Request - Remove unsupported version badges
I think it would be useful to remove unsupported version badges. 1.6 is already and soon 1.7 will be unsupported.
If you'd like to keep the badges, then I would request that they are somehow condensed, and maybe only the supported versions are displayed in category listings. For example, once I've updated an extension to work with 2.5 I won't be making fixes that only work on 1.7, and I believe that is the proper way to develop with the new cycle, to support what Joomla supports.

Re: Request - Remove unsupported version badges
Hey Jeremy - both the 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7 badges are being removed (a blog post coming soon to describe the timeframe since they each have different shelf-lifes).

Time to Remove the Joomla 1.6 Badges
It's not a supported Joomla version any more, so it's surely time to get rid of Joomla 1.6 badges?

Re: Time to Remove the Joomla 1.6 Badges
I personally don't plan on using either joomla 1.6 or 1.7 ever since the publication of joomla 2.5. But at the same time there are many extensions out there that are joomla 2.5 compatible (most 1.7 extensions seem to work with 2.5) but have not updated their badges for the new joomla.
The 1.7 badge should stay for a little while longer considering that it's still "supported" for a little over a week more.

Re: Request - Remove unsupported version badges
Come on guys ... Joomla 1.6 and 1.7 are both now unsupported, officially dead versions of Joomla. They have major security holes.
Time to go Joomla 2.5 only on the JED.

+1 - Time to remove the 1.6 / 1.7 badges. Especially in lieu of the major security hole announced / patched today, and the only 'fix' being to upgrade to 2.5.3.

+1 on this. It's important to get users on 1.6 and 1.7 to upgrade to 2.5. The fact that the security fixes in 2.5.3 are not offered for 1.7 and earlier is as good an argument as anyone in my book

+1 on removing 1.6/1.7 badges. However, I'm hearing rumors that 1.5 extensions are being dropped completely from the JED come April. True?

Re: Request - Remove unsupported version badges
in my opinion remove 1.5 extensions from JED after april despite the 1.5 is at end of life
could not be a good solution, cause a lot of people is still on joomla 1.5 side as i know
maybe we can start a survey to better know how many users are on 1.5 and how many have migrated to 2.5
my 0.2 €

Re: Request - Remove unsupported version badges
You don't need a survey. The downloads of the 2.5.3 patches will give you a rough idea of how many 2.5 sites there are (hovering about the 100K mark). Conservatively that leaves 9.9 million still on 1.5 Whatever the case, if would be appropriate to give the extension developers a say first - it's their work after all.alikon wrote:in my opinion remove 1.5 extensions from JED after april despite the 1.5 is at end of life

Re: Request - Remove unsupported version badges
one download of 2.5.3 patch don't mean one 2.5.3 live production site i'm afraid,
i agree with
give the site owners a say too
p.s.
as a little developer of free extensions i've stopped 1.5 extensions development since 1.6 come out
i agree with

No, it's just a "rough" measure.alikon wrote:one download of 2.5.3 patch don't mean one 2.5.3 live production site i'm afraid,
I've stopped too, but I've still got three 1.5-ers I know are still actively used.alikon wrote:as a little developer of free extensions i've stopped 1.5 extensions development since 1.6 come out

Re: Request - Remove unsupported version badges
When the core upgrader is used, does a 2.5.3 patch download count go up? Or is that not kept track of?masterchief wrote:The downloads of the 2.5.3 patches will give you a rough idea of how many 2.5 sites there are (hovering about the 100K mark).
Also, just by the fact that "Joomla_2.5.3-Stable-Full_Package.zip" has been download 80K times since last Thursday, I'd guess that there are a lot more than 100K 1.6-2.5 sites out there.
Who knows
Kind regards,
Nick

Re: Request - Remove unsupported version badges
I personally have no public 2.5.x sites out there - but I have 3 development installations that are on my laptop. So, as I'm likely not the only person with development servers - going by downloads won't give an accurate number.
I'm still getting requests to port my newer extensions to 1.5 (which I refuse without sufficient monetary incentive). I fear there will be a lot of people holding onto 1.5 unless there is a compelling reason to upgrade. Taking away the ability for users to install new extensions would be an incentive - as well, depriving them of security updates would be incentive (but might negatively impact the loyalty and evangalism Joomla currently enjoys)
Personally, I would love to end support and withdraw availability of my 1.5 extensions but I fear that doing that before the end-of-life would reflect badly on me. The end is near (for J1.5) and I can hardly wait.

Re: Request - Remove unsupported version badges
It's hard to tell either way. This is what Joomla uses to update though:
http://update.joomla.org/core/extension.xml
So that makes about 120K likely updates + 80K uncertain new sites (as of now). Safe to say we have between 100K and 200K 2.5 sites out there. It's still not that many.

Re: Request - Remove unsupported version badges
By leaving J1.5 extensions on the JED you're giving people the idea that it's ok to use J1.5 to build sites. As we all know, J1.5 is EOL in April, so people will be installing J1.5 at a time when it's no longer supported.
JED should be leading the way in guiding the users as to what's the appropriate version to install. I still have customers proudly telling me that they're building J1.7 sites despite me telling them why that's a really bad idea, so institutions like the JED should be helping people to not make those bad decisions. Stop listing extensions that are J1.5, 1.6 or 1.7 only.

In this thread, on Thu Jan 26, 2012 7:38 pm, Matt Lipscomb said there would be a blog post regarding this. Shortly after, I asked where and when that blog post could be found - but there was no reply or clarification. Does anyone know anything about this?
