HI. I have a VPS with a reputable hosting company. I set up all my own accounts in WHM (Web host manager). I created a new account the other day, installed joomla 1.6. Everything went well.

Later I noticed that WHM was sending me emails about excessive resource usage under that account. I have the WHM firewall turned on to send me an alert when a process runs longer than 1800 seconds. Every hour on the hour I get an alert email that the account that joomla 1.6 is installed on is running sftp in a fashion that goes beyond 1800 seconds.

KEY: I haven't touched this account or site since I installed it last week, so I know its not me doing it when using FTP or somethign.

Here is the message below. Any thoughts. I emailed tech support. I can adjust the firewall to send out alerts when a resource runs longer than 1800 seconds... but 66,000 seconds is just way to high to set the default to. According to WHM opinion, 1800 should be a default setting, so I figure that is normally longer than what must stuff takes to run.

Here is the message below.

-------------------------
Subject: lfd on vps.myservername.com: Excessive resource usage on account: myaccountname (15811)
--------------------------
Time: Sat Jan 15 06:01:08 2011 -0500
Account: myaccountnamehere
Resource: Process Time
Exceeded: 66521 > 1800 (seconds)
- Hide quoted text -
Executable: /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server
Command Line: /usr/libexec/openssh/sftp-server
PID: 15811
Killed: No
--------------------------

THoughts? Is joomla 1.6 contacting joomla.org to look for updates, rss on security? Something?

I am getting a similar issue but on the index.php of a 2.5.1 install.

Time: Fri Feb 17 09:33:30 2012 -0700
Resource: Process Time
Exceeded: 16249 > 1800 (seconds)
Executable: /usr/bin/php
Command Line: public_html/index.php
PID: 9736
Killed: No

I have actually had this install in place for quite a while, and didn't start seeing this till recently. I get this message every hour. Any insights would be appreciated.

I'm also getting the flag "Excessive resource usage" on my vps, from one installation of version 1.7.5. I have one other install of 1.7.5 that's not got the problem and 10 domains running 1.5.25 that have never had this issue.

@jgentile,
Your issue doesnt really seem to be joomla specific. It could actually just be a VPS issue.. or something else.
Try uninstalling Joomla completely, if you can, and check if you get the messages.

Mudparr what you have listed here may be a different issue, but not unique. I have in fact uninstalled completely and reinstalled and am still having the same issue. I have been having the same problem for quite some time now. There are actually quite a few people having this problem with joomla installs right now. A quick google search will show that quite a number of people are having this issue.

Here is additional info I can shed on the matter. Our server is running two installs of joomla right now. The first is a 1.5.25 install. No problems there. The second started as a 1.6 (stable release) and has been upgraded as patches have come out to 2.5.2. The problem has only shown up in the last 2 months or so. I did the reinstall when it was 2.5.1 (wiped everything and installed 2.5.1) and still the problem presents.

One mine if I don't kill the process, additional index.php processes (different process IDs) start showing up, until I am flooded every hour with emails about 50 joomla processes sitting in memory. This is really frustrating. Anyone that can give some REAL insight into the matter, thanks in advance.

Not sure which upgrade solved it, but my problem went away. This was after updating Rockettheme template, Akeeba products, other extensions and Joomla.
