Hi everyone,

I need some of your expert advice, if not, whole of it :-).

I have a site running which is built on non-joomla, now that i want to design the whole website using joomla and change the host provider,keeping the same domain name.

However, I am concerned on how to make the old urls work even after shifting to new website.(meaning, since google has indexed those old urls pertaining to each articles).

Does it have to do something with DNS configuration, CNAME?

Kindly advice.

thank you

You can use a htaccess file to do a redirect of any urls from the old site. Use a 301 redirect to let Google know that this is a permanent move;
http://www.askapache.com/htaccess/301-redirect-with-mod_rewrite-or-redirectmatch.html
This might help;
http://www.htaccessredirect.net/

Some extensions allow you to do redirects also, like sh404SEF, I think Joomla 2.5 has native redirects ability now too.

thank you for the reply.

Okay I still have some doubt on complete shift.

a.Should the old server be kept running to make the old urls work?
b.Should i copy all the articles to the new server to make it work?

your help is highly appreciated

Leave the old server set-up and running
Build your site on the new server and add your url solution to the new server(htaccess redirect or SEF extension with url redirect ability)
Test the new site as best you can with their temporary url access
Change the DNS settings for your domain to point to the new server
After 48Hrs you can backup (site files and database)then shut down the old server site
Check and make sure your old urls are being "301 redirected" to the correct pages on the new server

There are several good newspaper templates available, you might also want to look at an extension like K2 for more versatility.
I haven't had an issue with archiving a large number of articles yet, perhaps someone else will post a reply with experience in this.
