 2012 11:24 pm

I have read that Joomla 2+ has multilingual abilities where a content writer can write an article into several languages and Joomla can display them based on browser default languages or some kind of flag UI.

I am looking for a Joomla 2+ tutorial that explains everything I need to do to get this to work? Is it the same as in 1.7 or is this different for 2.5?

Does anyone have a tutorial or where I can find docs for this?

Thanks,
--Jeff

Maybe you could use my sheets for a Joomladay presentation I did.

I think this is exactly what I need... It seems though that the CSS is not working or something else cause the site is unreadable in any browser.

Do I need a plugin to view this?

The main tutorial is still the same for 2.5

I think I followed exactly the instructions in the tutorial for this rather simple website: http://emag.lessecretsdemarie.com/
However, I see only the main menu, and never the language menus for French and English. For example, the French menu does not contain the Welcome entry, and the entry "Les magazines" link to a page with only French-speaking magazines.

Certainly I made at least one mistake, but what is it?

hard to see just looking at your site.

You should not have Accueil and Welcome in the same menu
You should not have Les Magazines in the same menu either I guess.

Are you sure you followed the tutorial as should?

If you like I can have a look at your site. Just send me by mail a superuser name/pass access to your admin

Clicking the French or English flags leads to the .../fr/ or .../en/ folder, respectively. But both folders in fact display the main menu, not their proper menu.

1. Uninstall all falang stuff as you are not using this.

2. Your main menu with a home menu item set to ALL languages has 2 modules and they are both published, contrary to all tutorial explanations. ) Not speaking of the name of the main one (This site) which you kept from a former installation with sample data.

I suggest your restructure your site by following exactly the tutorial.

OK, that's done.

I don't understand this part. On Extensions -> Modules I see that only two menu modules are published, those for the English menu and the French menu. Am I searching in the wrong place? Or should I delete the other modules?
I suggest your restructure your site by following exactly the tutorial.
I know that there are too many things on this site because of the sample data. But except building the site again from scratch, I don't understand what I should do.

Many thanks for your help and your patience.

Hello, thanks a lot for your work! Your tutorial helps me to finaly get a multilingual joomla site to work!

I have just one hypothetical question for all:

I did all as you have written on your tutorial, and lets say I have three languages: english, german and spanish. I keep default main menu untouched so there is just one item = homepage, which is set for all languages and it is hidden as well. Each language has it's own default page (as was said in tutorial) and then other sites (all in specific category). Everything is working.
But I could not test what will happen, if someone e.g. from Italy visit my site. Which language and what site will appear to him/her?

Thank you a lot for your answer. If there is a way how to simulate and test this situation, it would be very helpful for me (as I will need to try, if everything is working fine..).

P.

All depends on the settings of the languagefilter plugin for New visitors and the preferred language set for the user's browser.
It should default to site default language if the browser settings are set to Italian, as you do not propose Italian as a Content Language.

Hi guys, I am at the verge of rebuilding my site in joomla 2.5 using falang, to native multilingual support, but have one question I think you can help me with.

If I use multilingual native support on Joomla

1. Can I set all page/categories/descriptions names and tags in all the different languages I have in my site
2. Can I have SEF urls in all languages on my site?

Thanks a lot for the help!

I have a question,

to create a bi or multilingual website, is it better to create it without sample data or it just doesn´t matter?

Never use sample data. Start with no sample data.

There's a download link on the top left of the screen (the orange download button).
But it only seems to work if you are logged in.
So you have to create a Scribd account or use a Facebook account to login & download.

Thanks for quick replay,
I've tried that, but it didn't work !!
I'll check again.

Edit:
I've downloaded it now.
Thank you.

Question please,
Does it work well for 2.5.9, and no change there?

Yes, it works well for Joomla 2.5.9

One change: "1. Install Language pack" -> you can install (most) languages directly in the back-end without having to download them first.
Extensions > Language Manager > [Install Language]] > select a language > [Install]

Hi every one,
I'm building multilingual site using this tutorial that pe7er posted, btw great tutorial.
Everything works fine except my menus. When I switch language the menu keeps the same. Even tough I have defined menus for every language, I still see only main menu, and it doesn't change when I change language.

Please advice.

Welcome to Joomla forum!

Could you make sure that the different menus for the different languages are published, and assigned to All Pages?

Thank you.

Menu for each language is published, and they are assigned to certain pages that are related to that language.

I would assign those Menu Modules to All Pages,
the Module Position the same as the Main Menu Module,
and only select the [Language] box for the specific language.
