Installation of mobile templates

Post by Nemesiss » Mon Apr 16, 2012 9:41 pm

Hi,

I'm playing around with an extension to change a joomla site to a mobile site. Although I have that extension installed I thought I would just see about installing a joomla template (free from TM) just to see how it works. All the mobile templates I've seen are not like regular joomla templates and they don't install through the extension manager like I expected.

How does one go about installing mobile template in Joomla? (1.5v or 2.5v of jooml)

thanks.

You could try searching for "Responsive (Design) templates":
templates that automatically adapt their size (& what they display) based on the screen resolution of the visitor.

See examples:

Thanks for the response. Yes, that is an option I've been looking at for new sites, but for existing ones that's not an option. One solution I have found and works very good is an extension that I installed. The support is amazing and the extension is easy to setup.

The extension can be found here:

Hi, I'm from the Mobile Joomla! team

Code: Select all

http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/mobile/mobile-display/11722
I'd like to add that Mobile Joomla instantly provides a mobile version of an existing site out-of-the-box, and has extensive options to further optimize the mobile site when needed. It supports all mobile devices, including feature phones - not just smartphones. Mobile Joomla is installed normally as a Joomla extension.

As responsive design was mentioned, one remark about that as well. Responsive design templates are great, but their major drawback is that all the adaptation is done on the client-side - so the full pages and assets are sent to all mobile devices. Mobile users are typically rather wary of long load times and sluggish pages. Mobile Joomla! can also be used along with a responsive template, to optimize the responsive template server-side for each client device, so that the bandwidth use and load time is minimized. Testing some responsive templates with Mobile Joomla we've seen significant performance boosts.

Cheers,
Miikka
