I'm trying to upgrade Joomla Version 1.5.20 to Joomla Version 2.5.4.

I've upgraded other CMS's in the past, but Joomla seems to be a little different. Does anyone have any advice as to the best way to upgrade?

So far I've:

- Downloaded the entire site
- Exported the database via phpMyAdmin

I've installed MAMP and Joomla locally and I'm trying to replicate their site on my machine in attempt to upgrade locally before doing it live. I've loaded the template, but haven't been able to load the content yet.

There seems to be a lot of versions between 1.5.20 and 2.5.4, and it's making me a bit nervous.

I suggest at least a two phased approach for this.

First, bring/upgrade your current site that is using Joomla! 1.5.20 to Joomla! 1.5.26. You could download the path file Joomla_1.5.0_to_1.5.26-Stable-Patch_Package.zip from http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/joomla/frs/?action=FrsReleaseBrowse&frs_package_id=6311 and upgrade your site.

Review of the document http://docs.joomla.org/Upgrading_1.5_from_an_existing_1.5x_version would be of help.

Once, tested thoroughly, review the documents http://docs.joomla.org/Tutorial:Migrating_from_Joomla_1.5_to_Joomla_1.6 and the discussion topic http://forum.joomla.org/viewtopic.php?f=625&t=691030 would be of help.

If you are using any third party extensions then you have to check for their compatibility with 2.5 before even attempting the migration.

Note: Always attempt upgrade and migration in a test environment before doing them in a production environment.

Thank you so much for responding!

I'm having trouble finding an install version of Version 1.5.20.

I've only been able to install Version 1.5.26 locally, I can't seem to find a link to download v1.5.20.

Do you know where I can find an install of v1.5.20?

The document http://docs.joomla.org/What_version_of_Joomla!_should_you_use%3F would be of help.

You have to go to Joomla! Extensions Directory (JED - http://extensions.joomla.org/), look for the extensions you are using, one by one, and check the compatibility flags.

As the name says, it is the listing of most of the extensions published for Joomla!
